Holidays
Tomorrow I'm going to Brazil for two weeks, I'm really excited because I'm going there with Peter, I can't imagine how we'd manage to go so long without seeing each other. I'm still wondering if I have everything packed because I'm afraid I'll forget to take something with me.
-Mum have you seen my sunglasses anywhere?
- Lying on the kitchen table
-THANKS
All right, I think I've got everything, now I just need to get my bag to the car so I don't have to in the morning
Peter
Have you packed yet?
Jake
Sure, I'm already ready for our holiday
Peter
Me too, we got to see the Iguazu Falls and go to Salvador.
Jake
We will definitely go and we also have to ride the cable car to the top of Corcovado
Peter
I'm already looking forward to it, I don't know if I'll fall asleep
Jake
You have to go to bed because tomorrow you will be tired
Peter
Okay, okay I’ll try
Jake
And that’s what I wanted to hear, Good night
Peter
Good night, I love you
Jake
I love you too.
The next day
-Jake get up or we'll miss the plane
-I'm already up mum
As soon as I got dressed and my parents and I had breakfast, we drove to the airport. We agreed with the Williamses that we would meet them there. They were already waiting for us there. Pete said they had been there for probably an hour. They're always ahead of schedule because they're afraid they're going to be late.
After checking in at the airport, we were already on the plane and waiting for the start and our holiday to begin. Pete sat by the window because he wanted to admire the view and I sat next to him and we started talking about what we needed to see first. I also wanted to talk to him about my dad because I was worried about him.
-Hey are you asleep?
-Not now and what's going on? You look worried
-I'm worried about my dad
-Why? Has something happened to him?
-For some time now he has become a different person, he has lost a lot of weight and is tired all the time, he has started to work at home and it is as if he has no strength left. Once, when we were going on holiday, he could carry two suitcases into the car and still laugh that he could carry something else in, but now he has difficulty taking one suitcase. I'm afraid something is happening to him, I asked him once if he was OK and he said yes, that he's just not in his twenties anymore. My mum also said everything was fine, but I feel that something is wrong
-Oh Jake take it easy I'm sure everything is fine with your dad, maybe he's overworked and needs rest. if you are so worried about it try talk to your dad again. Tell him what you've noticed and that you're worried about him, if you want I can help you with this remember I'll always support you because I love you
-I love you too. I don't know what I would do without you
- I bet nothing
-maybe
-Get some sleep because we still have a long way to go
3 hours later
-Pete How long before we are there?
- In about 7 hours
-what? why so long?
- Because Brazil is a bit far from England, try to get some more sleep
-I can't, what are you reading?
- I'm reading a book about a detective who is trying to find his daughter who disappeared 10 years earlier.
- And what did he find her?
-I don't know because I'm only on page 50
It seemed like the flight took forever but finally, after twelve hours of flying and probably a million of my questions about how long we would be, finally we were in Sao Paulo.
We landed in the middle of the night and all anyone was thinking about was finally being able to go to bed. Fortunately, the journey from the airport to the hotel was not long.
We got accommodated at the hotel and went to our rooms. Me and my parents were in one room and Peter with his parents and sister in the other.
The next day I got up at probably twelve o'clock, everyone was already up and waiting for me because they wanted to go for a walk and see what was around. It was really hot but what could you expect in the middle of summer. We ate something and went to the beach, it was very beautiful and we jumped in the water straight away and I don't think we came out of it for two hours. After a while my parents went back to the hotel and Peter's parents stayed with us. We were only supposed to see what the beach looked like today, and we spent the whole day there. Only my mum came to dinner because my dad was feeling a bit worse, I felt something was wrong, my mum can't lie but as soon as I asked she said it wasn't a big deal and he would be better tomorrow.
I wanted to believe her but I couldn't because it wasn't the first time this had happened, Pete must have noticed that I was worried about my dad about grabbed my hand and tried to reassure me
- Are you all right?
-They don't tell me everything
-Surely if there was something bad going on they would definitely tell you about it
-Maybe you're right
I wasn't reassured by Peter's words because I also know that my parents don't want to burden me with their problems, but I would like to know what's going on because he's my dad and I love him and I can see that something bad is happening to him.
- Hello, you are here
- What? Yes yes yes- I guess I'm not a good actor because Peter took my hand and we walked out of the restaurant outside. He told his parents we were going to get some air.
- Jake I can see this is really bothering you, try to have an honest conversation with your dad, you always said you had a strong bond
- It's pointless, they don't want to tell me anything
- Maybe I'll try to talk to your dad maybe I can find out something.
-will you do it?
- For you? Of course. Come on back to the rest, it'll be fine.
Maybe Peter is right that I worry too much, maybe he's just overtired and will be better in a few days. I don't know anymore, I guess all I have left to do is wait for Peter to find out something. I tried to sleep all night but couldn't, all I could think about was Dad all the time. I finally managed to fall asleep for about three hours. My mum woke me up and said we had to go to breakfast because we were going to the cable car to the top of Corcovado in the afternoon.
I asked if Dad was coming with us, but she said he was feeling better but it would be good if he still stayed at the hotel today.
Jake
My dad is not coming with us again
Peter
I am sorry, but I have an idea
Jake
Which one?
Peter
I'll say I'm feeling unwell today and can I stay at the hotel and when you go I'll talk to your dad
Jake
You want to do it? You miss the rollercoster
Peter
I've had enough of queues after your birthday
Jake
After all, it was fun
Peter
I nearly threw up
Jake
Hahahahah I remember
After breakfast everyone except my dad and Peter went to the top of Corcovado, I was sad that Pete couldn't see such beautiful views because of me and I wanted to make it up to him somehow, I thought a lot and thought about having a picnic on the beach just the two of us. I was woken up from my constant pondering by a notification from my phone:
Peter
Sorry, I didn't manage to find out anything ☹
This news somehow didn't surprise me because I felt it would, I know my parents and I know they would rather hide bad things from me than tell me.
Jake
Don't worry I said it would happen, but thank you for trying
As soon as we got back, I immediately told Peter about my idea to go to the beach with two of us, he agreed without hesitation. We took blankets to have something to sit on, food drinks and off we went. We sat down on a blanket Peter put his head on my shoulder and said he was glad we were here together, we admired the beautiful sunset and asked such a nice lady to take our picture. We got back quite late and because of this we were challenged by Peter's mum that we shouldn't be walking in a strange city at such a late hour, we knew this so we just apologised and went to our rooms.
As always I was gasping for the longest time but this time I wasn't woken up by my mum but by my dad
-Jake get up how much you can sleep, you'll sleep through the whole holiday
-Dad? Are you feeling better yet?
-Of course. Get up today we are going to the Museu de Arte
I didn't know what to say, my dad was behaving as he did before. Maybe he had actually rested properly and his strength had returned.
-Okay is already up
I finally started to feel like I was on holiday, it was better with my dad so I had nothing to stress about and could just enjoy being in Brazil with my loved ones.
The museum was very interesting, only Peter's sister Sophia seemed bored. Then we went for food and it was really tasty. I kept looking at my dad and was glad he was with us.
A few days later
The last few days have been really great. We saw a lot of sights and were on the beach every day, we even caught a helicopter flight and best of all my dad was still with us and not once did he say he was unwell and would stay. I'm glad he's better now and today we're going to Rio de Janeiro and will stay there until the end of our holiday. The road took about six hours and we made frequent stops to eat or get settled. My parents took us on a boat cruise and we saw the statue of Christ, the beach, the hills and many beautiful sights we had never seen. It felt like a dream and I didn't want it to ever end.
For our second day in Rio, my parents had planned a trip to the Sugarloaf head, a hill that gives you a view of Rio from 400 metres above sea level. Standing there we could already see the statue of Christ, the mountains, the bays and the beach. I hope I'm not here for the last time.
- Hey Pete we need to come here again sometime, maybe after the wedding?
- Then we would first have to take it
I smiled at Peter grabbed his hand and said
-We'll definitely make it one day, and then we'll fly here- Pete laughingly replied
-Are you already planning our wedding? You're fast
-Of course I am
It's a shame we already had to go back to the hotel because I would have still stayed here. In the evening my parents had a little party, they went to our room and I Pete and Sophia stayed in theirs. Sophia went to her room to watch some TV and we sat on the sofa and leaned against each other and sat like that in silence. We don't need to talk to each other all the time, our presence is enough.
-And how is your Dad? Because I think he's feeling better now,
-Yes, that's better- -This was our first conversation about my dad since Peter tried to find out something from him, I think he saw that this topic was hard for me and that's why he preferred not to say anything about it
-I think he's better, he hasn't stayed at the hotel once and he still walks around smiling.
-I'm glad he's better now and you've become more cheerful too
-I am. It feels like a big weight has fallen off me
-you know Jake I have an idea let's go to the movies tomorrow
-to the cinema? For what?
-I don't know, but I would go for a Brazilian film
-Only that we don't know the language
-And so what? We'll be guessing what's going on. Come on, it'll be funny
-Okay okay- This one has ideas, I wonder what else he will come up with during our holidays.
My parents must have had a good time, so when we came into the room in the morning they were sleeping like babies and there was a big mess everywhere. We woke them up and asked if the two of us could go to the cinema, they agreed so we let them sleep some more and left.
As soon as we arrived at the cinema Pete, with the help of a translator, ordered tickets, we bought pop corn and entered the cinema auditorium. It was very different to the ones in England. After finding our seats we sat down and waited for the film to start. The whole film we tried to understand what it was about but we didn't, every now and then we would look at each other and ask each other do you understand any of this? We knew we would but we still had fun.
After watching the film we talked a lot about what it could have been about there. I had my theories and Pete had his. On the way back to the hotel we bought some more ice cream and were curious to see if the parents had recovered from yesterday's event. The last attraction on our holiday is Iguazu Falls.
From the start of the trip Pete was looking forward to this, we had a long drive of over twenty hours. At the beginning we were going to go there straight away leaving Sao Paulo, but my dad had the idea that before we went there we could go to Rio de Janeiro, although it was really nice there, now we had a really long way to go.
We left at 11pm and at first we played various games and talked a lot but eventually we all fell asleep apart from Peter's dad who was driving and my mum. I'm not a fan of long journeys and this one was really long, we weren't even halfway there yet. Peter's mum laughed that we wouldn't forget a holiday like this for a long time, and she was right. After about 30 minutes we got back in the car and moved on. It's hard for me to believe that in three days we're already going home, I remember packing for the trip and I'm about to come back from it. Time goes by very quickly. Well back to school we are now going to grade 12 with Peter, we are a bit stressed about it but we know everything will be fine, it has to be.
After some 10 naps, long conversations and many stops, we finally arrived. We were there at 9pm and we were all so tired that we immediately went to bed. Something strange happened because my parents asked me to sleep in Peter's room that night,
I didn't know why, because apart from that one time when they had a party and we sat in Peter and his sister's room
They wouldn't let us do it. I went to Peter and asked if he knew anything about it but he said he found out about it from his parents.
Maybe they wanted to spend some time with each other just the two of them, we also do that with Peterm when we go to the beach or to the cinema we want to spend that time just the two of us.
Pete woke me up first thing in the morning I don't know if he slept at all because he was so excited about these waterfalls. As soon as I saw them I already knew why Peter wanted to see them so much they were really beautiful. In fact if I had to describe my holiday in two words I would use the words Beautiful views because they really were.
Unfortunately the day of viewing the waterfalls was also our last day of holiday. Tomorrow we have to go home which means we have a long plane ride again, but at that point Pete said he had a super plan for the flight.
-Trust me Jake this flight will be great
-Why? What have you come up with?
-Never mind, you'll see tomorrow, but don't worry you won't be bored for sure
-I'm already scared
We had the plane very early and I was so tired I don't even remember how I got on the plane. After about two hours of sleep I was poked by Peter
-You're asleep?
-I would love to, why?
-I'd like to show you something
-What's that?
