On a chill day in early January, Daimian Hibb walked down the crowded halls of his school with a somewhat nervous and spastic energy. Classes were back in session and, without his sister to remind him, he had to find a way to be at school at a reasonable time. Instead of going to sleep early and setting an alarm, he took the whole night to patrol the city as Obscurity.
Having gained slight fame, it was regular for him to be seen in the night streets of his hometown. Despite the crime rates since his defeat of Nino Man, he still caught the occasional criminal or two running around along with involvement in more community driven activities. With the help of the holiday season, it was easier to solve problems across the city.
Unfortunately, school being back in session from the two-week break made Daimian more tired than he had ever felt before. Slugging to his homeroom, he sat down in a chair in the back of the class, along with other students by his side. Rubbing his baggy eyes, he dropped his backpack on the floor beside him, yawning as his teacher stood to give a role-call.
"Daimian Hibb," his teacher called.
No response.
"No Daimian Hibb?" The teacher looked up from his board, sternly staring at Daimian. "DAIMIAN HIBB!"
Daimian jerked his head up and raised his hand. "PRESENT," he yelped, watching as the other students chuckled at him a little bit before the calls continued. He set his head on his desk ready to sleep before a paper was gently placed on top of his head. Whizzing himself back up with his hand behind him, he pulled the paper up to his face and read it sluggishly with his blurred vision. "enlgi, yu es hstry, culnry, frenj-" He pulled a crumpled paper copy of his school's map from his pocket and glanced at the room numbers associated with the subjects. "sjit..."
When the bell rang, he lifted his bag to his back and walked to his English class. Going from his homeroom building to across the schools soccer field, he entered the main building with his map in hand. After a tireless search, he finally realized it was on the second floor, hurrying up the stairs before the late bells rang. Picking another seat in the back of the room, he started to doze off, backpack still on his back. Other than being called for role once again, he sat quietly with his feet on the desk in front of him.
The bells rang again an hour and a half later, causing Daimian to hastily wake up once more. He grabbed his bag and trudged to his next class, making his way down the stairs and across the main hall to his next class without a teacher at the desk. Five minutes after the late bells rang, a tall man crazily ran through the room, confusing everybody there.
"THE BRITISH ARE COMING, THE BRITISH ARE COMING!"
Vaguely hearing this and seeing the confusing man, Daimian grabbed his backpack in a tired panic. Unzipping his bag, he nearly pulled out his Obscurity suit before the man grabbed him by the shoulders and shook him around with a smile. "THE BRITISH ARE COMING!" He let go and continued darting around the room, allowing Daimian to cradle his head and give a confused stare at him like the rest of the class. The man left the room before walking back in with a much calmer, almost smug expression on his face. Daimian stared bloodshot at the man as he put the suit back in his bag and firmly zipping it shut. "Hope you all are ready for APUSH this semester, guys," the man said before putting his hands on his chest. "If you couldn't tell, I'll be your teacher for this course."
After a few more introductions and antics from his new US history teacher, Daimian stepped out to the busy hallway with everyone else at the sound of the bell. Looking down at his map, he made his way back to the building he was in for his homeroom just a few hours ago. Stepping to a round table in the back of the room he had to be in, he watched as his culinary students introduced themselves, explaining why they wanted to learn how to cook. As they left for the lunch room in the other building, Daimian snapped out of his quick trance and pulled himself up to the door, shutting it behind him as he walked through the field for the third time that day.
After sitting in the library for the light lunch period, Daimian made his way to his final class that sat on the second floor. With slightly more energy than he had in the morning, he climbed up the stairs and entered the near empty classroom. Remembering the layout of the class from the semester before, he sat at the group of desks nestled in the deepest corner of the room, setting his notebook over his face until the class officially started.
"Bonjour, class. Comment-allez vous? Ca va?" The teacher walked in to the class with her arms open, facing the students that were readjusting themselves to their seats. After a strong silence, she gave a disappointed sigh and sat on a wooden stool in front of the class with a clip board in her hand. "Great to hear from everyone."
To Daimian, the instructions she stated were the same ones he remembered when he took the class in early Autumn. Pick bags up, stand in the front of the room, and be called to a new desk. Being slightly more attentive than earlier in the morning, Daimian was able to make it to his new desk after only being called once, surprised to find it was the seat right next to where he was sitting before. As he sat down, his teacher called for the seat next to him.
"Kelly."
From the front of the room, the girl walked to her seat, her backpack slung to one shoulder. She set it down under the chair as the teacher kept calling the desks. Puffing out her sleek jacket a bit, she nonchalantly glanced over at Daimian to her right. She smirked as she started to speak.
"Sorry for taking your spot."
"Oh," Daimian stammered as he turned to look at Kelly, slightly intimidated by her. "Uh, est ca va."
Kelly chuckled as she heard his comment, covering her mouth with a loose fist and her thumb under her chin. "Bien. Est-ce tu parles Francais dans l'holiday?"
Daimian blankly stared at her for a moment, trying to comprehend what she asked before letting out a confused "huh?"
"Heh-" Kelly chuckled again before turning her whole torso to face Daimian, crossing her arms as they covered the armrest on her right side. "I take that as a no then." She shrugged as Daimian turned his own body towards her. "Don't worry, I don't think I asked it right anyway." She unfolded her arms and put one in front of Daimian with her palms open. "Kelly Kelson."
Daimian paused for a minute before shaking. "Daimian. Daimian Hibb." They let each other go and put their hands to their side. Daimian turned his body to the front of the room, but still glanced between Kelly and the board. "Are you new here? I don't think I've seen you around before."
"Oh no, I've been here," she said, turning herself to the board as well. She waved a hand at her clothes, specifically her black jacket. "Just been a bit hidden, I guess. Also get my hair done every once in a while, so that might be another thing." She paused for a minute before turning back. "So are you one of the hundreds of sophomores taking this course?"
"Junior, actually," Daimian corrected with a little nod up. "How about you?"
Kelly looked down with a smirk and shrugged. "Senior. Pretty much forgot to put in my registration for a language. And since my parents thought I would be 'cheating by taking Spanish,'" she mocked, making air quotes with her fingers, "they shoved me into French."
Daimian nodded with a slightly cheerful exhale and faced the board as their teacher discussed the class syllabus. Over the next hour, the two made sparse quips and conversations to each other about the class until the bell forced them to head home. "Well, it was fun meeting you, Kelly," Daimian said as he put his supplies in his backpack. "Hope to see you tomorrow."
"Yeah, it was nice," Kelly noted, putting her bag back on her shoulder. "Tomorrow's probably not the best for me, though. Got a dentist appointment and I don't want to be late again. But-" she playfully trailed off as she pulled out a note card and a pen. "I can give you this." She quickly wrote on it and handed it to Daimian. "It's my number, in case you want to talk to me."
Daimian slightly blushed and held his face slightly. "Oh, th-thanks." He put it in his pocket and put his backpack on his back. "I'll try to call or something if I'm not busy."
"Sounds good," Kelly said, walking to the door. "Take care, Daimian."
"Hey, you too," Daimian trailed off as she walked out the door. "Kelly..."
