Lievpad looked up, and down. "A challenge, huh?" he looked at Juablo. "I can prove myself."
"Care to explain the rules, Benny boy?" Juablo asked, smiling cutely.
"Of course!" Ben raised his voice. "You need to use your Singularity to get up from this platform, bouncing yourself from that wall and jumping onto the one above us."
"What if someone falls though, huh?" asked Juablo.
"There's water underneath, which would ease the fall, but from what I've seen no one has fallen yet! Aren't we all great students?" Ben turned, excited. "It's almost my turn too."
Lievpad stared forwards, clearly thinking about something.
"Huh. I wonder why they have budgets for things like these," Juablo muttered.
As another student went up the platform without making a show, Ben got ready, putting his arm to his side and breathing in. "Let's go!" he yelled before a flash of lightning was created beneath his palm. He moved forwards, and with a blink, he appeared on the opposite wall. He then looked up, and with a clap of his hands whilst airborne, he managed to fly up to the platform.
"Hah!" Ben stood up, looking over from above. "It's so cool! I believe in you guys!" he added.
"So it's all about finding a creative way to get up there, huh?" asked Juablo, cracking his knuckles. "Look at this, Amigo."
"Oh..." Lievpad opened his mouth, slightly shocked.
From behind Juablo's arms, two small dragons appeared, one looking like water, the other looking like fire. Juablo raised his hand, pointing at the platform above. The fire dragon shot forwards, biting the stone edge, as the water one followed, lifting Juablo upwards. For a moment, he found himself upside down, before turning around on his foot, swinging and standing on the platform.
"W-Wow!" Ben yelled, clenching his fists. "So flashy! So..."
"Cool." Juablo finished, winking.
Lievpad looked above, then at his hand, clenching his fist.
"Oh, you guys have made it." a teacher walked up to them.
"Who are you?" asked Juablo.
"I'm your P.E. teacher!" the guy yelled.
"Oh... we have P.E. at this school?" asked Juablo, frowning.
"P.E.! Yes! I love P.E.!" Ben jumped up.
"Oi, Lievpad! Are you gonna get up here or not?" Juablo's voice echoed. "We'll be waiting in the other room, okay?"
"Yes," Lievpad responded, before looking forwards again. "I haven't used my Singularity ever since that night. It just hadn't manifested beforehand. How could I become strong if I weren't able to overcome a simple challenge like this one?" he asked himself, before looking down and grinding his teeth.
The door behind opened, and a student came in, looking at Lievpad. They made eye contact. "Mm..." the student didn't say anything.
"People are going to come here. I can't just hold the line." Lievpad put his leg back, extending his arm. "It's like I'm not allowing leaves to grow. Scratch... that... itch." he thought, closing his eyes, as some of his hair started to get static. He breathed in and out, but couldn't catch onto a rhythm.
Another student came through the door. "Oh, Nivel. What's this about?" asked Rico.
"Wait. He's..."
Lievpad didn't hear their voices, at that moment. Then, he opened his eyes, as the ball rolled from his shoulder. "Scratch that itch!" he muttered, pointing down, as the orb flew from his forearm and hit the ground below, bouncing off and hitting Lievpad's stomach. The orb sent him flying towards the wall, bouncing off again and lifting him to the platform above, rolling on the ground for a little more, and then, disappearing.
Lievpad was covered in fresh wounds, and cuts and had a concussion. Despite all that, he still stood up. "I... did it."
Lievpad walked through the door, stopping the conversation between Juablo and Ben. "I... did it," he repeated, smiling, as blood dropped from his hand.
"Eh?!" Ben stood up. "Lievpad!"
"Ah, damn it!" The teacher ran up to him, as Lievpad was about to trip. "Oi, red hair. Get him to the medical bay."
"What the... Lievpad... how did this even happen?" Juablo asked, putting his hand around his shoulder. The teacher and Juablo escorted him to the other room.
"Why does it have to matter?" asked Lievpad, turning his head. "I still did it."
The three slowly walked through the building, mostly down a set of stairs and then through the halls.
"I ain't got a Singularity." the teacher spoke. "But those bastard things can hurt ya," he added.
"Was it because of that, Amigo?" Juablo asked, worryingly.
"Eh... you trust me, right?" Lievpad answered with a question.
"What do you mean?"
They made it to the medical bay, as Lievpad sat on one of the beds. He got bandaged up and had the nurse overlooking his damage, for about an hour.
Mari swung open the door to the med bay, rushing towards Lievpad. "What the hell..?" he spoke quietly. "How do these things happen to you on your 5th day here?"
Lievpad sat up, looking at Mari. "But I did it. I completed the challenge."
"The challenge doesn't matter, Lievpad! If you're going to hurt yourself, it's not worth it!"
Lievpad looked away.
"Admit your weakness, that's the first step to becoming more powerful," explained Mari, as Lievpad's eye lit up. "Look, I'm worried." Mari sat down next to him. "Singularities aren't just a toy to play around with. They come with great responsibility. Yours appeared... much later than any other. I don't expect you to catch up so soon. If you can't control its power, don't use it until you think that nothing bad will happen."
Lievpad covered his eyes for a moment. "But... how will I ever show it to him? How can I be strong like others? How long do I have to keep waiting."
Mari looked at him worryingly, before hugging him. "That's exactly why I'm here. Your determination to learn and better yourself... it shows me that you'll be stronger than anyone."
Mari moved back, looking at him once again, and nodding. Lievpad was shocked.
"I'll have to put off the Singularity test for another day, until all of us are ready to participate, including you. For that time, please don't use it. However, the coming lessons will show you that there are many more opportunities to explore with these powers." Mari said, walking to the door.
Lievpad glanced around his bed, as he noticed a badge, lying to his side. He picked it up, looked at it, and then peeked over at Mari, who smiled, before leaving.
Lievpad took his card out of his pocket and slowly put the badge on one of the empty spaces. The edges of the badge lit up, as he admired it for a moment, before putting the card back in its place. He put his knees close to his body, covering his mouth with his finger.
"Lievpad, promise me one thing. No matter how much you think of your new Singularity. Don't ever become someone like me."
"Grandpa..." Lievpad muttered as a tear rolled down his cheek. He quickly rubbed it off, grinding his teeth.
Mari breathed out, standing in front of the medical bay's door.
"Would dad be proud if he heard my words?" thought Mari, leaning against the door. "Becoming a teacher not for the money, not for the job, but to teach others about everything, no matter the form or fact. I wanted to be the same person as him, but I believe that right now I'm barely stepping out of that shadow." he breathed in, before stepping forwards and making a turn towards the staircase.
"Oh, Mari!" Fabio appeared.
"No!" Mari raised his voice, before running upstairs.
While normal subjects such as the boring math, the exhausting Spanish or the confusing and nonsensical English still didn't happen, the students attended other classes, such as this one, in which they learned something new.
"Each Singularity emits energy," said Mari, closing a book and walking through the class. "Energy, in general, is a very interesting concept, in my opinion. It describes strength, in the most logical way possible. But something like this is far from kinetic or electrical energy." Mari put his hand on his forehead.
"Ah. You get it, right? I don't wanna continue this boring speech. Why should we apply logic to things that are pretty much illogical? Itch in the brain, blabla." he put a massive book on one of the desks.
"Hello." Nivel looked up.
"Okay. You look like you get it. Put both of your hands on this book."
Nivel did so, but nothing happened. "Mm..." he muttered.
"Try using your Singularity, but don't think about causing any effect."
"Huh?" Nivel looked up. "But... how?"
"I really hate the scratching itch metaphor, but scratch that itch, and do only that, without thinking of doing anything else."
"Okay..." Nivel responded, breathing out. All of a sudden, his palms were surrounded by a pink aura, that shined brightly. "Wow..."
"This book is now filled with Singularity energy. In fact, each time you use your Singularity, it leaves an invisible trace of energy, that disappears over time," explained Mari. "Right now, Nivel left energy in this boring book that I will never read."
"It's not boring..." muttered Rico.
"It's 900 pages long. Of course, it's boring." Mari smirked.
"Hm." Rico looked away.
"Um... why do we need this?" Paula raised her hand.
"Singularity energy is the basis of all things you could consider Singularity. You can't make a cake without flour."
"I digress, there's always substitutes-" Juablo said, but Mari covered his mouth with his hand.
"Not the point I'm trying to make here. Singularity energy, except for being a basis, is also a variable, that can be used as an alternative power source, but it could only be activated with Singularities. These things are quite... otherworldly and illogical, yes. That kind of leaves some magic within." he pointed. "Nivel, open that book. Did anything change?"
"I mean... I've never read this."
"Oh yeah, I forgot it's boring."
"It's not!" Rico added.
"Yeah these words are... unreadable," admitted Nivel, squinting his eyes.
"Things change upon the usage of Singularity energy. It's essentially like spreading a magic powder." Mari took the book and closed it. "Someone else..?" he slowly turned his head towards a student which slept on the desk.
"Oi!" Mari slammed the desk.
"Woh! Wah! Woo!" the student shook his head, panicking, as the capuchin monkey climbed around its shoulders.
"Even Rejire there isn't sleeping." Mari pointed, as Rejire waved.
"I was listening! I swear! I swear!" Che raised his voice.
"Then, what can you do with this..?" Mari put a monkey plush on the desk, smiling a bit.
"Mmm..." Chogi closed his eyes for a moment, before slamming his head on the desk. "I'msorrythisisnthowitwassupposedtobeandimsuchamistakeandicouldntsleep!!!---"
"Wow... calm down." Mari stepped back.
"Itsjustthaticouldntfocusonsleepingbecausethemonkey-" Che suddenly looked at Leira, who had her finger raised.
"I learned this on the train," Leira commented. "It quickly calms him down."
"I'm sorry..." Che looked down.
"Did you think that telling lies was the right thing to do at this moment? I'm not mad, but this may be useful later." Mari walked through the class.
"Can I still inject energy when I can't use my Singularity?" asked Lievpad.
"Oh yeah. Just don't activate it." Mari said, putting the same plush on the desk.
"Don't worry. When I tried using it for the second time, it didn't manifest itself. I think I know how to handle it." Lievpad put both of his hands on the plush's sides.
"Anyone else wanna try?" Mari asked, taking a dozen objects out of his jacket.
