Ethel looked at the rogue’s dismayed face and shook her head with contempt as she slammed the heavy wooden door shut.
“Who was that, my love?” Ethel turned around with a
smile at the melodious voice behind her.
The slender young woman walking up to her from the inner chamber returned Ethel’s smile with as much fondness.
“Just a fool, Genève, with no gold to pay for what he wanted.” Ethel took the dark haired woman’s soft smooth hands into her rough, callused ones. “But he did bear some bad news.”
“About his majesty.” Genève nodded, her large amber eyes misting. “I overheard some of it.”
