It boasted
simple and understandable laws that did their best to keep everyone in check.
People were not given complete freedom but rather an option to live in the city
under certain conditions.
Everyone had
to earn their keep, sustain progress, and produce, if not material goods, then
mental ones such as education or entertainment. The quality of products one
provides determined one’s status and privileges. That was how they earned a
place to live, food, water, protection, and so on. Any kind of
dispute was left for the people to deal with, but only to a certain point. For
example, if violence broke out.
That’s where
the enforcers came in. They were here to stop the violence with force if
necessary. Not the most elegant solution, but the only one they had for years until
Anciel became capable enough to have his own influence on the place.
With him in
mind, every citizen knew that they might potentially be observed at any given
moment.
Of course, there were those who tried to oppose such kind of treatment, but after a few
open assaults and assassination attempts they came to terms that there was no
one who could possibly stop him, thus people have gradually gotten used to it.
Anyone with
clear intentions and conscience had nothing to fear, for Anciel was nothing if
not absolutely fair. Being the Master of all Cosmic States, anyone was as
transparent as an open book in front of him. When a
situation arose that he had to involve himself in the matters of the
citizens, he was understanding but hardly forgiving, in most cases banishing
anyone who he deemed was beyond redemption.
As for
religion, the current law stated that while people are free to believe whatever
they like, they are not allowed to act radically upon those beliefs.
Also, most
of the criminals or such organizations that plagued the city before his arrival
were now either disbanded or left of their own accord, unable to stand up to
him. The only
threats people had in recent times were those from beyond the city walls or a
rare outburst of violence inside, which was usually stopped in its tracks by
the city’s guardian before it even happened. When it came
to defending the city and the rest of the republic, the rapid technological
advance meant that no other nation could afford a direct confrontation anymore,
making the peaceful
Nowadays,
people have adjusted to the system in place and have accepted that their best
course of action is to give their best to contribute and reap the fruits of
their labor in order to enjoy their lives peacefully.
Rarely
anyone dared to harm another in fear of judgment.
There was
also the fact that Anciel would sometimes reward selfless acts with his
presence, bestowing upon the small and random ‘city heroes’ extra privileges
and income, motivating everyone to do an occasional good deed.
People were
slowly accepting their differences and were becoming a unity, even though
sometimes it meant unfairness, but such was the nature of life and it was a
fact that some were born as nomads or orgriash while others had no natural advantages.
Yet they
decided to put those differences to good use instead of hating each other for
them.
Not that
they had any choice in the first place, as acts of hate, deceit, or any kind of
productivity hindrance were regarded as unlawful. But credit where it’s due,
the people of
"I must return to my duties. Will you take care of his needs for the moment?" Anciel asked Noix and Lalane.
"Absolutely. I already prepared a set of clothing for Label, for the time being," Lalane opened a suitcase and a fresh pair of grey trousers and jacket, a white waistcoat, and a colorful tie, rolled out of it, almost perfectly ironed.
"Wait!" a female voice could be heard echoing from the hall.
Everyone turned around to see Mai rush in and try to catch her breath.
"Wait for…?" the green-eyed assistant looked puzzled.
"Wait for me… *pant* I wanted to meet ...him…" the young woman kept leaning on the metal door frame.
"You wanted to meet him while he’s still naked?" Lalane fixed her glasses.
"Aye! I mean, nay! I jus’ didn’t wanna be left behind…" The girl was fuming, getting all red.
After it was pointed out, Label realized how naked he really was, so he quickly grabbed the case while covering his vital points.
"I’ll be right back," he pinned the sword into the floor, nervously dressing up behind it.
"I leave him in your care for now. Tomorrow, I will be his personal guide for the whole day, leaving you to make any necessary preparations for the tests," Anciel bowed ever so slightly and started walking out.
"Anciel!" blondie called him, now finally dressed. With the exception of his unruly hair, he looked like a gentleman.
The dark man stopped.
"While I was asleep, I had many dreams…" Label was eager to tell his friend all about them.
"Ones when you see someone who is you, but not you? I have them as well. Tomorrow, I will answer any questions you might have, and you can tell me all about your dreams, but now, I have to attend to some of my more urgent matters," he threw his katana up in the air and it transformed into a great black saber-tooth panther.
"Panusa!" the blond man went to meet her, but the large beast moved away, occasionally sniffing from afar, swinging her tail nervously.
"I’m sorry Label… she hasn’t seen you for a long time. It’s best to let her gradually warm up to you again," he then mounted the panther and left the lab.
"Hmm… looks to me like you need time to ‘warm up to me’ yourself," blondie crossed his arms and scowled.
"Not quite the welcome you were expecting?" Noix came closer and offered his hand.
Label accepted.
"This is Lalane, my assistant. Without her by my side, I wouldn’t know what date it was..." he introduced her.
"Nice to finally meet you," she offered her hand and smiled.
"Nice
to meet you too, Lalane. Ehh… date?"
"Oh, my apologies. A lot has changed while you were asleep. I invented a proper calendar in the meantime with months named after the Roses family line. You see, the way it works is—"
"*cough, cough*" Lalane tried to restrain the professor.
"Oh…right. I assume that is the least of your worries now. It would be better if you would ask us anything that interests you. We can also board the Noisemaker, instead of standing here at the half-destroyed laboratory…" Noix shrugged.
"Sorry about that," the blond man scratched his nape.
"Haven’t ye forgotten someone?" Mai stepped forward.
"I presumed you have already met on the outer walls," Noix tried to justify himself but seeing her stern eye, decided against it, "Label, meet Rose Rogue de Mai, the daughter of Rose Blanche d’Avril."
"Hey, why ye bringin’ her into this?" she put her hands on hips.
"You are the daughter of Le Grand Capitaine?" Label’s eyes suddenly had a sparkle to them.
"Ye know what? I changed me mind. I’ll be in the cockpit," Mai furiously turned around and exited the lab.
The trio was left in awkward silence.
"Was it something I said?" Label was confused.
"Aahh… no, it is my fault. I just found it to be a good anchor point for introduction, having in mind your previous knowledge and acquaintanceship with Lady Blanche, alas I keep forgetting that the Roses did not part on the greatest terms."
"What happened?" blondie was curious.
"It is a story for another time, for which it may be better for Miss Mai to tell you herself than for me to massacre it now to the point of becoming an unrecognizable mess…" the professor put a hand to his forehead, then continuing, "In the meantime, let us board the ship and we shall do our best to answer any of your questions. I am sure there are a lot of them."
The trio started making their way to where the ship was parked.
"Are you scared of heights, or suffer from motion sickness?" Lalane was taking precautionary measures since she had to clean the F.S. Noisemaker not once after some unfortunate passengers.
"Oh, not to worry, my dear assistant. Label here apparently rides dragons with ease," Noix smiled, walking through the hall.
"Oh, right! Would you mind showing me the fabled Albus, Mr. Label?"
"Mr. Label?!" blondie shouted, "No, no, no… that doesn’t sound right. Just Label is okay."
"Good luck with that…" Noix mumbled.
"Sure…" she pursed her lips strongly, making everyone wait to hear what happens, "…Mr. Label, sir."
The professor just shook his head and Label shrugged, seeing there was no helping it.
"So… about the dragon…" she persisted.
"Yeah, sorry but I can’t. I tried to do it when I wanted to reach this place, but he just wouldn’t appear…oh right, the sword!"
"No,
leave it in there where it is, please. It is a property of
"Do you want it?" Lalane asked the blond man.
"…yeah. I feel like it belongs to me…somehow."
"I will make it happen," she saluted.
"…okay. Thanks, Lalane," Label graced her with an honest smile, "Tell me… is Master Zandor alive? Is my village okay? My orphanage? What happened to the Serpent Forces? What about Dyus? Also… thanks for taking care of me. It must have been a lot of work…"
Lalane opened her book while Noix slapped his forehead, putting the other hand on the man’s shoulder.
"No Label, thank you. So rude of me not to remember that earlier. I am forever grateful to you and Anciel for what you did to save me from that paralyzing poison."
"You
got poisoned because you were shielding us… We did it because we were grateful,"
"Still, the lengths you two go to help others… it is something to look up to, for all of us simple mortals," the blue-clad man’s voice softened.
"Hey, I’m a simple mortal too…"
"We… will talk about all that in a few days. Now about the questions you asked—" Noix was about to answer but Lalane jumped in, with her book open.
"The answers are, in order of questions; Yes, yes, yes, unknown, died, you are welcome and yes it was."
"Lalane, be a bit more considerate," Noix lifted a finger.
"No, it’s alright. I’m glad everything is fine, except... Dyus is dead?"
"He died in the explosion of the Gunfish, along with Anguis," the professor told him what he heard.
"…was there no way to save him?", Label seemingly got lost in thought, saying after a few moments; "I’d like to go and visit my mom."
"That will be no problem, but I would advise you to spend at least another week here in order for us to bring you up to speed and run some necessary tests," Noix put his palms together as if asking for a favor.
The blond man frowned disappointingly.
"Please, Label. We won’t… can’t force you, but it is for the best," Lalane supported that idea.
"Alright…can I at least see Master Zandor?"
"Absolutely. We shall make that our first order of business," the man’s yellow eyes were joyous. He was now a friend of the orgriash for quite some time.
A metal door opened as soon they came close. They entered, and the door closed.
"Uhh…
why is there a room that leads nowhere?"
"It’s an elevator," the green-eyed assistant answered shortly.
"Elevating what?"
"Us," Noix smiled and pressed a button.
As it
started moving, blondie almost lost his balance. On top of
the laboratory, a small circle on the floor surrounded by a handrail
opened, letting the elevator come out along with some steam. The trio came out of it.
In front of them, there was
the majestic Noisemaker.
"Whooooah!" Label dropped his jaw as his eyes gazed upon the enormous flying contraption.
Still looking quite like a ship, thanks to its sailing capabilities, the airship had a huge steam engine in its center and multiple propellers that kept it up in the air. Parts of it still looked like they could do some work. Such as all parts unprotected by metal shielding and thus exposed to enemy fire.
"It’s a work in progress," Noix fixed his glasses, frowning and grinning at the same time.
"Will ye lot hurry it up already?" a female voice could be heard through the ship’s outer speakers.
Lalane waved to the impatient Mai while the two men were climbing the rope ladder that lead to the first and mostly open deck, protected only by handrails. Noticing that the young lady is too stubborn to let go of her trusty book, Label grabbed her hand and pulled her up.
"Thank you," Lalane nodded, following into the inner parts of the ship.
"This is the engine room; the heart of this grand machine," the blue man was proud to show his creations, made out of spinning cogs, cylinders, and a dozen pressure valves.
"Now this is far more impressive than that clock thing you showed us the first time we met."
"Well… the ‘clock thing’ is actually not such a failure you make it out to be," he tapped on the device on his forearm.
"At least not the pocket variant," his assistant was quick to correct him.
"Indeed. It turns out you two were onto something after all, as the whole social aspect of the device flew straight out of the window and the thing only serves to rush us, it would seem…
Some things turned out better than others."
"Not like Professor Noix keeps to his schedule or anything," she poked Label with her elbow as they giggled behind the man’s back.
"Alright, alright. The fun is over. Let us continue," he waved for them to follow up a tight staircase.
"This is the middle deck, where the crew’s quarters and the pilot cabin are," Noix continued with the tour.
"All aboard? We’re taking off!" Mai was eager to fly.
