Chapter 3: Adrian, the lightning dragon Part 1
Adrian’s POV
Adrian was currently leaning against a tree trunk that was providing him with shade to keep the bright sunrays out of his face as he decided to allow the peacefulness in the meadow surrounding him to soothe himself like a lullaby into a pleasant dream.
A gentle breeze passing through the meadow brushed against his face, softly pushing his blonde hair back and tickling his nose ever so slightly to the point that it seemed this breeze wasn’t interested in him taking a nap at this time.
He slowly opened his eyes to reveal those electric golden orbs he possessed just as he felt the breeze finish passing him by. He yawned ever so slightly before extending his left arm up and his right leg forward to stretch since he had been resting against this tree for awhile. But it wasn’t long before he flinched, hearing a loud voice in the distance that was gradually becoming louder as the owner of the voice got closer.
“Speak of the devil. So much for thinking that my day was going to remain peaceful.” Adrian thought with a frown on his face before he finally turned around, so he was now facing the owner of this loud voice, who had finally arrived close enough to the tree he had been leaning against to take a nap.
“Looks like you’re finally awake sleepy head, and here I thought you were just going to brood all day,” Skyla said with a grin on her lips since she couldn’t resist teasing him.
“Don’t you have better things to do than to bother me? Also, on second thought, I think I could sleep for a lot longer,” Adrian stated as he now turned his back to her, which caused a small whine to leave her lips before he felt his body get tugged back a bit when she decided to hug him from behind.
“Geez, why are you always like this? I swear you were born grumpy. Plus, I came over here because I wanted to spend time with you,” Skyla said with a whine to her voice before a pout found its way on her lips before she scowled, hearing the next words that came out of the blonde’s mouth.
“I swear you get louder each day. Also, you wanna spend time with me? I must be the unlucky one who wasn’t busy today, isn’t that right? Let me guess, Majesty and Lapis dumbly went into town again, didn’t they?” Adrian said with a sigh with that same frown on his lips as he glanced over his shoulder to look at her as she was still holding onto him.
“Hmm, maybe they did, or maybe they didn’t. But~ I didn’t wanna go with them today even if they asked me; I said I wanted to spend time with you, didn’t I, Mr. Grumpypants,” she grumbled with an unhappy expression still on her face.
“Plus, you enjoy spending time with me, right?” Skyla said with a questioning tone as she looked up at him with her dark teal eyes.
“I don’t know. It feels more like a chore if you ask me,” he said before moving forward as soon as he felt her remove her arms from his torso to escape her furious punch.
“Jerk! You have some nerve saying that to me!” she said with anger lacing her tone as soon as she heard him chuckle.
“I’m disappointed. What, no storm clouds?” the blonde said with a grin as he watched her blood boil before he watched her take a deep breath in order to calm her nerves before she glared at him.
“You’re just messing with me, aren’t you?” She said as she felt her temper start to slowly decrease.
“Depends. Are you going to leave me alone now?” he said as he crossed his arms before tilting his head to the left slightly.
“Heh, not a chance; I’m not letting you go that easily,” she stated as she seemingly appeared to regain her confidence to make it her absolute destiny to make his life miserable.
“Looks like my funeral is inevitable. And trust me, I’m not stupid; I highly doubt you just wanted to spend time with me. You want something, don’t you?” Adrian said, unamused since he knew the girl in front of him all too well.
“Well, maybe~ I kind of wanted to go into town today, and I figured that you would want to accompany me because you love me so much,” Skyla said with a sweet smile on her lips.
It hadn’t been long before the frown on Adrian’s lips deepened to show the displeasure that he felt towards the town of Silverlya or, rather, the sorcerers that inhabited the place. A loud sigh left his lips before he pinched the bridge of his nose.
“You know how I feel about that place. I rather take the least amount of steps I have to when it comes to that town. Also, if you didn’t wanna go with Majesty and Lapis. Why didn’t you bother Amethyst or Tanzanite?” Adrian asked as he finally uncrossed his arms and raised an eyebrow at her.
“Yeah, yeah, you hate the place, I know. Also, please, you know Tanzanite would never let Amethyst go into town by herself without him. You know the guy is always in complete mama bear mode when it comes to her,” Skyla said as she exaggerated the word please while she was talking as she placed her right hand upon her right hip.
“Ha, Tanzanite wouldn’t be too happy if you called him a mama bear when it comes to his sister, even though he is,” Adrian said as a soft chuckle left his lips, but it was clear in his golden eyes that he had no intention of going with her into town.
“You don’t have to say it, Adrian. I already know your answer that you won’t go with me into town,” Skyla started as she soon turned her back to him just as the gentle breeze from before came back and brushed by the both of them. The breeze didn’t hesitate to softly lift up her light teal hair making it flow like an ocean wave.
“But as you said, you have your reasons for hating the place, so I won’t force you to go. I just was hoping someone would have my back in case something went wrong with those sorcerers, but you know I can handle myself, so whatever goes wrong, goes wrong, right?” she said as she glanced back towards him and she didn’t force herself to hide the sneaky grin on her lips knowing full well that he would never let anything bad happen to her or anyone else he cared about and she knew she got him when she saw that irritated look on his face.
“I seriously hate you,” he grumbled as he walked alongside her as the two of them were walking around the busy streets of Silverlya before he frowned when he felt her grab onto his arm as she nestled the side of her face into his upper arm.
“Aww, don’t be like that. You know you love me,” Skyla said in the cutest voice she could muster, and her eyes were practically glittering at the fact that she was able to get Adrian to come with her since he normally made the excuse that someone else could go with her since they weren’t busy, but he would’ve preferred if they didn’t go into Silverlya at all. But, if him coming along with them meant that they would be safe, then he, unfortunately, couldn’t find it in himself to say no, regardless of how much he hated it.
“Just one chocolate shake at the café and then we’re leaving, you got it? It's bad enough the girl who works there knows exactly what you want to order,” he said as he glanced over at her as she still continued to hold onto his arm to ensure that she fully understood that he had no plans of staying there any longer than they needed to be, it was already bad enough he was here right now.
“Yeah, yeah, Grumpypants, I got it. One chocolate shake, and then we leave. But she knows your order too since you come along with me as well. But besides your grumpiness, thanks for coming into town with me today.” Skyla said, in the beginning, she had a slightly annoyed tone to her voice before it changed to the sweetest one she could muster when she thanked him for coming with her into town.
“You’re a real piece of work,” he said with a sigh, but his tone wasn’t rude; when he said it in Skyla’s book, it was easy to tell that he cared about her, even if he did act like he didn’t care at times. After awhile, he glanced over to the café that wasn’t too far ahead of them.
“Come on, let’s go in. Besides, I’m already staying here more than I want to,” he said, which caused Skyla to nod her head in agreement before the both of them headed inside the café that they usually always went to when they went into town when Skyla mostly wanted something sweet.
It wasn’t long before the two of them sat on the two stools that were positioned in front of the café bar where you could watch the person make the drink orders. A girl with long dark brown hair that was slightly wavy who was currently standing behind the counter making a drink soon greeted the two with a bright warm smile on her lips.
“It’s nice seeing you two come in today. Wait, don’t tell me; I got this. One chocolate shake and one mint chocolate chip shake, right?” the girl said, who was dressed in the café’s uniform, which was an orange dress with a red apron, which was paired with red dress shoes.
“Wow~ your memory is as sharp as ever, Marina. Also, I can’t promise that Adrian won’t be any less grumpy than he usually is. I swear this blondie was just born this way,” Skyla said with a sly smile on her lips as she nudged Adrian’s arm with her elbow.
“You’re pushing your luck, Skyla, and you’re already on thin ice,” he grumbled with a scowl on his face after he heard her statement and when he felt her start to nudge his arm with her elbow.
“Oh, I don’t mind at all, if you ask me, I kind of think it's cute…err…anyways, uh, let me go get the two of your drinks started,” Marina said quickly to change the subject since she just admitted to thinking that the blonde’s grumpiness was cute, but based on his expression it didn’t seem he paid it any mind.
“Aww, come on, Adrian. You know you can lighten up a little,” Skyla said in a low whisper as she turned her head toward him.
“Yeah, right. As if I could lighten up while in this place,” Adrian said before resting his chin in his open palm while his elbow rested against the café’s bar counter. But his attention was soon grabbed by the conversation he heard two men having who were a good enough distance from them. The average person likely wouldn’t be able to hear the entire conversion and might just end up picking up just a few words here and there. But right now, Adrian was fully focusing his dragon hearing on what they were saying exactly.
“It’s hard to believe that this town was once involved in the Great Sorcerers’ War,” the one man spoke to his friend who was currently across the table from him.
“Yeah, I know it's crazy, right? I bet those dragons were terrifying. Good thing we don’t have to worry about those dangerous things anymore,” the other man spoke to his friend before he chuckled.
“You say that, but man, wouldn’t it be nice to have a wish like you could have anything you wanted?” the one man spoke again to his friend, and they both seemed to be having a good time among themselves.
“Here are the two of your shakes,” Marina said with a happy smile on her lips before a small blush appeared on her cheeks.
“Hey..um...I would say we know each other since the two of you come in here often, and I err was wondering if maybe, you would be interested in going with me to the upcoming masquerade event,” Marina said with all the courage she had mustered up that she had been saving for the next time she saw Adrian, but she soon looked disappointed that he hadn’t heard a single word she said since he appeared to be distracted and to think she worked up so much courage to ask him too.
“So, what you’re saying is you would’ve taken on that dark demonic dragon during the war just to get a wish? I swear, you’re crazy,” the man said to his friend before they started laughing among themselves.
Skyla glanced over at Adrian’s face since she had heard the conversation as well, and despite his face not showing what he was currently feeling, she saw how he was clenching his right hand into a fist before he slightly shook his head and sighed.
“I’m fine, Skyla, really. Also, you were the one who dragged me here to enjoy that sweet shake of yours; shouldn’t you drink it?” Adrian said before glancing back over at her to see her concerned expression that soon changed into a happy one paired with a smile.
“Oh, that? I finished it a long time ago, slowpoke. Also, shouldn’t you be the one drinking your drink, blondie?” she said before playfully reaching over to pinch his cheek before he lightly smacked her hand away.
“Also, sorry, Marina, I missed what you said?” Adrian said as he soon shifted his attention towards Marina, who seemed to flinch on the spot that he actually said sorry to her. Maybe she was just dreaming this entire thing.
“Ohh, uh…I just said for the two of you to enjoy your shakes and uh enjoy the rest of your day,” Marina said with a sweet smile, but she couldn’t find it in herself to ask him out again to the masquerade event since she used up all the courage for the moment when he just so happened to not be paying attention to her.
“Well, anyways, since you plan on taking your time, I’m gonna look around town,” Skyla said with a grin as she got up from her seat. Just as Adrian was about to yell at her that she definitely wasn’t going to run around town, she playfully stuck her tongue out at him before running out of the café’s front door, not giving him a chance to say a single word and judging by the last expression she saw on his face, he wasn’t happy in the slightest.
But, unfortunately for Skyla, when she had decided to bolt out of the café’s front door and run down the street, she hadn’t been paying attention to where exactly she was running to or, rather, who was in her path.
The next chapter will continue from this one, which is part 2 to this chapter since it all wouldn't fit in this chapter :D
“This is all your fault. Why couldn’t you just have been serious for one day in your life and taken me seriously? Now, look what happened!”
