I imagined house parties to be much more fun in theory. Now being at an actual house party, safe to say I hate it here. The house was packed with highschoolers from all the schools in town; both private and public. The lighting was dimmed with LED coloured light bulbs, the music practically shook the house and Hal, Toby and I were just huddled on the couch and I could at least read at surface level that they were in the same boat as I was.
“I’m just gonna get something to drink…” I muttered, getting up from my spot. I could hear Hal say something to me but with the music and teens screaming and chatting among themselves, I just looked over my shoulder and nodded before making my way to the drink table. I could only assume that he told me to just come back and not get lost in the crowd. I pushed through the crowd, the air thickening with the scent of alcohol, vape smoke and marijuana, teens dancing wildly with no sense of rhythm in clusters made it harder to just get a bottle of water.
After what it felt like hours of pushing through, I finally made it to the kitchen island where all the drinks were put on display. Bottles of liquor, cans of beer and empty bottles of soda and red solo cups littered the surface. ‘This can’t be sanitary.’ I looked around the display of drinks for at least one case of water, my eye catching a couple getting it on with each other on the top of the kitchen counter. Suddenly, my need for water vanished and I just wanted to go back to my friends. I started backing away from the scene and the drink only to bump into someone. I turn around only to meet some teen, a spill stain on his shirt.
“You made me spill my fucking drink, fucker.” the guy was slurring and stumbling over his words. “It was the last good vodka soda too, What are you going to do about it?”
“Uhh… sorry?” I said, averting my eye and trying to push past him, only to feel him grab my arm.
“Sorry isn’t going to cut it, twink. I think you need to be taught a lesson.” He grumbled.
‘Shit. Fuck… I have to get away from this guy and fast.’ I thought, I tried to yank my arm out of the guy’s hand only to feel him grip harder as he led me to the staircase of the house. ‘God fucking dammit, let go.’ I kept struggling in this guy’s grasp, I looked around for someone to notice as if anyone would care what’s going to happen to me. This is really happening… I am in a situation where I’m overpowered and everyone is too drunk, high or horny to care.
“Babe, There you are.” I heard someone call out, feeling someone grab my hand. I look over my shoulder to see who it was and thank god it was Hal. “I was looking all over for you, my love”
'What the fuck is Hal doing...?'
“This is yours?” The drunk slurred, swaying back and forth on the stairs.
“Yes, he is my boyfriend. What do you think you’re doing with him?” Hal said bluntly, gently guiding me behind his large figure as if to block me from the drunk guy before us.
“He spilt my fucking drink, faggot.”
“Tough luck.” Hal shrugged, turning away and put his arm around me, walking away from the guy with me close to his side.
“You get fucking back here, you fairy!” We heard him yell over the music, prompting Hal to move faster through the crowd, putting me in front of him.

We eventually made it outside in the clear night, Hal taking my hand and running with me to the car under the moonlight and stars. “Start it! Start it!” He yelled out to Toby who was waiting in the driver’s seat. The car engine rumbled to life and Hal pushed me to the back seat door before getting into the passenger seat in front. I got into the back seats with a slam of the door.
“Shit! Go, Toby! Go, he’s made it out of the house!” Hal said with a laugh, Toby laughing as well as he pulled out of the parking spot carefully before speeding off, the two screaming and whooping from the adrenaline rush. I looked back at the guy, watching him struggle to keep standing like a baby deer.
“What took you so long?” Toby called out, panting from the high as he kept his eyes on the road.
“I got into some trouble with that drunk guy… pretty sure he had plans to fuck me…” I muttered laying back on the back seat.
“Ew, gross.” Hal chuckled, “Been keeping an eye on that guy all night. It was a weird scam he does, he just keeps pouring water on his shirt and makes people do shit for him… mostly creepy shit with girls… why was he talking to you upstairs anyways to do that with you? Usually he gets the guys to take shots or something. Or fist fight him.”
I just shrugged, noticing Toby keeping an eye on me using the rear view window as he drove.
“As long as you're safe… that’s what matters to me is that you’re safe…” Toby sighed, rolling down the windows of the car slightly. “I mean, we… we being Hal and I…” things fell silent, something in the air felt tense or maybe it was just something else.“
Anyway!” Toby cleared his throat, breaking the silence in the car, “What shall we do now? We’ve left the party, we are not going back there. That's for sure.”
“Corner store run, anyone?” I suggested.
“Sounds good to me. Toby?” Hal said with a smile, looking over at Toby. “I do need to gas up quickly. Pretty sure there’s a 24/7 gas and corner store on this road.” Toby said with a smile as well, turning on his signal and merging into a lane.
“Also pretty sure the trails are still open too. We can have our own party there to celebrate the first day of fall”
I leaned my head out of the car as Hal put on some music, it was finally calm… I’m finally with my crowd.
