Duke and Princess: The Value of the Power

Chapter 19

Chapter 19

May 12, 2023

"good morning" she mumbled shyly then held tight to the blanket and stood up from the bed happily "I-I am
go-going t-to see R-Richard." Again her trembling speech appeared once again without even her noticing it. After that, she wears her fluffy white flip-flops and heads to the wooden door and opens it. The fresh sea air blows right on her face refreshing her and waking her up from her half-awake half-asleep state. Lily quickly realized the princess's sudden statement which made her rush after her.

"Princess, wouldn't you prefer to eat and dress up before meeting the duke?" She asked, feeling uncomfortable walking outside in her pajamas, but she could not just allow Aravis to wander without supervision.

She only turned around and look at the made with an angelic smile on her face "F-Fine l-let's get dr-dressed up f-first " she told her as she headed back inside the room. The maid was a bit surprised when the Princess heeded her advice and returned to the room, but she was glad that she did. With a smile on her face, the maid helped Aravis with preparing to meet the Duke. She brushed her hair and braided it cleanly. Breakfast was delivered when the two were picking a dress. While Aravis ate, the maid took the opportunity to quickly change herself into the uniform, then joined the girl to eat a balanced meal with eggs and salad. After their stomachs were filled they returned to the task at hand. After they picked up a beautiful long light blue dress that was not heavy and had small detail of pink petals and flowers on the edge of it. There was no makeup on her eyes or her cheeks only on her lips, and that was a soft light pink so it would somehow cover the old wounds. As for the shoes, the maid tried to find something comfortable and easy to walk since they knew and could remember that Aravis had been used to walking with bare feet for years. Finally, they managed to find a pair of flat shoes that matches the color of the dress. Once the young princess was ready stood up and walked outside the bedroom without talking even looking at how beautiful and different she looked from before. It was hard to recognize and to look away from the beautiful face she had. Thanks to the hairstyle the maid had to choose to do, her face had the chance to light up and show her beautiful characteristics. Aravis was now ready to meet Duke.

As for the young Duke, he woke up around the same time as the Princess. He slept soundly and without any trouble. He did his routine set of exercises before breakfast was delivered. He enjoyed every bit of his meal and left an empty plate. He wiped his body with a cloth damped in water to clean his skin and after that, he dressed. He always did it without any assistance and always made sure to dawn his noble clothing flawlessly. As he was preparing for the day he wondered if Aravis rested well and if she behaved properly when she woke up. The girl gained a reputation of a rebel in his eyes.

Aravis walked to the wooden door of Richard's bedroom with a maid on her side. For once she had decided to follow to the fullest his commands. She would try to gain his trust, and his attention to a few things but it will need time. Taking a deep breath since she was feeling anxious she looked at the maid a little bit worried then again at the door. To be honest, she was really happy to see him, but at the same time nervous. She didn't want to hear him scolding her for being out late at night and taking some fresh air after a midnight nightmare. She only wished inside her that no one hadn't told him about last night... So she could be the one to tell him. Her hand gently knocked three times on the wooden door and waited for him to call her inside or something similar. As Richard was checking some of the documents he heard the knocking on his door. He was a bit surprised since he did not expect anyone to visit him. He placed the paper on the desk and walked to answer the mysterious visitor. When he opened the doors he at first was confused about who was standing before him, but soon he realized it was the Princess. She looked very different thanks to the braid and the dress. His face clearly showed that he was surprised by the change.

"Princess Aravis, good morning." He greeted her politely. "What do I owe the visit?"

She got all red and she tried to speak, but her mouth was frozen when she opened it. Quickly her eyes met the floor and held tight to the dress. Even her ears got all red and her heart was beating faster. She got all shy because she was dressed differently as well as had a different hairstyle.

"D-d-do you...l-like it..m-my Duke?" she asked him kindly .

' why am I asking it?! Of course, I look horrible in this. I am sure I look strange with this braid' she thought to herself as she shut tight her eyes and tried to remain calm in front of him without even raising her face and looking at him

The man looked at her, noticing her discomfort and embarrassment. The night before she was stubborn and talked back to him, even endangering herself and others by engaging in the battle with the mermaids. Now she was all flustered and avoided his gaze. If only she could find a golden spot with those two different personalities, he thought. Richard gently rested his fingers on her jaw and raised her face so they could look at each other.

"It's not polite to look down when talking with someone." He said kindly and then smiled ever so slightly. "You look appropriately, like a Princess." He added.

Her whole face got all red and even a small steam got out of her ears...it was such a cute view for someone. The maid shyly giggled at the shyness and cuteness of the young princess but it wasn't loud.

"I-I-I...c-came...h-h-here...t-to say th-that ...I-I-I am s-sorry .." she mumbled then without further delay she just hid her face in her palm and tried to calm herself down but it was impossible she just stood there trying her best. Then a flash of her old memories came into her mind. She kindly bow a royal and begged for forgiveness for her risky behaviour and that she left late at night. She explained very well the reason she headed outside last night.
Duke's expression changed as Aravis apologized and then confessed she left her room in the night. He looked displeased. The maid turned pale as she learned the Princess sneak out of the room. She considered it a failure on her part, even though she could do nothing since she was asleep.

"Why are you telling me this?" He asked with a stern voice while holding his hand behind his back.

She just held tighter her dress when he asked for the reason behind this and it was only natural. "Because you d-deserve to k-know the truth...a-a-and I am n-n-not a kid t-to take you f-for a f-f-fool. I m-must be more h-h-h-honest w-with you...." she said kindly as she slowly raised her face and looked up to him with eyes almost holding back tears of fear. She knew that Duke was better than the old " masters " she had but she did afraid of his scolding. Usually, everyone began by scolding her at the end of the road, they would just hit her. "S-So please ac-ac-accept my a-apology..." She baw once again

Duke looked her in the eyes, his expression have not changed a bit, despite the girl's attempts. "I told you to not wander without your maid accompanying you, yet you decide to disobey my order and left your room in the middle of the night. Do you think confessing and apologizing with change that fact?" He asked with an upset voice. "Why have you not wake up your maid to come with you?" He asked. The maid wanted to look down at the floor, feeling she kept failing her master ever since she was assigned to Aravis, but she knew Richard hated when people avoided eye contact when talking with him. She held her head high, wondering when was the good time to apologize.

Not all the fairy-tales starts with ' once upon a time...'. They do not start with a princess in her castle waiting for her knight on his shiny armor on the white horse. This story is different...
"It is both blessing and curse to feel everything so very deeply"
