13: Grey
He turned to her and smiled, they both known they where fucked, but they known they where going to be okay somehow. There was no hospital in town, but if they drove down the pebble road then onto the pavement road, then they'd be in a hospital, oddly named 'Sir Pemmerment hospital' and they drove all the way out there to get checked out and to see if they could get set up appointments and to deliver there. But they where royally rejected before they even got in the door, probably having to do with their tax returns (everyone is documented in this land after all) the nurse at the front didn't even call Grey Millie's husband as if they where not married despite being both called Kingsley, every soul who worked there at peppermint probably assumed the pair where homeless or at least did not own land, and sure, legally they did not. Legally. However, the doctor they got to speak with briefly did say they could deliver there, because Grey did have health insurance (bad insurance) and Millie and the unnamed one where under it, of course that would cost a arm and a leg, and Grey was sure they couldn't fix the floor until after the babe was born, but that's what Grey wanted. But they known they'd be okay, if they needed a check up to see if something went wrong, they'd get that done somehow. The light shown down into their car as they looked at each other, it just got done raining and the wind was blowing around all over before hand and now the light was coming into their car. "Grey." Millie said, smiling with tired eyes. "Are we really going to stay here?" Grey laughed a awkward chuckle. "This is fine, if you start having problems we'll run off somewhere else if we can." Millie smiled more and shook her head. "No no, ha I mean, here, at that house." "Well, sure. We can fix up the house, we can raise- them, in there if we fix it." Grey reached out and grabbed her hands. "It'll be our project! We'll make it look godly before the baby can even remember." Millie wished she could slip her hands away from his but didn't want to be taken the wrong way. "It has a lot of potential, but I mean, it's right next to a swamp, right next to it. What if the baby drowns when their older? And besides there's no kids near by, I don't want them growing up alone like me. I don't think we'll get any after this, I'm thankful we have them as is." Grey pursed his lips held fast. He had no answer to it beyond that "I think it'll be fine." Millie looked away for a second and moved away. "I hope so, I just have a feeling... And also, I'm already feeling, ah, bad. I'm not sure I'll be okay being pregnant out here. I don't know anything of it!" Grey turned away from her and started the car it rumbling to life. "I'm going to put a tarp down tonight." "That wouldn't help me much." "I didn't say that would help, I was just- you know, saying." The car turned to life and the engine hummed and buzzed to wake, and they where off out of the lot and down the road.
That same night sitting in the chairs in the living room they talked things over once more and came to no humble conclusion, Millie felt bad over this place, it touched her in a bad way she did not understand. Grey did not feel the same way. That was just how it was.
The night she told him she was pregnant a week ago was quite a shook. He just started driving out of town, he was still high over getting and job (and by now he was doing quite well and worked over it.) Then he saw her, Millie was standing by the road looking down it clearly waiting for someone. He parked by her, she flung the door to the car on his side open fast and jumped into his arms, he moved in his seat to make more room. He couldn't even finish asking what was going on when she yelt out "I'm pregnant!" And after that he could not even speak, there was nothing he had to say to that. He just pulled her closer into the car and started laughing and honked the car a good 10 diffract times. By the time he even got around to telling her about his new job she didn't even believe it. "No way in Hell you got a job in the same day!" She laughed and kicked her feet back and forth in his lap. They sat there a long long time, laughing talking and chatting about nothing at all, sometimes even not talking about anything relevant either.
