Edward understood why his father wanted him to temporarily join a party. Other than the training he would undertake before the academy, his father probably wanted him to have a taste of the real world. After all, most people neither could go to Academy nor could hire a private tutor. Most of the population learned their Jobs with little to no help, and performing their Jobs was the primary form of practice.
He didn't question why his father didn't simply put him in a party from their guild either. Party members probably wouldn't act as they would usually do while the son of their guild master was accompanying them. So it was only natural to look for another guild if his father intended to teach him how a party with a regular newbie would act.
What he couldn't understand was why his father chose the guild that shared a not-so-pleasant history with their family.
Taking Edward's silence as confusion, Lorcan explained:
"You might be wondering why I asked you to spend your time with a party when you already had a scheduled tutoring in your routine." That wasn't the question on Edward's mind, but he couldn't ask what he wanted to while Victor was standing right next to them. Unwillingly, he nodded. His father's explanation was in the same line as what he thought. After the explanation was over, he responded:
"I see. Since father thinks that it is necessary, I will accept it." Although he couldn't fully grasp the situation, he still trusted his father, so he accepted.
"Good to hear!" said Victor. "I actually brought some members of the party here, I want you to meet them." Victor turned and started to walk as he beckoned with his hand, telling him to follow.
'It looks like things were already set in stone.' Edward inferred. While following the old man, he got lost in his thoughts, reviewing the things he knew about Calven's and Griffin's recent history.
All grand cities of Medias, except for the capital, were ruled by councils, members of which were guild masters from that city. A guild master's weight in the council was proportional to their guild power.
Thanks to the strength of Scorching Wing, the guild they own, Griffins were at the top of the city ever since the city was founded,
until the time of his grand-grandmother. Their strength was greatly reduced during the uprising that happened in her time.
Some guilds partake in the uprising too. Initially capital didn't intervene since it was more of an internal conflict, rather than a rebellion.
Although this changed after the conflict escalated beyond what they deemed reasonable.
Scorching Wing was already suffering from the losses at that point. On top of that, the capital declared the uprising in the right. Thus, Edward's grandfather took the seat of guild leader as Scorching Wing fell from their once all-mighty position.
If it wasn't for the efforts of his grandfather, Scorching Wing would have declined to nothing. He worked day and night while fully utilizing what remained from their accumulations. Thanks to his efforts, Scorching Wing managed to remain as one of the higher guilds of the city, although it was still far from its former glory.
In their place, stood a brand new guild, created by the person that led the uprising. And the name of that guild was...
Broken Chain.
The fact that they once again raised to first place was only possible due to the prodigious son of his grandfather: Lorcan Griffin.
Edward knew that his father was far from home for a long while, but when he returned, people had no choice but to recognize him.
Lorcan returned when he was 25, as someone who reached the 5th tier. Taking the advantage of having a genius, who became one of the most powerful people of the kingdom at such an early age, Scorching Wing could compete for the first seat.
After his return, Lorcan's progress was stalemated for a long while, but eventually, he once again broke through and reached the 6th tier. After that, it didn't take long for Scorching Wing to become the most powerful guild in the city of Calven again.
Edward was a newborn when his father reached the 6th tier, so he didn't see the times when they were in fierce competition with Broken Chain.
"What are you contemplating so deeply about, kid?" Victor suddenly talked. He talked with a gentle voice, yet Edward was still startled.
They were now outside, walking towards the garden. Before he could say anything, Victor asked:
"I bet you are wondering why your father chose Broken Chain out of all guilds." His words were frank. Seeing that, Edward decided to answer in the same manner.
"Yes. I know that we have been in peace for a long time, but I can't help but feel like his choice is not random."
Victor smiled inwardly. There were some... things he heard about the kid, but he appreciated that he didn't detour his words. He pondered how he should- no, how he wanted to respond.
"Your father's choice was indeed not random," he looked Edward in the eyes "But it is not something for me to share either. Anyway..." They arrived at a gazebo. Three people were waiting inside. They all respectfully bowed to the old man.
"You need to put these thoughts aside. Let me introduce you to the members of Party 16. They will be your seniors until you depart for the Academy."
Edward examined the people in front of him.
One was a tall man with a large build. He looked like he was in his forties. He didn't possess any distinct features.
The one at the back was someone slim. Edward guessed her to be a woman, but he couldn't be sure. She wore a black half mask that covered anything below her eyes, as well as a dark leather armor set that blended in with the night, making it harder to understand the outline of her body.
The third one, standing next to the tall man, was the most striking person amongst the trio. He was wearing a muffin cap, long boots, and fancy clothes. His face radiated a sense of playfulness.
They would be his seniors for a while, so Edward decided that he should introduce himself first:
"Greetings. I am Edward Griffin. I hope we can get along as a party."
