Most humans are attached to their egos, they require external validation for their egos. But to be above such things one must detach, and not need validation.
Detachment gives freedom, but if you are attached then you are a slave to your desires. One must practise self mastery, but this only comes with detachment, with no desire.
Like animals we respond to conditioning, through our desires. For example the media and other social influences conditioning people to be consumeristic, and people don't even realise it.
But if you can detach from the world and realise that you are not your ego, that you don't have to respond to all your desires because you have choice in this matter then you will be free. You will be free from the conditioning. To be human and conscious is to have choice. Without choice one is merely an animal.
The ego wants pleasure, it wants what it wants, and it wants things now!
But it can only feel happiness for a short time, and then we want the next dopamine hit.
The ego is always wanting more. We buy things, we eat, but it's never enough. The joy only lasts for a bit, then we want the next thing.
That is why so many people are so depressed, and they don't even know why.
But if you can ideally let go of all your desires, and become detached from the material, then you will eventually find freedom.
Material desires, like wealth, fame, girls, status, etc these are all empty and not worth seeking.
But when one can let go of these, or never desire them in the first place, and become detached for spiritual things, or the higher things, then we are truly free, to go on our own way, and we will never feel the need to compare ourselves to others.
If you are unhappy in this world, then that's because you don't have a detached personality, you're too caught up with your ego and your false desires. To be attached is to suffer, to be detached is to be free.
Detachment is good for the soul because it prevents you from the toxic state of "want".
Also it gives you the freedom to think deeper and more clearly, to detach from all these mental constructs of the world, to be present in the moment, to be free of ego, all these superficial things, and then you can actually have time in your life to think about what is real, what is truly important. In this state of detachment, when you are mentally detached and present, you will be more productive and happier.
In conclusion one should be detached from the materialism and shallowness of this world, and focus instead on what is important - one's own spiritual development, and the higher things.
The higher things meaning one's own spiritual growth in wisdom and virtue, one's own spiritual elevation.
This is how one finds peace, freedom, contentment and meaning in one's life.
