As I stood motionless in the rain, I could only watch as the series of explosions grew ever closer and as the people around me became more and more frantic, screaming louder and louder, trying desperately to get away with their lives and see the ones they love again. But for every person that bumped into me, my thoughts only scrambled more. What should I do? Should I run away? But why? nobody is waiting for me. no one will be glad that I return safe and sound.
"Should I save my useless self? what good would that bring?" I asked myself before suddenly losing my balance as someone corpulent rammed into me making me fall to my knees in the water. I was then forced to lie flat on my stomach as more and more people kept stepping on me as they ran from the blasts that were slowly making their way here and soon enough I became trapped under the stomping masses, slowly losing all hope of ever getting back up.
But just as I was about to give up, I heard a strangled scream and a large object land in the puddle next to me. I slowly opened my eyes to see what had made such a sound and to my surprise, it was a young woman. She looked like she could be my age, she had fallen on her side rather harshly and was now covering her neck with her hand in an attempt to protect herself. Maybe it was fate, maybe it was a coincidence or maybe she was just lucky but our eyes met and when she saw that I was there she looked at me with all that fear in her eyes and mouthed two words that I understood immediately, Help Me. She then looked at her body to signal me something and I saw it, she was pregnant.
It was like a switch turned on in my head, If I was to die today, I would give my life to someone who hasn't lived yet. Mustering the remnant of my strength, I pushed myself onto my elbows and my knees before slowly crawling to the woman and every little inch that I made forward led to at least three hits in every part of my body. When I managed to get to the terrified woman, my entire being was hurt. Blood ran in my eyes, at least four of my fingers were broken and my ribs felt like white-hot pokers jammed in my abdomen.
"Can you crawl?" I managed to ask between two coughs.
She could only nod her head as she tried to protect her rounded belly from the mayhem around us. I then placed myself between the incoming crowd and her to let her get into a crawling position and when she gave me the signal we slowly made our way toward the wall closest to our position.
The detonations were now deafening and it would not be long before we suffer the same fate. A few trudges later we arrived at a nearby alleyway where we could finally breathe free of the mass of feet trying to stomp our faces into the ground. I tried to take a big breath but clearly one of my ribs had pierced my lung because a torrent of bile and blood came pouring out and I could only fall back to my knees until it passed.
"We need to leave, quick!" a female voice hurried me to do while grabbing my arm before letting out a concerned gasp at the view of what had just come out of me.
I looked up at her and started, "It's to late to..." before getting cut off by a detonation that shook my entire being and forced me to cover my ears even if it didn't change much except making my ribs hurt more.
"We need somewhere to hide, we can't run anymore." I finished when the noise finally died down. I then pointed at a big trash bin.
The pregnant woman looked at me with concern and only then did I see that her shoulder was bleeding from the fall that she had made. "Okay, I will trust you," she said while helping me up. We then started to turn the luckily empty trash bin upside down to close it over ourselves before the explosion happens.
I quickly realized however that we would never be strong enough to close the bin from the inside, even if we were to try we would both die in the blast with the lid still open. So I waited until the woman was inside and when she looked into my eyes for the last time, she understood my intentions too late to stop me and with one last pull I closed the lid, saving her life and condemning me to my end.
With one last effort, I sat next to the trash bin and I felt my energy leaving me. The girl was still banging on the walls of her safe spot. begging me to come back in, to try and lift it, but it was too late, I had made my choice
But just before the explosion, The pregnant girl in the trash bin said something so familiar that I had not heard in years, "Blake you asshole! Stop being stupid!" Before I could make heads or tails off this familiar sentence a man sporting a red shirt with a black sun on it appeared in front of the alley, then everything went white then black...
