"No, No, NO." I scared myself awake with the last no, my body dripping in sweat and my throat completely dry.
"It was just a nightmare honey. You're safe. I'm here." My mum said soothingly into my ears as she held me tight, having run into my room clearly.
She repeated the words over and over until my breathing had slowed down and I became calm. But as soon as the calm spread through my body guilt followed. I had woken her up again.
"Thanks mum." I paused momentarily, "I'm okay, you know that right. I know it was a nightmare and you don't have to worry about me all the time. I know how to look after myself"
I gave her a small reassuring smile. Mum smiled down at me, letting me fall back onto the bed. I felt cold leaving her embrace but her hand gently caressed my cheek making me forget everything for a moment.
"I know sweetie, you just grew up so quickly and after the incident... My mama bear skills are on overdrive."
"I know mum, but I'm okay. I promise."
She soon leaves my room after giving me a small kiss on the forehead. I watch her leave and wait to hear the sounds of her footsteps stop. Soon, a door softly bangs shut and I get up out of my bed, slowly walking towards the kitchen to go get a glass of water and finally quench my thirst.
***
"BEEP BEEP"
The sound of my alarm rang loudly through the air, waking me up for the first day of school. Pushing the snooze button down, I look to see 5:45 am on the digital clock. I quickly rush to my bedroom shower, using it one last time, savoring every last drop of hot water before I move onto the school campus.
After having lived with two older brothers for half of my life, I knew how precious hot water was and I cannot even fathom the thought of how rare it would be on campus with so many people, even if the school was an ultra exclusive Sports Academy like Oaksfields.
I knew for a fact there are a lot of girls who loved their hot showers and boys who'd take extremely long showers, using the water whenever and however long they felt like it.
Getting out of the shower, I decided to wear a blue rounded neck t-shirt with black shorts and my converse shoes. I had picked it out yesterday not wanting to waste time in the morning trying to cover up my scar.
Doing one last check in the mirror, I straightened my long curly brunette hair and looked at my outfit. I was proud with my decision on choosing this t-shirt as it was just the right size to hide the scar displayed on my left collarbone. I quickly added mascara to make my aqua blue eyes pop and a touch of lipstick for my first day- after all impressions can sometimes be everything.
I heard my phone ding as I picked up my bag on my chair. I picked my phone up off my wooden desk to see I had received a message from my dad.
Good luck on your first day at your new school sweetie, I hope you have fun.
Love you lots, your favorite parent- dad.
"Honey, are you ready?" I heard my mum shouting from downstairs.
"Yes, mum! I'm coming downstairs now."
"Okay sweetie. I'll be in the car and I've got a surprise to tell you about." Mum yelled.
I heard the front door bang shut and did one last look around my room, making sure I had everything. Opening my door, I saw my brother, Nicolas, walking past my room in nothing but a towel. His short wavy brunette hair was dripping water everywhere.
"F*ck Nico! Put some clothes on!" Kai, my other brother yelled coming into view.
He was dressed in a suit, the red tie still a little loose around his neck. Like he was just tightening it up as his curly brunette hair was left disheveled.
"What's wrong? I'm decent." Nico simply replied back, taking a bite from the apple he was holding. "If you're worried about me not-"
"Dude, we need to be there in 5 mins."
"Be where?" I asked, stepping out of my room.
Kai looked at me in shock and was about to reply when Nico interrupted. "Oh we're going to work today. It's at-"
"Dumb*ss! You forget something?"
Kai was looking at Nico weirdly. The two were definitely hiding something from me. "Whatever. I don't have time for you two."
Walking past the bickering two, I ran down the stairs, past the kitchen and to the driveway. I hopped into the car and fastened my seatbelt.
"So mum, what's the surprise?" I asked, looking at her.
Mum was wearing her beige pants suit with a black shirt underneath allowing for her emerald eyes to capture my gaze.
"It's at your school." Mom simply replied back, pulling her burgundy blonde curls behind her ear. "Are your brothers still here?"
"Yeah. They're bickering in the hallway."
"They said they were going to be quick. Gone before I left..." Mum muttered under her breath before turning to me. "Is it okay if I make a quick stop at the gas station? I need to grab something there."
"Okay."
Mum quickly drove to the gas station and went inside the small shop next to it. After a few minutes she came back out and smiled at me, before starting the car again. Honestly, everyone was acting weirdly today.
As we drove to the academy, my stomach turned and knots began to form. I didn't like not knowing about things that are important and frankly school was important to me so what surprise could there be at school.
We got to the academy within 5 minutes later. I jumped out of the car as soon as we parked, anticipation getting the best of me.
I look around, searching for anything out of the norm, but nothing...
"Ah, it seems they are running a bit late." my mum muttered under her breath. "Even after that stop..."
"Who's late," I questioned.
"Hurry your big ass up, we were supposed to be there in 5 minutes and now we are five minutes late!" a voice boomed from the entrance of the school, with loud thumping footsteps following.
"My ass is not that big!" another voice boomed.
At first I didn't recognise these voices but within seconds of hearing them, I now knew what my surprise was and boy am I not prepared for it.
Walking up to the car were my two older brothers, Nico looking as though he just escaped a beating from Kai. They were both wearing suits and I finally realized fully what mum's surprise was.
"They're not seriously..."
"Hey Fray." Kai grabbed me into a big bear hug as if he didn't just see me a few minutes ago at home. "Mind greeting your older brothers and newest members of the Oaksfield Faculty."
"No way. This is not happening. I'm just dream-"
Nicolas, obviously getting annoyed, pulled me out of Kai's embrace, pushing me towards the school gate."You're going to be late so let's get moving."wait
Kai closed the car door quickly and walked behind us, muttering, "Says the dumb*ss that made us late."
"Aren't you three forgetting something?" Mum's voice suddenly called out.
We all turned to see mum holding my bag in one hand, standing in a perfect mom pose. I ran over to her, taking the bag from her.
"Thanks mum." I said, leaning in to kiss her on the cheek. "Love you."
"Yeah, we're going to miss you." Kai coughed before giving mum a side hug, squashing me in the process.
"And your cooking." Nico added coming in for a group hug.
"F*cking idiot." Kai elbowed Nico in the stomach.
"Don't call your brother names, Kai, and you better behave yourselves. All of you." Mum muttered, looking at us all before giving each of us a quick kiss. "Good luck, Fray and I love you all."
After that mum hopped back into her car and drove off, leaving the three of us standing outside of the academy to start our new adventure.
Turning to my brothers, I exclaimed, "You better explain yourselves."
