Short Stories of The Realms

We Bear Responsibility

We Bear Responsibility

Mar 25, 2023

(Original characters and world. Blood, aftermath of war, death.)

He had been looking for hours, to find anyone, anything living in this town that he had gotten to far too late. Bodies riddled the streets and inside homes. It has been a pure massacre, barely a sign of anyone being able to fight back. Now that he was here he had one mission; To find the Chief and his family. He drew around a corner spotting a fallen Ifero soldier right outside of a small house. He quickly drew his sword and raced inside. He threw open doors, cabinets, anywhere a single person could hide. He found nothing downstairs and went upstairs quickly spotting another fallen soldier, just before a closed door, a sword embedded into it through both sides. Blood leaked out from beneath. He approached quietly and slowly opened the door, nudging a body to the side. He quickly dropped down immediately, recognizing the clothes of the Chief. He cursed, the other two had to be around here somewhere. A closed closet quickly caught his attention.
"Yulan? Anei? It's Reyahn." He announced.
The doorknob of the closest jangled as if someone was trying to open it but then stopped. He rushed to the door, throwing it open. It was Yelan, a hand pressed to her bloody abdomen and the other hidden to the side. Her short light brown hair left messy and knotted. She had a curvy figure hidden underneath her current loose cotton nightgown, one she loved to flaunt within the restrictions of their faith during parties between the nations. Her deep green eyes were tired and defeated. The gold spiral that cut through them the only light left.
"Yelan," The king breathed out, pulling her into a gentle hug, "I was too late," He shook his head, "Anei, where is he?"
She nodded back before shifting slightly, trying to gesture something, "He.. He's right here.." Blood dripped from her lips.
"Alright let me heal you first," the King brought up a hand before she shook her head then lifted her hand.
An inky black coated the wound and her hand, "It'll," She paused as she heaved out a breath, "Take too much, help Anei first." Almost every word contained a stutter.
His excitement faltered, if Anei was in just as bad condition he'd be able to save one of them. He stood before leaning over her, taking in the sight of the small boy next to her. His pale blonde hair, similar to his father's, stuck to his forehead with sweat. His right leg was bent at an unnatural angle, his black eyes unfocused with only pinpricks of light present in them, wheezing breaths left him. Both arms lay by his side. Blood coated his abdomen.
Reyahn took a shuddering breath, "Give him to me."
Yelan struggled to pick up the child but eventually he was delivered into his arms. Anei had always been small and weak for his age, he had been born extremely early and barely scraped past infant-hood alive.
Reyahn looked over at Yelan, "I can only help one of you, there's no one left."
He watched as tears spilled over her cheeks, "Not a single one of us?" It was less of a question than a realization as she looked up to her lone child, "I'm sorry Anei." She took a shuddering breath, before giving Reyahn a determined look and nodding.
Reyahn smiled sorrowfully before taking her hand and beginning. A soft glow emitted from his hands as he used what little was left of Yelan's magic to knit together Anei's guts and the skin over top. His hand flew away from Yelan's to clap over Anei's mouth before he had enough time to scream. He jerked and struggled as he looked up and Reyahn with large glazed over eyes. Yelan's coughing brought him out of his focus as he finally finished healing Anei's abdomen. He gently laid the now much calmer child in her arms so she could cradle him in her arms as Reyahn reset his broken leg. She spoke softly to him as he shook his head weakly. She snuck a hand behind him before covering his mouth and pinching his nose shut she closed her eyes as she held him down. Reyahn quickly snapped the leg back into position before he used what was left of Yelan to heal it as best as he could.
Both mother and son went limp. One with the coldness of death and the other with the exhaustion of life. He took the child gently in his arms careful not to jostle him.
