“Is there anyone that you’re suspecting?”
She was sitting stiffly behind the desk, typing the report with robotic fingers, her glassy eyes still avoiding his. After long hours of questioning, medical exams, and just plain chaos, he had to respond, for the hundredth time, to the same questions. ...AT FIVE IN THE MORNING!
“Nop, I’m an honest man,” he replied melodramatically, “probably some lunatic who lost against me!”
“Any case that comes to mind?”
“Not really. I mean, I represent mostly companies, and once in a while, I take a pro bono case.
“I’m gonna need a list of all your cases from the past year.”
“Uu, the police are quite diligent these days...”
“This is for your own benefit, so I strongly advise you to cooperate,” she argued with the tone of a bored functionary.
“Sure, I’m just saying, there are a lot of cases to study.”
“Leave that worry to us! For now, if you have nothing else you want to add...”
“No, not really...”
“Then, we should call it a night,” she concluded in the same placid tone, snapping the lid of the laptop. Without any further due, she got up and grabbed her leather jacket.
“We’ll keep you updated,” she threw the words halfway headed to the door.
“Hey, wait a second! I need a ride,” he shouted offended when he realized he was just being left there.
“Take a cab!” she replied unbothered, without signs of slowing down.
“Yeah, well, I just got out of a murder attempt, I didn’t exactly think of taking my wallet when you people swooped me up, so how am I supposed to pay?” he started whining while closely following her.
“Sell your soul!”
“You know, considering we pay your wages, you people should at least take responsibility and offer complete services to the victim. How do you expect a guy in my situation to get home at this hour?!
“Seduce the secretary,” she blurted as the elevator doors were closing in his face.
“The nerve on this guy! I can’t believe it. He sooo gets on my nerves with his yapping and whining and… breathing.” She kept mumbling to herself like that all the way to her car, like a crazy person. She barely settled in, when he jumped in the next seat from …out of nowhere.
“If you like walking on your own feet, get out now!” she thundered, rolling her eyes, and enunciating menacingly the last words.
“You’re headed to Amy, aren’t you? I’m coming with you!” he said calmly, confronting her death stare. “I need to see her. It’s the least I can do.”
Again, that candor in his tone, which seemed to find its way past her defense perimeter, made her shift her rigid gaze to the front.
“Fine! Only because you do owe her an apology! But you better be begging for forgiveness when we get there, like your life depends on it, ‘cause if you make her cry again, I swear, I’ll kick your ass sooo bad...” her rage was reaching top levels with every word she spoke.
As much as she was anticipating their encounter, not in a million years would she have expected that reaction from Amy when they entered her room.
