They don't have the talent, and the coach doesn't want them to overstrain themselves while trying to achieve the impossible (case in point, the team captain who keeps practicing every night oght) . He was trying to make them understand this, it seems.
So yeah, that answers my question. It's not that he wants them to quit, it's just that they simply don't have what it takes to go pro, unlike what many of them believe. They can still play baseball for fun or any other reason, but they must come to this realisation.
