Marina awkwardly strolled behind the captain and his mate as they conversed. She was uneasy by the captain's remarks about her, and she hoped Antoni wouldn't start thinking negatively about her as well. She began to lose track of time while overthinking, and she had no idea where she was walking as she was lost in her own thoughts. Then, all of a sudden, she looked up and saw a massive crowd in the street. When she came to, she noticed a man standing in the crowd, staring at her. The girl squinted for a moment before widening her eyes.
The man resembled Matias a lot, and she was afraid he was still alive, therefore he decided to follow her and get a revenge on her. Or even worse... hurt her again. Her heart began to race like if she had run millions of miles, and she began to breathe rapidly and she started to turn pale as white bread. Antoni, who had been walking with her the entire time, seemed worried and asked if she was okay. He softly gripped her wrist with his hand. That enraged Marina, who whirled back with weeping eyes and smacked his hand, shouting, "Don't touch me!" in an angry tone. The man was perplexed; all he wanted to do was assist her. The girl continued to take deep breaths and examine the area to see if Matias would assault her at any moment. Mr. Santarelli turned around to see what was going on as she was panicking, and found Marina distraught and Antoni perplexed.
"What is going on here?" The captain enquired. Matias was nowhere to be found when the young lady looked around again. She shouted and panicked, running into the captain and crying on his arm. The man was perplexed, so he put his hand on her back for comfort, but he began to feel uncomfortable since they were still in the city, and people stared at them. "Perhaps we should start going quicker towards the ship." Antoni suggested as he realized the situation wasn't looking good. Marina stayed near to Mr. Santarelli, even if she didn't like him because of his behavior, she still felt safer next to him, and Matias wouldn't dare to assault her then since the captain looked more intimidating than her. They came across a tavern while walking. Antoni noticed it on his left and approached his friend, pulling his sleeve and asked him to go over to it. "Are you actually thinking about eating right now?" the captain inquired, puzzled. "No, I just— I thought that would be more peaceful than being on a ship." the man replied. The man remained staring at him, perplexed, and Marina jumped into the conversation with a quick "I'd love that! Please." The captain sighed and shrugged, agreeing to go eat something now rather than later. As soon as they walked in, Marina turned around and asked the captain and Antoni if they were fluent in French. "Oh, no," Mr. Santarelli answered with a chuckle. "All I know how to do is introduce myself."
"I know how to swear in French, if that's something." Antoni said, placing his hands on his friend's shoulders. When they sat down, they started all looking at their menus to see what to order. Marina felt a bit bummed since all the meals were for people that ate meat, so she didn't have much options to choose from, but either way she wasn't that much hungry or in the mood to eat. When the waiter finally approached them, he inquired what they wanted to order. The captain assisted with all of the orders and talked in French with the waiter. "I'll have beef tourchons with a side of mixed salad," he continued. "Oh, and I'd like it if you could recommend any red wines." Then it was Marina's turn. "I'd just like an omelette with asparagus, please." she said.
"You won't order anything else?" Antoni questioned, looking at her. Back on the ship, even she could prepare herself an omelette. The girl hesitantly explained that she wasn't really hungry and that a simple omelette would suffice. The three of them started talking a lot after the waiter wrote everything down and went to get their dishes ready and Antoni was the loudest in the room. By speaking with the guys and making jokes, the young lady began to feel considerably better. The meals turned out to be great, and the captain noticed Marina's plate and felt awful that there wasn't much food on it, so he offered her part of his mixed salad. Marina, flattered, grinned awkwardly and said, "It's fine, I'm full anyways." The captain wanted to give the lady a second chance and didn't want to pass judgment on her too quickly because it seemed childish. And they talked normally the entire time, not fighting like children.
"Do you remember when we first boarded the ship and you were so upset for the entire week?" A chuckle escaped his friend's lips. "Yeah, you always act so grumpy. What is with you?" Marina snorted, adding, "Isn't it worth a try to smile? You usually appear awful and lifeless."she continued to snicker.
"Excuse me?" Asked Mr. Santarelli, completely confused.
"What? It's not as if I'm lying. You're rude, lifeless, your hair is always a mess. Would it be so hard to get it together?"
"Why would you say such a thing?"
"God, don't be so sensitive. I'm just saying." Marina inquired.
This was the final straw for the man; he was so angered by her statements that he rose up, placed enough money on the table to pay for everyone's plates, and walked out, declaring, "I'm leaving, I'm done here."
"What is your problem?" the girl inquired, looking perplexed. "I just told you not to be so gloomy!" The man had already walked away when Antoni stood up and yelled, "Gabriel, wait!" He then turned back and informed Marina, sternly, "You've done it this time. I used to defend you, but not any longer." The young lady was rendered speechless. She was completely perplexed by everyone's reaction because she thought what she said was humorous and would make Antoni laugh. No one, however, found it amusing. "Why is everyone here so weird?" she sighed as she turned around to face D'Angelo. "I thought you were kind." He expressed his disappointment as he gazed at her. The girl became even more perplexed and exclaimed, "I am nice!!"
In the meantime, Antoni walked outside to see how his friend was doing. Mr. Santarelli stood outside the tavern, tears in his eyes, but he was ashamed of them and began wiping them away right away. "Come on, don't tell me you were so hurt by what she said?" his best friend pleaded, resting his hands on his shoulders. "It's not that she said it, it's what she said. I try so hard to act less upset." the distressed man remarked, looking down. "But am I ever going to be good enough? People will always judge me by my appearance." Antoni hugged him tightly after that.
"I think you're good enough to me. I adore you even more than my sister."
"Don't say that, she isn't that bad." The captain chuckled as tears streamed down his face. His friend chuckled as well and told him how he hadn't met the real side of her yet. The captain rolled his eyes, doubting it and assuming he had already met the real her.
The weather the next day was even worse than the day before. The sailors became apprehensive, thinking it would be preferable to stay in France for another day, but Mr. Santarelli refused and asked to depart as quickly as possible. Marina was miserable the entire day, due to the incident at the tavern and bothered Margherita about it. The old lady sighed, unable to bear her whining any longer, and pleaded with her to simply apologize to the man. Marina was taken aback by this and refused to apologize, claiming that she had said nothing wrong and that he should be the one to apologize for making everything appear unpleasant. "Look, I'm getting too old for this. Either you apologize or you stop whining like a child." Margherita exclaimed, squinting and pressing her fingers to her eyes. The young lady sighed and eventually agreed, wanting to show the woman that she was no longer a child and that she could act maturely if she so desired. She is, after all, eighteen, and her nineteenth birthday is approaching. She walked to the deck to sweep the floor and then rest because cleaning isn't her strong suit, and while cleaning she spotted the captain conversing with Francesca, the red-haired girl. Marina gave her a sneer since she couldn't stand her, and the unpleasant girl couldn't either. She kept sweeping the deck and waited for the girl to leave the captain so she could apologize to him alone. When she finally left, she walked downstairs and deliberately bumped her arm on Marina's shoulder, giving her a dirty look. At this time, the young girl couldn't stand her and her rage was getting the best of her, but she was able to calm herself.
Mr. Santarelli then began to walk to the main deck, and Marina quickly approached him, saying, "Mr. Santarelli. I came to say something to you." She said this while holding the broom and leaning against it. With his arms crossed, the captain gave her a dubious look and continued, "I'm listening."
"I came here to express my regret. I apologize if I offended you, but I'm not sure why you were so furious. It was all in good fun."
"Is this a joke?" He continued,
"No? It's not as if I offended you crazily."
He chuckled bitterly, unable to believe she had given him such a poor apology. Marina was irritated when he started calling her careless, and she exclaimed, "Careless! You'll never encounter a more kind person than me! I don't eat meat because I don't like killing animals!"
"I eat meat and adore animals," he said, looking perplexed at her. "That does not, however, imply that I despise animals. Is that what you're getting at?" Marina became agitated after being thrown off by the captain. "No, I didn't mean it that way—"
"You are an immature brat who only worries about herself and never about other people's feelings. Maybe it's good you left your wedding, your poor and unfortunate fiancé." the man said calmly as he moved closer to her, making her walk backwards and lean on the banister. The young lady recalled her own brother's comments to her, who had said something similar to her before he died. She began to sob uncontrollably as she held herself and pleaded with him to stop. He looked at her and inquired whether he was offending her.
"God! Yes!"
"But making fun of my appearance is fine?" He grinned in response to the girl's yell. "You're getting off the ship at the next port, Miss Marina Rivalli." Marina's heart broke when the captain stated this, and she was extremely terrified that she was ready to cry to him and beg him to stay, telling him how she'd do everything to change. A wave hit just as she was about to say something, causing the vessel to jump and the girl to fall from the ship. She screamed in terror and held out her hand as she fell. Mr. Santarelli dashed to the banister and leaned against them to check on the girl. He kept yelling at her to swim, but he had no idea that she had never learned to swim. Marina was thrown left and right by the big waves, causing her to gulp too much water and exhausting her. She began to cough and slowly giving up. After hearing the girl cry, everyone hurried to the main deck. Antoni approached him and inquired about the incident. "What!" Antoni exclaimed as the man explained the issue to his companion. "Everyone! Pull down the sails!" He yelled at the sailors, and the ship began to slow down. Margherita and Giordana tossed a long rope for the girl to grab onto. The captain began to remove his coat and boots, and Francesca inquired as to what he was doing. "I'm going to save her," he replied. "I may despise her, but I do not want her to die." The man climbed up the banister and dove into the sea, attempting to save the girl. Due to the violent sea, he had difficulty swimming.
Marina ultimately gave up trying to swim and began sinking further into the sea, gasping for air. "I deserve this," she thought to herself as her eyesight began to blur. "I deserve to die." she thought as her eyes closed slowly. She looked up to see a man reaching out to her.
The man swam up to the surface, clutching her closely, while Antoni threw a ladder for the man to climb up. He struggled to climb because he was holding the girl with one hand and climbing up with the other. Luckily she was insanely thin. He eventually made it to the top, thanks to Antoni's assistance. Marina was thrown on the floor as quickly as he could, and she appeared to be dead. Everyone, especially the captain, was terrified. His anxiety began to take hold of him, and he began to tremble. He couldn't decide what to do, so he circled the same spot ten times. He then pulled back his wet black hair away from his face, recalling reading about CPR in a medical article. He strained to recall the details, and when he did, the man got down on his knees next to her and began performing the procedure on her. He pressed his heel into her breastbone in the center of her chest.
Then he interlocked his fingers with the palm of his other hand on top of the hand on her chest. He kept pressing down for a full minute, but nothing worked. He remembered the final step as he looked at her soft lips in the moment. He felt self-conscious about pressing his lips to hers in front of everyone, as it would be perceived as inappropriate. He moved in closer to her now pale face, he placed his rough hands on her soft cheeks and whispered "Please... wake up." His tears started falling on her face and just as he was going to pinch her nose, she vomited up a lot of water and continued to take long breaths. Everyone began to applaud, and Mr. Santarelli exhaled a breath of relief before collapsing on the floor. Marina then began to cry and in a panic, held the captain tightly while continuing to thank him. Antoni dropped down on his knees and held both of them, smiling and stating how delighted he was that they were both alive.
The girl then stood up, cold and stressed, and was visibly shivering. She began to go slowly towards her modest cabin, but the captain placed his hand on her shoulder and nervously murmured, "You may, of course, remain in my cabin. My bed is larger, and everything appears to be more comfortable." He walked the young lady to his cabin after she smiled and thanked him for letting her stay in it.
