Jax had jinxed himself really well this time. That won’t happen, his ass. It did happen. Logan was absent. It was already the middle of fourth period, which meant that he likely wasn’t out for just the morning. Of course, his luck was this horrible.
Jax did find it strange that in the short time he had known Logan, the boy had seemed to miss a lot of school. Maybe he gets sick easily. Maybe he has some kind of hospital treatment he needs. Maybe he’s an alien and he needs to return to his home planet every week to recharge his energy.
Okay, that last one was a tiny bit outlandish. Or, rather, outworldish. But Jax was curious. Why had Logan missed so much school?
Yet Jax was not one to pry for information that others might not feel comfortable giving to him. Besides, the person he would need to glean said information from was nowhere to be found. It was impossible for him to ask.
So he went on with his day, leaving the question in the back of his mind to be reviewed at a later time.
Jax had not, in fact, double-jinxed himself. That he was grateful for. Logan was at school again, and his previous question had resurfaced to the front of his mind. But Jax had priorities and said priorities meant that he had to reconcile with Logan first.
He leaned over and tapped Logan on the shoulder with a pencil. He didn’t miss the way the other boy froze before turning to look at him.
“Hey,” he said quietly. Now that he was actually speaking to Logan, he was at a loss for words.
He swallowed down the lump in his throat and continued on, fumbling through his words. “Listen, I— uh. I’m very sorry. You know, for the way I treated you the other day. I mean, on the roof. And the other day, too, but— Ugh, I’m just sorry, alright? I never should have assumed that you had been lying to me. I don’t think you’re the type of person to do that. I don’t know why I ever thought that. And the other day, that too. I realise that I turned away like I was still avoiding you. I wasn’t even thinking about it and I was just so ashamed that I couldn’t look at you and I realise how it looked and I’m sorry for that. If you can forgive me, then—.”
Jax had been so caught up in his rambling that he hadn’t realised when Logan had started to sign. Thus, the other boy tapped him twice and restarted his movements, this time with Jax’s eyes fixed on his hands.
“It’s fine. I shouldn’t have assumed that you still wanted nothing to do with me. I should have waited for you to say something. And yeah, that was a dick move on the roof. Don’t pull something like that again, alright? If you do, it’ll be the last you hear from me. Got it?”
Jax nodded mutely. He had honestly expected Logan to ignore him for a day or two, give him a taste of his own medicine. And he couldn’t say that he wouldn’t deserve it if that was what Logan decided.
But he had settled on simply accepting Jax’s apology and giving him a second chance. Sure, it was unanticipated, but Jax would take that any day over the alternative.
“So,” he started, moving his head to rest his cheek on his palm. He propped his elbow up on his desk. “Riddle me this.”
He was about to ask about Logan’s absences, but then a thought popped into his mind. He had only just managed to get Logan to forgive him. What if he felt uncomfortable with the question and went back to being angry with him? Jax didn’t want to fuck up so soon after he had been forgiven. Thus, he changed his question.
“Do you need the homework for any classes? I know we’re in different maths classes, but English, science, and obviously history should be the same.”
Logan hummed thoughtfully in response, only moving his hands to sign after a moment of deliberation. “I’ve got the English homework. I do need the history work, but I think we’re in different science classes. I’m in physics.”
“Oh. Yeah. I’m not in physics. Nowhere near smart enough for that. But I can get you the history homework for sure,” he offered.
He was given a grin in response. “I’d like that,” Logan signed.
For some reason, the comment made Jax’s face flush slightly. “Y-yeah? I grabbed an extra copy for you yesterday, so here,” he said, extracting a paper from his bag and passing it to Logan.
Logan raised an eyebrow at him, a light smirk dancing across his features. “Oooh, you thought of me yesterday? I’m flattered, good sir.”
Jax’s face heated up even more at that comment, pink dusted across his cheeks. He coughed into his hands once. “Well, I, uh. Your absence was pretty obvious during history since you sit next to me,” he attempted to reason. He was sure he looked like an idiot at the moment, face flushed red as he stumbled over his words.
Logan simply smirked back at him, playfully slapping him on the shoulder. “Woah there. Don’t catch a fever now.”
Jax glared at Logan, feigning exasperation. “A fever? Seriously?”
Logan’s shoulder trembled, but the large grin spread across his face made it clear that he was laughing. Jax couldn’t help the laughter that escaped him as well, although he tried to hold back the noise as much as possible to not draw attention to them.
This was the way he liked it. This was the way it should be.
