Lia quickly rummaged through her pockets. She had read a lot about the island and its mysterious inhabitants before coming here, and she was confident that she could communicate with them peacefully. "Alexandre, don’t shoot again! These are native people, look closely. You were scared because she caught you off guard, but I know how to handle this!
The natives stared at the helicopter with a mix of fear and curiosity. They had never seen anything like it before. Some of them hid behind the bone trees, while others approached cautiously. "How can I be so sure? You’ve never seen one of them, and they’re surrounding us… I’ll shoot if they attack us!" Alexandre raised his voice as he waved his weapon to ward them off.
Suddenly, among the curious natives, a much larger figure emerged, although still human in 'proportions'. He wore clothes completely different from the others, made of animal skins and bones. He spoke in an incomprehensible language.
With caution, Clara approached Lia and gently placed her hands on her shoulders. "Hey, Lia, focus. Here's what you're looking for." She handed a device to Lia and closed her hand gently. "This is the universal translator. You left it in the helicopter. Just speak to them, and they'll understand."
After turning on the device, the unsettling noises, which previously sounded like grunts and creaks, transformed into understandable words. "I am Torkan, a Lord of Flesh. I rule over this island and its people. I can make the animals obey me and the plants grow for me. What are you doing on my island? Why are you pointing weapons at us?" He questioned, pointing his finger directly at Lia’s face.
"It's a true honor to be here, on your lands. We come from a place beyond this island, called... well, Brazil!" She stuttered briefly but quickly regained her composure. "My colleague shot out of fear. We never had the chance to see people like you before; we didn't expect to find humans on this island." She concluded with an embarrassed and apprehensive smile.
A surprisingly wide smile brightened his face as he responded with exaggerated gestures: "Ah, yes! That's great! You want to meet our people. We never had the opportunity to meet anyone outside our people. We've never seen a woman with hair the color of sand." He gently took a strand of her hair and showed it to the others. "We can show you how we live, but I ask that you leave soon as your giant bird's presence is frightening my people."
Lia looked at the others for a sign of confirmation, and they all agreed, except Alexandre, but at least he lowered his weapon. "Alright, Mr. Torkan, show us your land, your culture. That's what we want to know most!"
Torkan rolled his eyes and turned to his curious people standing behind him. "I won't show anything, but my children will. I have more important things to do, mouths to feed, and a people to take care of." He left, laughing, tapping his staff on the porous ground, while two figures took his place in front of Lia.
“Before she could introduce herself, two figures stepped forward. They looked like younger versions of Torkan, but with different expressions on their faces. "I am Thalgar, the eldest son. I am my father’s right-hand and being prepared to succeed him. So, you can ask me anything; there’s nothing he knows that I don’t know!" The first one said proudly, puffing his chest. "And I am Vakar, the fisherman… I take care of fishing on the island!" The second one said quietly, looking at the horizon. "Fisherman? You’re more like a bird, always thinking of flying away from here, never content with our home!" Thalgar gave him a light punch.”
Clara paid attention to what Thalgar said and gave a small smile as she slowly approached Vakar. "Hey, Vakar! Would you mind showing me your fishing activity? Leave Lia with him; she's the curious one who wants to learn all about it, okay?"
So, the two headed towards the edges of the island. Alexandre was extremely uncomfortable as everyone dispersed and abandoned formation. If the natives attacked them, they would be easily defeated. But his thoughts were interrupted by a tug on his pants' hem; the woman was poking him.
"What do you want from me? Do you want me to shoot you? Give me some space, alright?" He tried to push her away with the weapon.
Then she made expressive hand gestures, trying to communicate with him.
"Why don't you speak like the others? I can understand, I'm within range of the 'little stone' that translates... Are you mute?" He asked, scratching his head.
She simply nodded her head, agreeing.
Meanwhile, with the cold water touching her feet, Clara touched Vakar's arm, surprising him. "So, why does your brother say you're a bird?"
"I thought you wanted to know about fishing, isn't that it?" He replied tensely, keeping his distance.
She chuckled. "Fish are not interesting. There are fish and more fish for miles around here. But deep down, there's a wonderful place, you know? A place called Brazil, full of things to discover." She walked behind him as she spoke.
"Why are you telling me all this? Don't think that just because you've arrived here, I haven't noticed that you're eyeing what is ours! What do you want?" He moved away from her, creating distance, while drying his wet feet with strands of hair from a nearby bush.
She looked into his eyes and replied with determination in her heart. "I want... You, or rather, your help, your willingness to break free."
Then our gaze shifted beyond the miles, as Clara had said, landing in Brazil, in a presidential office, where a figure looking very worn sat, with a cell phone on the table that read, "Payment successfully made." He smiled. "Very well, my part is already in order... Now it's your turn, don't disappoint me." As soon as he put the cell phone in his pocket, he signaled for his assistant to enter.
"Your medications, sir!" Said a humble man, carrying a tray with eight different pills and a glass of water.
