OUTBREAK

Missing #17

Missing #17

May 13, 2023

“Isn't she…,” said Bobby. The group turned their heads in different directions, searching for her. “Nah. I’m not doing this anymore.” Bobby continued to the fence.

Dylan ran up to him and took him firmly by the wrist. “Dammit! Listen to me! You can't just do this!”

While Bobby and Dylan argued, Claire, with Rosy in her arms, walked up to Hugo.

“Should we all leave too?” Claire asked.

“I don't know. Marga is my aunt. I don't want to leave her, but I don't want to risk anyone else’s life,” Hugo looked down at Rosy, then back at the Bugs Bunny behind the fence, who was now accompanied by Daffy Duck.

A shiver went down Hugo’s spine. He tried not to shake for Claire and Rosy’s sake.

“Guys,” said Hugo, stepping to Dylan and Bobby. They were still arguing. “GUYS!”

“What?!” they said simultaneously, turning to Hugo. They immediately spotted Bugs and Daffy.

“Nah, see cause that’s why I want to leave cause them more start coming,” said Bobby as he shook his head. “Hugo, come on.”

“I can't, Bobby. I need my aunt,” said Hugo.

Bobby hesitated but turned to the fence. The others watched as he stepped right up to it. He paused and sighed. With one swift punch, the fence shook all around the park. He turned around and came back.

“Ok let's find your aunt,” said Bobby.

Dylan shook his head in approval, and the group walked across the pavement to the fence, where Bugs and Daffy waited for them.

Bobby threw his hands onto the fence and shook it. “Give us our people or no one get’s hurt!”

Bugs and Daffy shook their heads without speaking a word.

“Okay fine,” Bobby said, he began to climb. The others watched him reach the top of the five-foot fence, but at the top Bobby saw something above the building ahead, so he started to climb down.

“Bobby,” said Hugo. “What happened?”

“We’ll find a way around,” Bobby answered. He stepped off the fence and lifted his head. “Dylan help me look-”

Dylan was gone. From the corner of Hugo’s eye, he saw Claire step a little closer to him and Bobby.

Bobby glanced back at Hugo and took a deep breath. He swiftly turned around to Bugs and Daffy, but they were gone. Instead, a building on the other side of the fence had an open door, leading into a pitch-black room.

“Stay close, we can go around,” said Bobby. He led Hugo and Claire along the fence, eventually finding a connected building with a locked door.

Bobby shook the handle to no avail. “Dammit,” he said.

Claire tapped Hugo on the shoulder, pointing across the park to a broken-down roller coaster, where the character Tweety stood in the rubble. His suit was ripped and stained. The eyes were like the sights of a rifle staring straight at them.

“That one’s not behind the fence,” said Claire.

“I know,” Hugo answered.

They heard a CLICK RUFFLE behind them and turned around to see the locked door open and Bobby gone.

In surprise they stepped away from the door. Rosy began to get uncomfortable in Claire’s arms.

“She’s getting hungry,” said Claire.

A can of diced peaches rolled from the open door into the light. Hugo stopped it with his foot and picked it up.

“I can't open this,” he said.

A shiny metal object dropped just behind the door. The two squinted to see it was a can-opener within the darkness.

Claire stepped close.

“No.” said Hugo, his arm out in front of her. She looked at him, and they traded faces knowing what would happen if they went inside.

“Take her,” said Claire, lifting Rosy up to Hugo.

“What? No. I- I don't-” Hugo couldn't find the words.

“It’s okay. Please.” Hugo noticed the quiver in her lip and took Rosy. Claire turned to the can-opener and walked close to it. With a burst of energy, she passed through the door and slid the can-opener back to Hugo. Hugo watched it slide to him but when he looked up the door was closed.

He picked it up, along with the can and found a bench to feed Rosy.

“You look so much like her,” he said, letting a drop of peach juice drip into Rosy’s mouth. “Lila would love you.”
