There are so many things that can go wrong. From the moment William steps out of his professor's office to the moment he realizes that he has to search for the guy who just called him a thief. William knows... or he has now realized that this person, this Oliver is none other than the roommate of Jason who was out of town a week ago.
Not that that's not bad enough, because William has tried his possible best to forget that failure of a one-night stand, but he also can't seem to find the tall blond anywhere. Being unable to find him as well as Jason himself was not something William had anticipated when he had only four hours to submit the assignment. Once he left the office, he set off to find the guy or a-hole as he had deemed him in his mind, thinking that the man was still in the building. William combed the four floors of the science building until he realized that the tall man could have actually left.
Oliver, the name replays in William's mind. Oliver. With a name like that, it's no wonder finding him is a nightmare, William thinks. How is he going to find one tall blond man with green eyes on a campus of over 25,000 students?
How do I even know that he has green eyes?
William doesn't have time to answer that question because, at this point, he is almost close to throwing himself in a lake. That was a much easier death than walking around campus without food in his stomach. His first thought is to go to Jason's dorm with the hope of meeting him there and perhaps his roommate as well. If Oliver is not there, Jason would definitely have a way to find him.
It's a good plan... until William begins to think of what the frat house is called.
Pi Beta Gamma?
Alpha Alpha Kappa?
Delta Kappa Sigma?
"Fuck. Me!" William groans. He leans against a pillar in the courtyard of the science building and almost slides down to the floor.
There has to be a way to solve his dilemma. There was, except that it came with dire consequences. With enough courage, William sucks in a deep breath and takes out his phone.
"This is for you, prof," he whispers.
Hey girl! He presses send.
What's up? Hope you good!
What's the name of the frat house on campus?
It's a bit rude, but William needs to go straight to the point. He breathed in and hits send. Almost instantaneously, his phone rings. He winces, but answers it anyway.
"You fucker!" Alyssa's voice screams. "How very dare you?"
"Hi, Alyssa!" William responds with a little enthusiasm. It's not very nice to ditch your best friend for a night of video games and then call her shortly after to ask for a favor.
"Don't you Hi me," she mocks. "You stood me up at my back-to-school party!"
"I know, Aly, and I'm so sorry. I'll make it up to you," William promises.
Alyssa is quiet for a moment. She knows her friend, it's not like him to back out on promises. But he did hurt her by standing her up to play video games so she's not sure to forgive him. Still, she couldn't stay mad at him forever, could she?
William's shoulders sag in relief when he hears her sigh.
"Fine," Alyssa groans. "You owe me. Big time!"
"You're literally the sweetest!"
"Save it for your mistresses," she remands.
"I don't have mistresses."
"Yes 'cause you got no bitches," the girl laughs. "Seriously though, it's called Sigma Phi Alpha and maybe if you paid attention to what people tell you, you wouldn't forget things too easily."
William smiles at her advice. "Thank you! You're a doll," he says gratefully and rushes out of the science building, all the way to the shuttle station and to the frat house on the west campus.
The three-story building is familiar to him although it was quite dark the last time he was here. The front door is open so William makes his way in without much trouble. He's not sure where Jason's room is so he asks one of the guys he meets in the foyer who is such a doll.
William finds the man in his room, playing on his computer. When Jason sees him, he smiles, as if he has been waiting for him... no, it's as if he's happy to see William. It doesn't make sense to William but he doesn't think much of it.
"I know you," Jason says as William enters the room. It looks bigger than he remembers. The beds are on opposite ends of the wall, there's a desk in the middle with a desktop monitor. Jason is using a laptop though which makes William think that the monitor is Oliver's. The rest of the room isn't all that remarkable. It's just a dorm room in a house.
"Yeah, I'm the guy you puked on," William states with a small smile.
Jason laughs. "William, right? I have no idea what happened that night."
It's cute, William thinks. He wants to remember what happened and how William tucked him in bed like the Good Samaritan he was. And then maybe he'll ask William out for dinner or breakfast and they can go back to finish what they started that night. Yeah, cute. But William does not want to get into how he bathed and put this man to sleep.
He needs to find who he's looking for because time is running out.
"Um... I'm actually looking for your roommate, Oliver?"
It seems that this is the moment where it clicks for Jason. The man looks up from his laptop and watches William slowly, taking him in. His eyes widen. "Yo, is that Ollie's hoodie?"
"Yeah... he literally accused me of stealing it when you told me to pick anything from the closet after my shirt got ruined."
"Damn, bro. I'm sorry. My closet is that one," Jason says, pointing to the closet next to the one William took the hoodie from. There were two closets. And William had not noticed because of how dark the room was.
Fuck!
It was no wonder the hoodie was so damn big. "Oh!" William feels dumb. "I didn't realize there were two closets," he explains and then remembers why he's in the room in the first place. "But I really do need to find your roommate. I bumped into him and got my assignment mixed with a pile he was holding. So, where's he?"
"Right here."
The voice startles William, sending shivers down his spine. He whirls around to see the tall man walking into the room. The way he stares at him, with a gaze so intense makes the room feel smaller than it already is. William is stationary, but he feels as if he's being backed into a corner. His eyes never leave Oliver's because he knows it'll be a sign of defeat or admission of guilt.
But this, this stubbornness - however we'll call it - is what makes William notice him. This is the first time William actually sees Oliver.
The man isn't just tall and blond with green eyes. No... he's more than that. He's tall, but the kind of tall that gets bigger and bigger when he nears you, almost making you feel intimidated and small. But it also makes you want to throw yourself in his arms and fall asleep on his chest. His hair was not just blond. It was like a light shade of honey with very light strands in between that glowed in the sun. The front part was parted in the middle, making those very light strands frame his high cheekbones. They complimented those green eyes of his which seemed to hold so much story in them. A simple look in them leaves William mesmerized and unable to look away.
"Hmm?"
"What?" William blinks. His mind did not just freeze on him, did it?
"Did you come to return my hoodie?" Oliver asks. His voice is sultry, like music to William's ears. It almost makes him forget why he's here in the first place.
"No." William frowns. He tries to regain his composure. His neck suddenly feels cold with sweat. He can feel the slight stings of cold sweat on his face and arms even though he's wearing the simple black large hoodie in question. Why does he feel like a kid with a crush? It does not make sense, especially not when the crush in question is the man staring him down who just accused him of stealing.
It also doesn't help that the man in question is merely a foot away, glaring daggers in his direction.
"What do you mean no?" Oliver's lips are pursed, his brows arched in confusion. Somehow, William takes note of how he looks. He probably shouldn't, but he's right there! He cannot help but look.
William licks his lips and gulps. "Just no... look, I came to get my assignment back as it got swapped with one of your papers."
Oliver stares at William for a second or two and then scoffs. He puts a hand on his waist and cocks his head. "So, you stole my hoodie, denied it, and still had the guts to come back here demanding your paper?"
William's mouth opens and closes. His brain is freezing on him again. How exactly could he come back from being flamed so badly?
"Listen, Ollie or whatever your name is, I did not steal your hoodie," William begins lowly, getting frustrated that they're back to this point. "You can ask Jason here-" he glanced at Jason who looks amused. "-who has been very helpful by the way- that I simply mistook your closet for his and since he puked on my shirt, I had no other choice but to get another," William explains.
Oliver looks from William to Jason and back again. William closes his eyes in frustration. He just wants to get his assignment back and crawl under his sheets. Literally, anything else was better than being here in a room with these guys, he thinks.
"Can I have my work back now? Seriously. I'm already in trouble as it is."
Oliver shrugs. "I don't have it anymore."
"Excuse me?" William feels like he's just received news of his puppy's death. "What? Where is it?"
"Not here?"
Many scenarios go through William's mind at this point, the most recurring one being defenestrating Oliver and Jason. He glared at the two men in the room, angry with Oliver's dismissiveness. Was he really going to lose marks because of a simple misunderstanding?
"You're kidding." William does not want to believe that all his work has been for naught.
Again, Oliver shrugs. "So, my hoodie?"
The fucking balls on this guy! "Call us even," says William. "You took my assignment, so now I'm actually taking your hoodie," he says calmly even though he's boiling inside.
William leaves them in their frat house. He thinks about going back to his apartment, reprinting his assignment, and submitting it in less than four hours. He can do it. There's no problem. He just has to find a printer that isn't swamped by students.
At this point, William really wishes he hadn't gone out that night.
