“Alright Toby, got any crushes lately?” Hal asked with a smirk as the bottle spinning slowed down and landed poor toby. I watched the tension grow between them as we sat on the cool concrete of the trail and park’s parking lot. I didn’t need any bright lights to see that Toby was red in the face at the question, hesitating to answer. I could see him side-eying me but I don’t know why. What was he trying to get me to do?
“Fuck you.” Toby hissed, picking up his energy drink.
“You know the rules - can’t answer, gotta drink.” Hal laughed, leaning back on his hands as we both watched Toby sip from the can.
“If I can’t sleep tonight, it's your fault.” Toby said with a grumble, placing his hand on the empty glass bottle.
“You’re fault, I didn’t choose getting a dumb energy drink like a weirdo”
“Fucking blow me, Bullough.”
The glass scraped against the rocky surface as Toby spun it, waiting for it to stop and point at someone in the circle of 3. I don’t really know how this started. I suggested that we play truth or dare because it’s what I’ve always seen done in the films and shows I watched. Now it’s more like we’re trying to interrogate each other with useless information. Dig up dirt on each other to hold against each other like blackmail but not to that extent.
“Oooo, Cessair…” Hal giggled as he drank.
I looked down to see that the bottle had stopped and was pointing directly at me. ‘Shit. Not again.’
“Same question, got any crushes?” Toby asked, something about the tone of his voice sounded weird to me. As if he was expecting some kind of answer from me or me to not give in to the peer pressure in the situation.
I sat there in silence for a moment before drinking the cherry flavoured fizzing liquid, Hal giggling.
“Ooo, you’re hiding shit!” Hal said, his tone sing-songy
“What? Am not.” I shot back fiddling with the sleeves of my jumper.
“I’ve known you the longest here. You’re hiding something. Spill the beans!”
“I’m not, that's the honest truth. There’s nothing to be spilled, no tea, no beans, no nothing.”
“Yeah… but you are hiding something. You always go completely silent when you’re hiding something.”
I hesitated, I hate that Hal can read my hand no matter how close I hold it to my chest. I sighed, “Really, guys… I don’t like anyone, period. Now can we move on from this…?”
“No, I’m with Hal…” Toby chimed in, “You’re avoided every question regarding any kind of romantic relationship… even the questions about sexual stuff.”
“Yeah… maybe I have a right to not answer questions that I don’t want.”
“We know but… you never talk about your romantic life-”
“Maybe because I never had one to begin with!” I snapped.
I pressed my lips together, holding my tongue as my two friends stared at me. “Fuck my life… they probably hate me now for snapping like that’
“Cessair… is that true?” Hal said, his tone soft like his expression he was making.
I hesitated once more before nodding in response.
“Am… Am I really the only person out of us that hasn’t dated anyone ever?” I asked, my voice shaking.
Toby and Hal nodded slowly in response, making me sigh loudly.
I fell back onto the ground, laying back on my back and looking up at the stars and the moon in the sky. I let an out an heavy exhale through my nose as the air felt to thicken in the air, “Holy shit… I’m the only person here that never had a relationship…”
