“It is past the midnight hour...” Ethel grimaced, walking up to the door as the loud thumps continued.

Six burly men in armour and bearing the king’s colours barged into the smithy, pushing her aside even as she opened the door.

All of them reeked of cheap ale and sported bloodshot eyes.

“What is the meaning of this?” Ethel leapt between the men and Genève. “Get out at once.”

“Stand aside, blacksmith.” The one with a captain’s band growled. “We are here on King Rodolfo’s orders... to bring him every eligible young woman in the kingdom.”
