The next day.
After visiting the cafeteria for a morning lunch (toasts and a yerba mate, Juablo ate two portions), class A-1 and class B-1 headed towards the forest. After walking down the stairs, which were just outside of the main hall and marching down a path, the two classes quickly found themselves near the forest entrance.
"You know, I thought the C and D classes would be coming too," Fabio said.
"Well, it's just us, then. I mean. Two teachers and twenty students." Mari added, turning around, stopping, and looking at all of them.
Lievpad was looking around, before eventually spotting Kohei in the lump of people. He walked forwards, stopping, as the two looked each other in the eye.
"The things you said to me, Lievpad. Were they just a lie, if you're in this school after all?" asked Kohei.
"It was a late awakening," said Lievpad. Juablo looked at the two from a distance. "If you really cared, you would've asked earlier," he muttered, quietly.
"Lievpad, I'm worried, if you did anything-"
"It's okay." Lievpad immediately stopped him.
Kohei scratched the back of his head. "You know... I've always been counting on you. I wanted you to see that we've always been equal, even if you thought otherwise."
"Then, I'll be waiting. I'll wait for the day when both of us are ready, and then I'll beat you. Two Singularities against each other."
"Huh?"
"I'm doing this to prove myself."
"Okay, okay, everybody!" Mari raised his voice, half-enthusiastically. "We're going now! Please don't accidentally forget what class you're in, you're not my responsibility, class B. Focus on that hopeless flirt. Anyway, let's go." he turned around, as everybody started marching.
The two teachers kept a distance from the students.
"We're gonna go see the dog," Mari added.
"Huh," responded Fabio.
"Milagro said it was important to show them that not only humans can have Singularities. It's a part of nature at this point. Some creatures on this earth are just different from others, and we should learn to accept it."
"Heh, Mari? About yesterday... I'm really sorry for my reaction."
"At least you didn't call me Maria this time," smirked Mari.
"But you're just so cute and-"
Mari kicked Fabio's leg, as he fell over.
After taking a turn, a loud groan could be heard.
"WHAT WAS THAT?!" someone yelled.
"My stomach. Haha, just kidding." Mari said, smiling a bit. "Before we take the next turn, I need you to all calm down and think rationally. Just because it's not like you, doesn't mean it's an enemy, okay? You're not permitted to use your Singularities here."
With the new law SYSTA created, Singularities can't be used in public spaces, as they could easily create harm. The Erra school is one of the few places where Singularities can be used either in Singularity focused classes or in the outside area, however, teachers can make exceptions to these rules.
"Phew, okay." Mari walked, as everyone followed him. At that moment, a massive creature could be seen, standing in the middle of the path of the forest.
"AAAA!" Someone yelled.
The creature showed its teeth, growling.
"IT'S GONNA KILL US ALL!" Fabio yelled, hiding behind Mari.
"Huh?!" Mari raised an eyebrow. "Seriously... clearly cruel!" he thought, as he put his arms out. "Calm, down!" he raised his voice, as strings surrounded his arms, extending from his fingertips and shooting at the creature's body, wrapping around quickly. Mari pushed down on the string between his index and middle fingers, as the grip tightened around the creature. "Calm... down," he repeated, albeit more quietly.
"The teacher's Singularity..!" Lievpad thought, watching from the distance.
The creature slowly shrank, and with a poof of air, it turned into a golden retriever dog.
"Hah..." Mari breathed out, rubbing the sweat off his forehead and adjusting his glasses. "Fabio, really?"
"It's just so scary..." he muttered.
"Are you really fit for this job?" asked Mari, grinding his teeth.
The dog ran to the students, happily.
"Ooh! Aren't you a cute doggie doggie doggie?" Paula asked, teasingly, rubbing the dog's cheeks.
"Not so scary now, huh?" asked Juablo. "It looked like your soul left your body when you first saw it!" he laughed.
"I will hurt you," muttered Paula, quietly.
"HUH?!" Juablo raised his voice.
"What is its name?" asked Lievpad, who stood nearby, looking at the dog.
"Calm."
"Aaaaaah." Lievpad sighed, petting the dog's forehead. "Aren't you a fun little dog?"
"So... it has a Singularity?" asked Leira.
"So cool!" Ben raised his voice.
"Singularities are natural at this point. It means that they might as well appear in trees, bushes, grass and all animals. We shouldn't be scared of them. Calm is just a golden retriever, that transfers into a bigger, different coloured version of itself at random intervals." explained Mari. "Right, please take Calm on a walk through the forest now, he really likes it."
The students agreed instantly, as every one of them scurried around the woods.
Mari sat on a rock, as Fabio sat nearby, moving closer.
"Too close," Mari said, as Fabio moved a bit.
"This would've been much more interesting if I just didn't straight up admit that you're cute!" added Fabio. "You know, like when in... shows... people have crushes on each other and..." he rubbed his head. "Heh~"
"What are you, a girl in middle school?" asked Mari, smirking.
"I'M SORRY!" Fabio yelled, covering his head.
"It's funny for now, just don't get too comfortable," added Mari. "We're teachers after all. Our primary goal should be to focus on our students. If you're gonna go haywire each time you see me, I don't know how you expect to get paid."
"Phew." Fabio breathed out. "But I'm calm whenever I look at you."
All of a sudden, a string appeared around Fabio's mouth, shutting it.
"So you're like a plant?" asked Paula, standing near Leira, who sat near a pond.
"Um, yeah..." responded Leira, scratching her chin. "There's also the sound aspect..." Leira extended her arm, as her fingers changed into small branches of flowers, which grew at the place where her fingertips were. "You don't think it's weird?"
"Hah, wait 'till you see my Singularity-" Paula added, as someone stepped in.
"What are you two doing?" a boy, with grey hair and serious eyebags walked in.
"Just... playing with the water?" responded Leira.
"Aww... so cute." the guy said. "VERY CUTE, HUH! While you were playing with the water in the pond, I was calling the right people to give this poor dog fine grooming! Did you see what state he was in? You would never think about that, you poor people!"
"Who are you calling poor?" Leira stood up.
"You two! Any rich person would always think about making the best world for their pupils! When you lack money, you lack brains! Ha!" he smiled.
"Maybe the dog is happier the way it is?" asked Leira.
"You're now thinking about this because I called you poor, otherwise, this would've never crossed your minds! Sorry, sorry, I can already see which people in this school are elite and which are only peasants that I should-"
All of a sudden, the guy fell to the ground, and the sound of a punch could be heard.
"Neil, come on!" said Kohei, standing from behind. "Rich pumps like you. I'm so sorry for him!" Kohei bowed, dragging Neil's unconscious body to the ground.
"Huh... that was a bit brutal..."
"Incroyable!" said Paula, in french, as her eyes lit up.
"Hm?" Leira turned over.
Later that day, Milagro was in the school's library, walking around. He sat down, with a book in his hand. All of a sudden, the door to the library swung open.
"Huh?" Milagro looked up. "...and you are?"
"Mmm..." the boy with the dark purple hair and a small moustache looked at him. "Rico Kirchner, class A-1."
Milagro smiled a bit.
"I wish someone told me there was a library here earlier. Trying to find this goddamn place was one hell of a task!" he added. "Well, I just wanna read," he added.
"It's okay, don't worry. I'm usually in charge of this place, I just thought that someone from class A-1 would rather spend their free time on doing stuff with their Singularity, rather than reading books."
"I-I'm a person of many hobbies, Mr Milagro!" added Rico, putting his hand on his chest, proudly. "And... looking at the amounts of books in here and the fact that practically no one else visits... I might just make this my favourite place at this school." he walked over to one of the bookshelves, looking up.
Milagro stood up, stepping towards him.
"Your favourite book?" asked Milagro.
"Probably... The Drowned World by JG Ballard and The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris."
"I've read those two. Really interesting choices."
"Thank you..." Rico looked away.
"Well, not gonna interrupt you anymore." Milagro walked away, turning for a moment and winking. "Have fun reading."
Time passed by fast, as yet another day was nothing but pulling the strings so that everything would work out in the end. Much of the first week at the academy was just one-off, short classes with simple activities, or at times, there were days where nothing happened, and the students were left with free time to explore the school or put time into their hobbies.
"What are you wearing today?" asked Lievpad, looking at Juablo, as the two walked through a hall.
"It's a custom blazer, amigo! Do you like it..?" asked Juablo.
Lievpad remained silent.
"Lievpad? Please..?" Juablo got closer.
"My grandpa told me to keep quiet in situations like these since I always tell the truth," Lievpad stated.
"Huh?!"
"So you can modify your uniforms, huh?" asked Lievpad.
"Y-Yeah, I ordered this design a month before the school year. What about yours?"
"I did not. I would not since I hate wearing too many clothes."
"Alright, got that, pal."
The two walked through an open door, and they found themselves on what looked like a bridge, inside the school building. Juablo looked down, seeing nothing but darkness.
"Huh?" Juablo was confused. "Oi..." he glanced around, as the walls in this place were made from rock, rather than bricks. "Lievpad, where are we?"
"Erra Singularity School."
"Not what I meant!" Juablo raised his voice. "This seems oddly dangerous to be placed in the school halls. What if someone just jumped over? What's under there?"
"No clue, but it really looks like there is no end to it." Lievpad also looked down.
"Oi, go on!" a voice could be heard from the door behind them. Juablo and Lievpad quickly turned, walking through and seeing the people around them.
"What's this?" asked Juablo.
"This is so cool!" Ben pointed. "You can get a free badge here if you manage to use your Singularity to get up on that platform!" Ben smiled. "I'm so excited to try!"
Lievpad looked up, and down. "A challenge, huh?" he looked at Juablo. "I can prove myself."
