The captain returned to his cabin a few hours later to check on the girl. She was sleeping in his bed with four blankets and looked peaceful. He turned around and started walking back, thinking he'd woken her up for no cause. While walking, he accidentally knocked over a vase from his work table and it shattered on the ground. "Darn it!" He became concerned that he had accidentally woken her up and began apologizing as she rubbed her eyes. "I came to bring you something hot to eat," he remarked as he sat down next to her on the bed. "Margherita cooked up a batch of pumpkin soup. I hope you enjoy it; I mean, it's absolutely delicious." He then placed a wooden tray on the nightstand with the bowl of soup on it. "That's nice, thank you," Marina said, "but I'm not really hungry—" the captain, who was nervous, stopped her and exclaimed, "God! I'm such a moron, I should've brought you hot tea... You're probably already dehydrated!" The young lady continued to snort at his worried side before resting her head on his shoulder for a little period.
Mr. Santarelli's cheeks reddened and he inquired as to what was wrong. "I'm just, such an awful person am I?" she moaned and began to explain. "It would have been better if you had just let me die. I'm so sick of living at this point." she cried as she squeezed the fold of her nightgown. The man wrapped his arm around her and looked at her with concern, saying, "Look, you aren't bad. It's simply that some of the things you say could be damaging. Not to mention you kind of tend to act spoiled... I try being good with you, but sometimes you make it so hard."
The girl began to cry even harder, and Mr. Santarelli panicked and tried to console her by saying, "Ah look, to be completely honest, I wasn't the best either. Because my life hasn't always been easy, I've been known to take out my frustrations on people without even realizing it..."
Marina wiped the tears from her eyes and felt a connection to him, for she, too, has been known to strike out at others for no reason. "I wanted to ask you," He said. "Why did you have such a panic attack in France?" The girl's eyes widened in fear, and she moved away from him, requesting that the theme be changed because she doesn't feel comfortable discussing it. The man then had an idea and suggested that they simply talk and get to know each other to help her relax. They ended up laughing for an hour and conversing for a long time.
Marina was lying on her stomach, fidgeting with her legs in the air, and snickered, "You know, I've known you for a while now, and I never inquired for your age."
"Really?" He exclaimed, surprised all dramatically. "How dare you! Your own captain! For your information, Madam, I am twenty-one years old." The young lady snickered and commented on how his dark circles under his dark brown eyes make him appear older. The man simply rolled his eyes and continued his questioning on her. "Why did you come to my ship, of all places?" Marina glanced at him anxiously and stated that she was fleeing her own wedding and needed a mode of transportation that wouldn't get her caught by her own parents. And when she learned that he is a captain, she realized that this is an ideal opportunity. "However, I don't entirely regret fleeing... For the first time in my life, I was able to travel, meet Antoni, and... meet you." She bit her lower lip as the captain quietly smiled, pleased that someone was appreciating him.
"I feel as if, my near death experience has opened my eyes! I'm just, starting to realize that I should stop being so whiny and for once actually be kind." She twisted her brothers ring "I've done some things in my life that I'm not particularly proud of." The man looked at her as he placed his hand on hers "That's fine. I'm honestly just happy that you're willing to acknowledge your wrongs." The young lady smiled and felt happy that he's encouraging her to be better, rather than judging her for her past.
She then stretched out her arms and began to yawn "It was nice talking to you Mr Santarelli, but it's late and I should be going to sleep." she said as she stood up. The captain looked at her nervously and asked, "You can just stay here for the night. I'm not bothered... I could either sleep with Antoni or in your cabin. It's not an issue at all. It's the least I can do."
Marina stood behind the doors, only her right side of her body being visible, and whispered, "Good night, Mr. Santarelli." and looked at him with her alluring blue eyes. He pressed his lips and wished her a good rest. The captain flopped on the bed, groaning about everything as she shut the doors. He closed his eyes and all could he think about her was her ocean blue eyes.
