Chapter 2: Two Hunters

In the heart of the woods, the hunt truly began! 

More howling could be heard in the far distance.

The deeper they ventured into the dark woods, the more howling they could hear, and the louder and more menacing it was also becoming.  

“You sure you’re cut out for this, Michael?”

“This again? I am a much better hunter than you believe me to be. Trust me. I’ll definitely show you,” the young man confronted Maleva once more. 

“Sure…” 

I don’t really know what it is… Huh… I feel so strange. The more time I spend in the woods tonight and the warmer it gets. It typically isn’t like this. It doesn’t make any sense. It’s typically much colder at this hour and at this time of the year. And for some reason, I feel drawn to him… I don’t know why, but I want to be standing a bit closer to him. It started earlier when he first came out of the bushes. He’s just as warm as I am. If not hotter. He smells great, as well. I never thought I’d feel that way. I also feel like I am blushing. It’s crazy. Is that… My nipples hardening for some reason? What’s going on with me all of a sudden? Maleva asked herself as she was still at the head of this duo of hunters. Still leading the hunt. 

“Maleva, are you alright?” Michael finally asked her, as he had been observing her walking a bit odd for the past few minutes. Walking a bit more sloppily than usual. Not like a huntress. 

“What? Yeah. Why?” She kept walking forward, but did turn to him. Turned out that she was blushing even more now.

“Are you sick or something?” Michael asked her.

“Would you like to take a short rest or something…? We have been scouting these parts of the woods for the last, past hours now… We should take a break…” She suggested.

“Sure. Why not?”

“Too bad we can’t have a bonfire during such a dangerous hunt…” Michael remembered.                   

“We don’t need a bonfire to warm ourselves up since you’re already around…” She mentioned to him, as she blushed, accidentally letting something slip out.

“What?” A huge amount of confusion overwhelmed him.   

“N—Nothing…” She quickly looked the other way. 

“Is there something you want to tell me?” He asked her.

“It’s just that… I don’t know what’s going on with me… I’ve been feeling strange since earlier… My body feels so hot all the time… And… And… I feel like I want to give you a hug…” She admitted.         

“A hug? You don’t seem like the type of person who enjoys giving and receiving hugs, but sure… Why not?” The young man accepted her request and gave her one big hug. … The young man was just about to tell her that she could totally do this for him when a strange stomping noise was suddenly heard behind them…

Everything stopped. 

Michael was the first one to pause everything and turn his head around. Then, when she noticed that something was off, Maleva did as well. 

Before they knew it, another wolf stalked them and jumped at them! Judging from the look of it, this beast, which was much bigger than the two other ones from earlier, meant to attack Maleva and her alone. Leaping at her! Attempting to maul her throat.         

“No!” 

However, at the last second, Michael swiftly jumped and placed himself between her and the animal! 

He stopped it! 

But, this also meant that instead of biting Maleva, the fierce wolf bit him! He mauled his right arm! 

Taking a serious chunk out of it! 

“Ahn!” Michael screamed in pain. 

“Michael!” 

It was too late. He had already been bitten. 

Blood was drawn. 

The wolf eventually let go of his arm and then escaped into the forest. 

Michael collapsed on the ground and fainted not too long after saving Maleva’s life.

“Michael?” 

He was done for.     

They were now so deep in the woods that they were too far to come back to their village, now… Like this, it was going to take too long to bring him back by carrying him. She had to think of something else. She had to find something else.
