Ch.1.3「Higher ups」

Ch.1.3「Higher ups」

Feb 24, 2023

Even the library could hold Luhui entertained for so long until she started to feel restless again. Writer's block that the woman had been struggling with made her feel shame, it left a bitter taste in her mouth.

Luhui paused in her tracks, taking a long look at her surroundings.

The bookshelves,

The endless number of books,

The amount of words written in each book.

Luhui felt nauseous. The amount of self-loathing she was feeling right now was overwhelming.

Shoving the book that was in her hand back onto the nearest shelf rather roughly, the female opted for leaving the library as soon as possible. Noticing her grumbling stomach, the dark-haired girl opted for going to the nearest convenience store to grab a quick lunch.

Walking by the shelves, her eyes landed on the vitamins on the shelf along with other medications. Her footsteps slowed down as her eyes were glued onto the bottles and boxes of vitamins.

Footsteps were heard through the hallway as a small girl hurried to pull out the room key and opened the door. "Mom I'm back!" Eyebrows raising in confusion at the absence of her mother in their room, Luhui slides her school bag off her shoulders.

This was their third month living in this foreign country and this room was all they could afford at the moment. Luhui smiled before she opened the door again.

"Aunty Andrea! Have you seen mom?" She yelled towards the long hallway, on cue, one of the doors further down the hallway opened, and out came a woman in her fifties.

"She said she'll be out for a few hours, she'll be back soon don't worry, hon!" Thanking the woman, Luhui retreated into her room. Locking the door behind her, she felt her stomach growl in hunger. Walking to the small fridge in their room, the smile slowly faded away from the girl's face as she was met with an empty fridge.

Luhui slowly closed the fridge, dragging her feet over to her bed. Moments passed by as she heard her stomach growling again. Raising her head, she spotted the bottles of vitamins on the table.

The young girl turned her head away in disgust, those vitamins tasted horrible. narrowed eyes looked back at the table again, taking that the vitamins were the only edible thing remaining in the house for the time being.

"No," Luhui warned herself. Another moment of silence went by until the eleven-year-old couldn't wait anymore.

A pair of small and slender hands reached out to grab her water bottle from her bag and quickly turned to grab the bottles of vitamins. Putting a few tablets onto her hand, Luhui did not waste a second on quickly putting those vitamins into her mouth and gulping it down with water.

Eventually, Luhui's mother returned, welcomed by her daughter immediately helped her with the bags she was carrying. "I brought food that can last us a few days," Her mother informed.

Luhui nodded with a smile. "I'm not quite hungry, we ate a lot at school today so make sure to eat a lot mom." Her eyes wandered to the belly of her heavily pregnant mother. "You're eating for two after all."

The mother pulled her daughter into a gentle hug. Snuggling into her mother, the hunger didn't bother Luhui as much anymore.

Snapping out of her thoughts, a bitter frown appeared on Luhui's face as she quickly walked away from the shelves of medications.

Grabbing a few small sandwiches and a bottle of water, Luhui made her way out after paying for her stuff. Her hand reached out to the side of her neck as she sighed loudly and continued to stay in complete silence for a few more seconds before she walked away.

No idea where she was going but wherever her feet would bring her to.

'ANONYMOUS AUTHOR VIVIAN RUBY ANNOUNCED THE END TO HER WRITINGS' Whoever that is up there, doesn't seem to side with Xu Luhui, hell, when did they ever side with her? She seemed to be going head-to-head with everyone since day one. The gloomy sky above the city seems to agree with Luhui as she sat on a bench and stared at the sky with blank eyes.

It felt like she was failing at life to be completely honest, and Luhui hated tasting the taste of complete failure in her mouth. But we all got to feel that at least once in our lives, it's just that Luhui tasted it way too many times.

The young woman picked her phone up when it rang for the third time in the past five minutes. "What?" she groaned. "Miss Luhui, have you seen the news?" Luhui sighed loudly. "If you mean the announcement that goddamned author has suddenly decided to quit then yes blah blah-"

"No. Miss Luhui, it's the chief operating officer here."

Taking the phone away from her ear, Luhui looked at her screen to check the caller's ID. Tiredly the young woman put her phone back to her ear again. "Why are you calling me instead of my brother? He's the chief executive officer here."

"There has been a major data breach in the company, miss Luhui." From the corner of her eyes, Luhui noticed the billboards on the buildings displaying the headlines of the latest breaking news.

'XU CORPORATIONS: DATA BREACH CAUGHT UP TO XX MILLION PEOPLE'

"...I see."

It was clear to the woman why she received this call. "Miss Luhui, I do not mean any offense but-" The steady voice from the other side of the phone only ticked her off further. "You're suspecting it was me," Luhui couldn't believe this was happening.

"No no Miss Luhui, please refrain from putting words into my mouth. It is just that we are trying to keep everyone close so we can prevent anyone from getting framed." A honk stopped Luhui from replying, and turning her head, dread settled in Luhui as she was met with a familiar car.

"Please get in the car, Miss Luhui. We'll be late for the booked flight."
