"I'm Valerie. Who are you?" the girl behind him replied, looking down at him and studying his features.
"I-I'm Miles"
"Hello, Miles. I'm Laura. I'm one of the oldest here. Tell me, what brings you to this area?" a woman with a sweet and calming voice asked while reaching her hand out to help him up. When he looked up to see who it was, he saw a woman who seemed to be in her mid-twenties. She had her messy, brown hair put in a bun with a few strands sticking out.
"uh, I-I don't know. I just woke up here..." he muttered, taking her hand and standing up.
"... What? You just- woke up here?"
"Y-yeah... Where am I?"
"You're in the servants' sleeping chambers in The Vanques House."
"The... The servants' sleeping chambers? In The Vanques House?"
"Yes, exactly."
"Look, if you're playing some kind of prank on me, I'm not having it. Who are you, and where am I?"
"I'm sorry sir, I don't know what you're talking about. I do not know what a 'prank' is, and we just told you where you are."
They all stood in silence for a while until someone barged through the door. It was a man who looked like he was in his mid-forties. He had brown hair with a few grey hairs here and there.
"What are you doing here?! Aren't you supposed to be out working by now?!" He had a rough voice that matched his face. After he had looked around at everyone, his eyes landed on Miles.
"And who are you? I don't seem to recognize you from anywhere. I also don't recognize your clothes."
Miles looked at Laura, who looked back at him with a worried look.
"Hello? I'm asking you something, boy!"
"My name is Miles, sir," Miles answered quickly.
"Miles who?"
"Miles Damien Sonterra, sir"
"I don't know you. Who are you and why are you here?"
"I-" Miles was quickly interrupted by Laura, who answered the man's question for him: "He's a new servant here, sir. Lady Collones hired him. He was just about to change his clothes, sir," she looked at Miles who immediately nodded.
"A new servant. I see. Laura, go get him some clothes. The rest of you go do your chores."
"Yessir," All of them replied, hurrying to do what they were told.
"Miles."
"Yes, sir?"
"I did not know we had a new servant, so I didn't have time to update the chore list. Today you can walk around and get to know the place. Tomorrow you will start working."
"Yessir!"'
The man glanced at him one last time before slamming the door behind him.
Miles just stood there observing the room for a few minutes. It was a small, compact room, mostly filled with beds, all of them barely having anything more than a small mattress and a thin blanket. There was a small part of one of the walls where there was a little shelf. He guessed that the shelf was probably for their clothes and other things. The only light source they had was a small window up in one of the corners of the room and a few candles here and there.
He looked out the window and saw that it was sunny outside.
'Nice weather,' he thought, 'I kinda wanna go outside right now.'
It didn't take long for Laura to come back. When she came, it was clear she wanted to talk about something.
Imagine going to sleep like normal, but you wake up in a world completely different world than your own.
Well, that's what happened to Miles.
He used to be a normal guy in a normal world, but ended up in a different world where he needed to get to a magical portal so he could get back home. Little did he know, that would end up falling in love with someone, he could possibly never be with.
