Mr. Loveboy

Chapter 4 (Part 2)

Chapter 4 (Part 2)

May 13, 2023

Now that Tristan had an idea for his character, he felt more confident that he could come up with a design that will satisfy him. He looked up astral aesthetics and themed characters online for inspiration. Anything that could inspire him ideas, big or small.

Tristan saved all references he could use, then listed the bits and pieces of details that he liked. Hairstyle, coat, shoes, etc.

Despite his lack of drawing skills, Tristan did his best to add and remove designs that either fit or didn't fit Mr. Loveboy, his limited designing skills put into the test. And after hours of sketching and erasing, Tristan dropped his pencil, a wide smile on his face.

He finally finished the design of Mr. Loveboy.

Tristan took his time to mesmerize his own drawing. He felt so satisfied being able to draw something good, imagining the character on his monitor, moving around and talking.

I have never felt so accomplished in my life!

He continued to mesmerize his own drawing. Until after a while, Tristan let out a satisfied sigh as he cracked his fingers in excitement.

Time to commission artists!

Tristan opened his school supply drawer and grabbed a sticky note. Then listed things he needed to commission: Character Sprite, Background Art, Overlay, Logo, and Background Music.

Then he placed the sticky note below his computer.

I should look for a character sprite first.

Tristan went on Twitter and looked up artists that offered PNGtuber sprites work. To his surprise, however, there were so many creative artists on Twitter. It overwhelmed him about which artist to commission.

Suddenly, a thought crossed his mind.

Oh! I should list artists I like!

He grabbed his notebook and wrote every artist with art style that he really liked, including their prices as well. Although there were so many he noted down as he really liked their style.

After half an hour, he began to narrow down the list until he only had four names left.

Aw man, I can't choose...

Tristan took some time to choose due to his indecisive mind. But he eventually dwindled down to one artist that specialize in drawing "Beautiful men". Their price is the second most expensive of the list, but he thought that it was worth paying for.

They had the perfect art style that matched my vision of Mister Loveboy the most! I can't wait to see how they draw him!

Tristan messaged the artist, then asked for a half-body commission. To his luck, the artist responded five minutes later.

"Hello! Thank you for commissioning me! I might be able to deliver your commission within a week or two as my work list is currently empty!

Please send a character reference sheet if you have any, and deposit at least half of the $80 commission price as down-payment on my PayPal account! Thank you!!"

Tristan read the reply over and over again, feeling some weird sense of nervousness.

Wow... I'm actually doing this.

Once his nervousness waned, he complied with the artist's request and immediately send a picture of his Mr. Loveboy doodle, then paid half of the commission price.

The simple act of paying an artist to draw his vision felt exciting to Tristan, expression beaming at how he welcome another fresh territory in his life.

I can't wait to see my commission! Time to look for a background artist!

Since Tristan already had a theme and design for Mr. Loveboy, he was able to come up with bits of design ideas for the background. But his ideas felt a little lacking, so he looked up astral themed background designs as well as therapy rooms.

After an hour of noting down plausible ideas, he leaned on his chair and let out a satisfied sigh. He looked at his note again. That’s when he realized his list was longer than he thought.

Whoops.

Like what Tristan did with the character sprite artist, he looked up, listed, and narrowed down background artists he liked until he selected one. Then, he messaged the background artist. After a small talk, the artist accepted the commission.

Tristan sent the list of his ideas and told the artist to use as many ideas they see fit as long as the white circular table idea was there. Then he deposited half of the commission with a thank you note, expressing his excitement to see the finished product.

Next is Overlay. They are layouts used to portray an individual's style or theme on their stream and channel. There were many types of overlays, but Tristan listed the core ones he needed: Main Screen, Break, Loading, Ending, and Schedule.

He began to look up for an overlay artist. Immediately, the first artist that appeared on the search results immediately caught his eye, so he checked their portfolio page.

And it turned out to be an excellent decision, as their portfolio did not disappoint him. The artist had plenty of both work examples and work from other clients to showcase.

So without hesitation, Tristan commissioned them for an astral themed overlays. After the artist agreed and some back and forth, Tristan deposited half of the payment.

Last one is Logo, an image meant to represent an entity. In this case, an individual like Mr. Loveboy.

Like what happened with searching for a character sprite artist, there were so many talented Logo artists on Twitter that it overwhelmed Tristan. His list of potential Logo artist got rather long, so it took him another half an hour just to narrow it down to one artist.

Tristan messaged them for a commission. Half an hour later, they accepted the commission and asked for his character sprite, description of the character, and any ideas about what he wanted to see on the logo.

He sent his doodle of Mr. Loveboy, alongside a detailed description of Mr. Loveboy's personality, and told the artist they were free to design the logo however they see fit.

The artist thanked Tristan for commissioning them and asked for a deposit before they start working on it. Tristan felt confident with their skills, so he paid in full instead, which the artist really appreciated.

Afterwards, Tristan began to look for a Background Music, specifically royalty free astral themed music.

He thought it would be a quick task, considering it was just background music. However, it took him a while to find the perfect music instead, as most of them didn't match his vision for the fictional clinic.

After the thirty-sixth music he checked, a soft, calming sparkle-like bell that was reminiscent of the bell chimes in the cafe played on his headphone.

Tristan took a moment to carefully process the music he had just listened to. It was close to what he imagined, so played it a few more times, slowly convincing himself that he finally found the perfect music.

This is perfect!

Tristan downloaded the music right away.

He leaned back in his chair and tilted his head up to stare at the ceiling, letting out a satisfied huff with what he accomplished today.

Maybe this whole vtubing thing might take a while, but I can't wait!

While Tristan waited for his commissions to arrive, he used the time to develop Mr. Loveboy's characteristics and personality, both at work and at home.

His first idea was to base Mr. Loveboy's personality from Fidel, but similar to his barista character, he quickly scrapped it.

I can't see Mister Loveboy as hyperactive. It makes more sense if he's the opposite instead. How do psychologists even act?

Tristan looked up videos of mock psychology sessions to answer his own question. There were only a few that were helpful, so he made them worth it by observing and studying their speech patterns, and the way they communicate to their patients thoroughly.

It helped him to pick up some mannerisms for Mr. Loveboy.

Empathetic, gentle, patient.

He even tried to mimic the psychologists to practice his "Mr. Loveboy" voice, so he can sound more approachable and kinder. He felt silly while doing it, but at the same time, he felt amazed doing something very foreign again.

Once Tristan felt satisfied with his research, he moved to the next thing he needed to learn: the technical side of streaming.

Tristan downloaded a PNGTube software that would allow him to import the character sprites of Mr. Loveboy. To his luck, the software also contained four example sprites to use, so he played with the software with his current microphone, having a blast seeing the sprite "react" whenever he talked.

Next, Tristan learned how to use OBS, a streaming software. He tested every function and button the software, from how to do screen transitions and slideshows using placeholder images, import the PNGTube software on OBS, and so on.

Once he felt like he learned almost everything he needed to learn, he put it on the test by doing a private test stream on YouTube. Seeing the screen transitions and the default sprite "move" every time he spoke on the live stream made him awestruck.

This is so cool!

Tristan felt like an impressionable child for doing something that he'd seen other streamers do, a weird sense of self satisfaction and joy.

He continued to play and toy with the softwares until he got tired and called it a day. He turned off his computer, then went to the kitchen to eat dinner, sporting a big smile on his face.

A week later. Tristan had just arrived back home, "Finally, I can lay down in bed..." He sighed, mixed with fatigue.

He got up to his room, placed his bag on the hooks behind his door, then plopped down to bed, not caring to change clothes first.

Tristan grabbed his phone that was in his pocket, opened the screen, and his body stiffen when his eyes saw a twitter message notification from the overlay artist.

His mind froze at the notification, unsure of how to react. Until a sudden wave of excitement replaced it.

He quickly tapped the notification as he let out a gargle of excited noise, almost shaking in excitement. After a quick but tense wait for the Twitter app to load the message, the low resolution images of the overlays were the first thing he saw.

Wow...

All the layouts were astral themed, with white and magenta as the primary colors while yellow sparkling lights and stars accents scattered around in a way that blends with the colors well. Some art assets also have magenta hearts, which Tristan thought were rather cute.

Despite the images being low quality, it was enough for his mind to go haywire at finally seeing something he commissioned for the first time arrived.

They did an excellent job catching Mister Loveboy’s theme! So cool!

He took his time to continue mesmerizing at the overlays, an ear reaching smile on his face. And once he finished, he paid for the rest of the commission, excited to see the high quality versions of the layouts.

I can’t wait to see the high quality versions of the layouts! And the rest of my commissions!
