These were Seth's friends from the other esper class. In fact, in Hyperion Academy, there were 2 esper classes and three non-expert classes per grade level. Obviously, this was not the case for every academy. For example, Crimson academy, the first-ranked academy in Sunrise City and the 5th world-ranked academy, only had one esper class and one non-esper class per grade level. Their students were considered the elite among the elite in Sunrise City. In fact, in the academy world ranking, from the 25th ranked to the 6th ranked academy, they are all considered elites and at the same level since there was almost no difference in results from these academies. However, the top 5 stood out even from the elite.
"Hi, guys," said the boy with a tired face as he sat down.
"Wow, what happened to you? You look like a zombie dude" asked Jake
"This dumbass didn't sleep yesterday because of that new game that was recently released," said the girl as she also sat down.
"Hey Ilya, don't call me dumbass, I'm really… *yawn* …smart"
Ilya rolled her eyes in annoyance as she heard this
"Hey Viktor maybe you should try sleeping a little or you won't be able to keep up," Seth said
"Can't, I have a math exam later and I need to study"
"You have an exam today?!" Seth asked in disbelief as he saw the half-sleep state Viktor was in.
"I'm not even surprised," Ilya said as she took out a book.
"Well, not yet... But I still have time, I'm just gonna eat something with sugar to wake me up. Plus, the exam isn't even that hard"
"Partial differential equations exam," Ilya said as she calmly read her book.
"Eek" Jake felt a shiver as he heard the topic of the exam. "Dude you're screwed"
"C'mon have a little more faith in me"
"You said that during our last exam and you barely passed," Ilya said
"But I DID pass"
"Just because you were lucky"
"I think the term you are searching for is 'talented'" Viktor said with a smirk.
"Whatever," Ilya said as she focused on her book again.
"And what about you guys?"
"I beat Jake's ass during sparring," Seth said with a proud look.
"And then we got late to class because you were daydreaming with Stella Gunvald"
"What? N-no" Seth answered a little nervously, to which Jake only smirked.
"She's really awesome, she's in my class and always scores first in the exams. She's the reason why Ilya is always second in scores" Viktor said as he began ordering his food on the tactile screen.
"Tsk, I don't wanna hear that coming from you," Ilya said annoyed.
"As you can see she doesn't really like her"
"She's just another arrogant, cocky, and spoiled brat"
"Huh? Have you talked to her?" Jake asked curiously.
"Well… no… but she has to be," Ilya said hesitantly
"Don't listen to her, she just doesn't like being a second place," Viktor said "I've actually talked a little to her once before, she seems kind. And I have to say I did expect her to be the way Ilya described, but she didn't seem that way"
"You hear that Seth, maybe you actually have a chance," Jake said while smirking
"Oh shut up, don't make me beat your ass again"
"Anytime, I'll make sure to hunt you down with my ability"
"Tsk" Seth couldn't respond to that. This made Viktor laugh a little just before a drone delivered his food and a piece of chocolate cake.
"Yummy, bon appetite," he said as he began eating.
"You're not gonna order something Ilya," Seth asked
"I'm okay, I already ate the meal I brought"
"By the way, Ilya is really a great cook, she gave me a bit of her food and it was delicious," Viktor said.
"Is that true?" Jake asked
"I have cooked since I was little so I'm pretty good at it, and I frankly prefer eating something I made. Sadly I don't have always the time"
The 4 friends continued for a while talking as they ate. Then they separated to go to their respective classes.
Ring! Ring! Ring!
And just like that the bell rang indicating the end of the last class.
"Wanna hang out for a while?" Jake asked Seth as they walked down the hallway.
"Sorry, but I have to stay, I still have awakening class, remember?"
"Oh yeah, well, don't worry. Good luck. I hope you will show me your ability tomorrow dude" Jake said as he left.
The class Seth was talking about was a class that was mandatory since the first day of school for kids and was still compulsory for all the espers that still didn't awaken their ability. For kids, it was supposed to help them awaken their abilities by themselves. As for non-awakened espers, it was supposed to help them awaken their ability by using more practical methods such as pills and hypnosis. The class also helped the students to have a better understanding of how to project their observer's reality into the world. As one could expect, the class didn't have that many results since the rate of late-awakening espers was very low. However, the possibility of having a really powerful new esper made all top academies make this awakening class mandatory until the last year of high school when the non-awakened espers would pass to a non-esper class to receive reorientation.
As Seth entered the classroom, more students could be seen. However, there weren't that many since most of the students had normal awakenings a long ago, or gave up on awakening their ability. Currently, the class was composed of 6 more students.
