Well, the Middle Ages, even with magic, is the usual Middle Ages with its constant clashes, redistribution of territories, internecine wars, and dynastic marriages. I did not find anything more than new or extraordinary in the books. And yes, apart from people, there were no other types of intelligent beings in this world. True, this did not prevent the latter from constantly quarreling with each other with or without reason. And that made me very sad. And all because I never, even hypothetically, dreamed of moving into the past. And here it is not even in medicine that the matter is technological backwardness, although they also play an important role, but in instability and uncertainty about the future. Today you are doing well, you rejoice at the sun and a calm day, the happy smiles of your kids and proudly watch how your harvest ripens, the very next day some barbarian with an ax or a warrior with a sword came and took everything away. And it is good if at the same time everyone remained alive and free. But most often the elderly and very young children were killed, and the young and strong were sold into slavery. So, as for me, living in the past is like sitting on a powder keg, a so-so perspective. And yes, the strongest kingdoms here were considered those where there was the largest number of families gifted with strong magic. The only good thing was that in fact there were not as many of them as one might think. After all, ordinary people had little to oppose the gifted and were almost always lost to them. But all this did not cancel the constant small skirmishes that took place on the borders, which often led to full-scale military conflicts. Here, for example, is one of the cases that occurred a little over thirty years ago and is still ongoing. It flooded the Gualesh Lowland with water, which, for the next few years, stood there almost all year round. Unless the earth dried up by autumn, but this was of no use to Febrar, the owner. People did not settle there, the land was not cultivated, and the tax to the treasury must be paid every year. And so the landowner hired a magician to make a drainage system. But the problem turned out to be that for this it was necessary to change the course of a small river that flowed through the territory of a neighbor. A neighbor, Akerash, completely refused any changes, since every spring there was an excellent spawning of fish, bringing him a considerable income. A change in the course of the river may lead to the fact that he will be left without these cash infusions. Which did not suit him at all. And no promises and promises helped, since there was no absolute guarantee that nothing would change for him. All this bickering lasted for several years, after which Akerashi offered to buy the flooded lowland from the Febrars. And it seems that now everyone should be happy, but it was not so. Having bought the land at a very low price, Akerashi put up a small dam and made a backwater, after which the water left the lowland. Moreover, those lands saturated with silt became very fertile and incredibly rose in price, since the crops harvested on them were quite plentiful and rich. but it was not there. Seeing all this, the Febrars demanded either to return the land to them for the amount that they gave or to pay in addition at the current cost. It is clear that no one did this. Because of this, between these two families, not only enmity began, but almost military operations, with challenges to a duel, constant scandals, raids, and devastation of lands. It lasted a little over twenty years and ended with a wedding, which the rulers of the two states themselves insisted on.
Since Febrars were subjects of Artia, and Akerashi were subjects of Tavia, and both landowners constantly complained about each other to their overlords, a conflict already arose between the kingdoms. So the rulers decided it in such a cardinal way, by entering into a marriage between the warring clans. And it seems that everyone should continue to live peacefully and happily, but the only son of Febrars unsuccessfully falls from his horse and dies. After that, the entire inheritance goes to his sister, who was given in marriage to the son of Akerasha and became, after marriage, a subject of Tavia. And this means that the territory inherited by her passes to her husband and is now considered the lands of Tavia, which the Artians did not like at all. And yes, apparently, this conflict may soon turn into full-scale military operations. And there were many such stories.
By the way, the state in which I ended up was just Tavia. For one and a half thousand years, one dynasty ruled here, possessing air tribal magic. The kingdom was located on the northeastern part of a rather large, central mainland. There were three in total. Although, I admit that there could have been more, there were only three discovered and mapped on the world map, plus several islands and archipelagos. The rulers of Tavia managed to keep the borders of their territories, first of all, due to the favorable location of the kingdom. Namely, on the one hand, it was washed by the cold and inhospitable northern seas, rich in fish. On the other side rose impregnable mountains, behind which stretched the ocean. So at least from the north and east, there have never been attacks on the kingdom.
The Sintari Mountains, in which the Durshars castle stood, were just the extreme border point of Tavia. Thanks to the latter, people living here were not particularly afraid of attacks or military conflicts. But that didn't make life easier for them. The rocky soil of the mountain range did not particularly please those who dared to settle here either with flora, fauna, or rich harvests. Plus, the remoteness of trade routes and large cities (there is nothing to say about the capital) made these territories almost deserted. There are few who want to live on the outskirts of the world. That's just for me at the moment it's more a plus than a minus. There is an opportunity and time to calmly, without haste, deal with the situation in which she has fallen. If I woke up in a largely populated city among those who knew the owner of this body well, then everything could have turned out much worse. Even if you pretend you don't remember anything some elementary skills always remain with a person. Namely, the intonation of the voice, gait, shaking or tilting the head during a conversation, or the same smile. Yes, a lot.
But the last moment is very interesting. I wouldn't say that I know many people who have lost their memory, but even the media and TV coverage have shown that people who find themselves in such an unusual situation do not return emotionally and mentally to the level of young children or newborns. They are rather confused, while they can speak and even read. They can walk, eat and drink. They serve themselves quite calmly and think rationally. Their whole problem is that they do not recognize anyone, and also do not remember anything about themselves. How does it come out? Here I don't know. But the main thing is not this, but the fact that all this plays into my hands. The first few pages of the book were difficult for me. I even stopped and took small breaks. But after a few hours, my reading skill was fully restored. Most likely, the girl could read and read well. Otherwise, I doubt that I would have succeeded.
I always loved to learn new information, so on the very first day I sat up with a book until the middle of the night, which is why I overslept for breakfast. And by lunchtime, the first set of clothes had already been brought to me. To call all this just a suit, I would not turn my tongue. But it doesn't matter. The main thing was that I could finally leave the room, which I immediately took advantage of, as I already felt good and full of strength. It's just that the process of dressing was somewhat delayed.
It all started with the fact that I put my hair in a neat low bun, and then off we go. To begin with, I was dressed in a knee-length shirt with straps. Behind her, they put on stockings, knitted from something very reminiscent of light-colored cotton. They were tied with ribbons above the knee so that they would not slip down. By the way, I have already noticed that no matter how bright things are, they were far from snow-white. It was more of a light beige.
The stockings were followed by knickers just below the knee, with a slight ruffle. On top of all this, they put on a tight shirt, ankle-length, tied at the neck, and with long sleeves. A starched, wide petticoat was worn over the latter, about five centimeters short of the floor. It was all the same light beige shade. But then there were already colored clothes of rich blue color. The first thing I did was put my hands into something like a vest, but they put it on me back to front. He was not on the buttons, but on the side ties. As an ornament, they tied a black, recumbent collar around my neck. Then there was a floor-length skirt. It was adjusted around the waist with a belt. And the last layer was a single-breasted jacket to the middle of the thigh, with puffed sleeves, beautiful silver buttons, and piping, the sleeves ended with black cuffs. Well, what can I say in a way, I reminded myself of a cabbage. The only thing that pleased everyone about this was the absence of a corset. Otherwise, it would be neither to breathe or exhale, and it would be difficult to take a step. By the way, about the last one. Now you have to hold on all the time to a hard, rustling skirt with every movement, so as not to fall.
There was no question of putting on shoes on your own in all this. So Ulya put me in brown leather boots. And even though they were a little big, with the help of three straps tightened along the leg, they sat down pretty well.
And now I'm ready to go. At least that's what I thought, but it wasn't. As soon as I went to the door, Ulya stopped me.
- Lea, wait for me a minute. I will dress quickly to accompany you.
In confirmation of her words, the girl rushed headlong to the door. Watching her run easily, I envied her a little. Apparently, she had much fewer clothes on than me, which is why it was easier for her to move. But as they say, there is nothing to climbing into someone else's monastery with your charter. Perhaps, over time, I will either get used to being a cabbage in a hundred clothes, or I will be able to change something. But for now, it’s not worth it to be especially indignant and twitch. And if so, then I should practice walking in all this splendor.
As promised, Ulya returned quickly, but she did not allow me to leave the room without gloves and a hat, and she also had two raincoats in her hands, one of which, with a thin fur lining, was intended for me.
