Memory of a Dream

Chapter 4 - New world

Chapter 4 - New world

Apr 13, 2023

Yoojin was not religious by any means. He believed that when someone dies, there is only nothingness because he couldn't fathom how it would be possible for heaven or hell to exist with so many people dying for so many millennia. He also couldn't understand the concept of reincarnation.

Despite this, he still celebrated Christian holidays because of his grandmother's beliefs. Christmas was his favorite holiday due to the festive atmosphere. Although he believed that there were no extraterrestrials or supernatural beings beyond humans or animals on this planet, he still got scared when strange things happened, and he couldn't rationally explain them.

But as he listened to his friend's words, Yoojin felt a shiver run down his spine. Suddenly, he had a brief vision of a shadowy silhouette lurking in a dark place, and he heard a voice that sounded like it was from the netherworld whispering, "I will find you, Yoojin Delaney..."

When he snapped out of the vision, he realized that he was sitting on a chair, and his eyes met Calisto's worried sapphire eyes. "Are you okay?" Calisto whispered, sounding afraid that Yoojin might back down.

Yoojin jumped in surprise as he saw movement out of the corner of his eye. He wasn't expecting to see the professor who handed him a cup of tea, from which a calming scent of chamomile was emanating. He accepted it, feeling the need to hold onto something.
Otherwise, he would have nervously picked at the dry skin on his lips until they bled.

Yoojin began to sip his tea, but it did little to calm his nerves. The professor then picked up his rucksack from the floor and pulled out the thinnest laptop Yoojin had ever seen. He sat down at his desk and sighed before turning on the device.

"Don't mind me," the professor said without turning around. "I just need to contact the Academy to inform them of what happened. Meanwhile, you can continue your discussion."
Calisto watched Yoojin closely, concern etched on his face. Yoojin took another sip of his tea, hoping it would help him relax. Although he still felt uneasy, he tried to calm down by taking a deep breath. After a while, he began to feel more at ease.

"Okay, I'm ready to hear more," Yoojin said, trying to sound more composed. "So you're saying that besides humans, there are other beings, right? And let me guess, you're not human?"
Calisto replied, "That's right. I'm what we call an Olympian, and Greek mythology is about our race."

As Calisto spoke, Yoojin felt like he was also talking about him. "Don't tell me that I'm also an Olympian." Yoojin half-jokingly said.

At that moment, the professor spoke again. "We are positive that you are Mr. Delaney. If you weren't, it would be impossible for you to board this train. What worries me greatly is the fog that you described before and also your nightmare. Could you tell me more about your nightmare?"

Yoojin explained that he couldn't remember anything from his nightmare apart from what he felt inside it. "Besides... When Calisto told me that there were other beings apart from humans, I had something like a vision where there was a shadow in a dark place and a voice telling me that they would find me. I think it was a flashback from my nightmare because I felt the same as when I woke up."

"Mr. Delaney, I think that you could be in danger," the professor said.

"What do you mean, professor?" Yoojin asked, feeling his heart rate increase.

"It's only a theory, but something could be trying to contact you using an ability called 'Dream Telepathy'. Someone probably knows that you are also an Olympian and is trying to eliminate you. What do you know about Greek mythology?" asked the professor.

"I read the Odyssey for homework, and while I can't say I really enjoyed it, the film 'Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief' sparked my interest in earlier myths and the stories of the deities," Yoojin said.

The professor nodded. "Okay, I won't need to explain everything from the beginning. So, long story short, we Olympians are considered the gods of the human race. We created this solar system," he continued, his tone serious.

Yoojin was speechless. His mind was swirling with countless thoughts and questions. He struggled to believe what he was hearing, as it was a complete change in his understanding of the world. However, his friend's serious expression and the events of the past 24 hours made him reconsider everything he had previously believed.

"The Olympians live on another plane, you could say in another dimension. One day, a research group decided to experiment by recreating a solar system similar to the Olympians'. From there, they studied how life developed, and it was found out that Earth has developed similarly to our Earth. Humans are really similar to Olympians, without powers since this solar system lacks some elements that could give powers to humans, but that made a part of animals and nature develop in a different way than here. When humans began to build cities, our nobility established themselves within them. That's how myths and polytheistic religions were created."

The professor paused for a moment before continuing. "There were some Olympians that decided to try to reproduce with humans to see what would happen. From that type of union, hybrids were born, and it was discovered that their children would not have powers. Even if the hybrid continued to reproduce with other Olympians, the offspring would not have any power. But when the lineage has reproduced 100 times with Olympians without any human blood in between, they will develop the same powers as Olympians."

Yoojin listened intently, trying to make sense of it all. It was a lot to take in. "But why are the Olympians hidden now?" he asked.

The professor smiled. "That's because the human race became afraid and jealous of Olympians, and they wanted control. And because there were some impostors that created what are called sects today, which made many think badly about polytheistic religions and tainted our image. That's how monotheistic religions were born. So our nobility left some of their hybrids to lead the humans, and they left them to their own devices. Obviously, we Olympians didn't completely leave this plane since we have built our houses around this planet, and we even built Academies on untraceable islands."

Yoojin's mind was racing with questions. "So, are there any hybrids left among us?" he asked, curious.

The professor nodded. "Yes, there are still some Olympians that have children with humans, and there are descendants. But most have forgotten all about us. They are carefully monitored by the Olympians to see if they develop any powers or not. But they usually possess some physical traits that are different from humans, which are often mistaken for genetic mutations or anomalies. Those who still remember are monitored to ensure that they do not reveal the existence of the Olympians to humans. And if they do, that it will not be believable."

Yoojin couldn't help but wonder if he knew any hybrids. "Is there any way to tell if someone is a hybrid?" he asked.

The professor thought for a moment before answering. "There is a way, but it's not foolproof. Hybrids have a unique energy signature that can be detected by other Olympians. But it's not something that can be easily done. It requires a lot of training and practice."

Yoojin was fascinated by all of this. "What about the Olympians themselves? Do they ever interact with humans?"

The professor shook his head. "No, they don't. They prefer to keep to themselves and observe from a distance. They don't want to interfere with human affairs unless it's absolutely necessary. Not even with their offspring or descendants."

Yoojin's mind was racing with so many other questions. "What kind of powers do the Olympians have? Can they control the elements or fly?"

The professor chuckled. "Well, some Olympians do have elemental powers, but not all of us. We have a wide range of abilities, from telekinesis to mind reading to shape-shifting. As for flying, we have our own means of transportation."

Yoojin was stunned. He had always felt like he was different, but he never imagined that he could be part of something so extraordinary. He looked at the professor and nodded. "I want to learn more."

Calisto smiled and took Yoojin's hands in his, excitement visible in his eyes. "Then I'm sure that you could attend Celestial Academy with me. It could protect you."

"Yes, Mister de Navarra is quite right. You really need training, and we could help you find other family members that are Olympians. By the way, there is a noble family that has your same surname, and that is Baron Aran Delaney of Rye and his wife, Baroness Aoife. Does it ring any bell?" the professor continued.

"No, I don't know them. I only have three family members - my grandmother, my mother, and my father. My grandmother, Shashi Delaney, has never known her father, who gave her his surname, because he supposedly disappeared. She had my mother, Lana Delaney, who took my grandmother's surname since my grandfather eloped with his mistress. My mother had married my father, who was disowned by his family because he wouldn't marry a woman that they had chosen. From what I know, my mother and grandmother couldn't be Olympians, but I don't know anything about my father because he also disappeared."

Yoojin's mind raced with thoughts of his family history. He had always felt like there was something missing, and now he couldn't help but wonder if his father's disappearance was related to his potential Olympian heritage. "My mother was too distraught to raise me, so she left me in the care of my grandmother when I was three years old. I only saw her once every year when she came to visit with her current husband since she often changed them."

"Your grandmother could be Baron Delaney's illegitimate child. When we arrive at the Academy, we could contact him to do a test to see if you are related to him, and he could sponsor you. You could even live in their Manor if you are accepted by his wife, right, professor?" Calisto turned to the professor, who acquiesced and continued. "It is also possible that you became an Olympian after being the 100th of the lineage since you said that your great-grandfather, grandfather, and father all disappeared for a reason or another, making me think that they were Olympians."

Then Yoojin saw his friend wince. "And... there is another thing that you need to know about Olympians."

"Ahem... yes, so,... you know that humans have two genders, male and female, but the Olympians have sub-genres, alpha, beta, and omega," the professor explained, scratching the back of his neck.

"Is it like in the novels with omegaverse?" Yoojin wondered.

Both the professor and Calisto looked at him surprised. The latter opened his mouth to say something, but they were interrupted by a chime.

"Dear students and professors, we are approaching our destination. In 15 minutes, we will enter the central station of Genoa," the announcement interrupted their conversation.
Yoojin was perplexed and checked his phone to see what time it was. He realized that the journey only lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes, which was much faster than a normal train. He couldn't believe it.

"We will continue this discussion later, Mr. de Navarra. You should go back to your carriage, take your things, and come back here," the professor instructed. Calisto nodded before turning to Yoojin.

"Say, do you want to come with me?" Yoojin nodded and followed his best friend outside. They crossed the professor's carriage and met Jaein and a tall, well-built guy with brown hair and sapphire eyes that reminded him of Calisto.

"Brother, what are you doing here?" Calisto asked, perplexed.

"Obviously, when I came to see you in your carriage, your classmates told me you were called to the professor's carriage, so I was worried for you. Then I met Miss Kwon, and she told me what happened, so I decided to bring you your belongings," the guy explained. He turned towards Yoojin and smiled, holding out his hand. "Nice to meet you, I'm Lucas d'Aquitaine, this cutie's older brother. Are you the famous Yoojin Delaney that I always hear about but that I'm not allowed to meet because I will surely snatch away?"

Yoojin was perplexed but smiled and shook his hand. "That's right, the one and only, fortunately," he answered jokingly.

Calisto came in between and dragged Yoojin back to the professor's Fiordivita's compartment, followed by amused Jaein and Lucas, who had a fond look.

In the compartment, the professor was finishing tidying up and putting away his books and laptop when everyone came inside. The professor was taken aback. "You were really quick... ah, I see that Mr. d'Aquitaine and Miss Kwon are with you," he said.

"Professor, we would like to ask permission for us to stay with my brother and his friend until the situation is settled," Lucas asked.

"I can't see why not," the professor answered. "Ah, before I forget, I have something for you, Mr. Delaney." The professor searched inside one of his luggage and took out something that looked like a choker, which he gave to Yoojin. "You should put this on. We Olympians present ourselves during the year of our 18th birthday, and if you are the same age as Mr. de Navarra, it will be this year. Alphas and omegas emit pheromones, and even the unpresented give off some lightly. From what I can smell, you will definitely be an omega. The rest of this conversation will be continued later when we arrive at the Academy," the professor ended as the train slowly came to a stop.
