Ethel awoke with a jerk, her eyes shooting open. A man was standing over her. She couldn’t see who it was with the early morning light behind him.

“Do you always sleep with the front door wide open?” The man dropped down to his haunches, peering at her. “Now had I been the rogue and lived up to my reputation, I would have had the pick of your fine wares here, wouldn’t I?”

“Shut up, Darric.” Ethel sat bolt upright. The sudden movement made her see white spots and everything began to spin. She fell back down.
