I shoved the locket in my pocket. I was actually about to cry. I was so scared I just wanted to get home to my mom. I was pretty close to home when I heard footsteps creep up behind me. I tried to ignore it telling myself it was all in my head. I felt something caress my arm. That’s when flight or fight kicked in. Thank god I don’t pass out when I’m scared. I ran. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me. I swear I heard something chasing me. As soon as I was out of the woods, whatever was chasing me stopped. I looked back and saw absolutely nothing. For the time being I just told myself it was just my mind playing tricks on me. I walked up to the front door, and took a big deep breath before opening the door and walking in. I half expected to see my mom still in the kitchen, but thankfully she wasn’t. I creeped up to the stairs slowly so that if someone were to come down stairs I would see them first and have time to hide. I stood next to the stairs, and looked over my shoulder to look at them. Thank god no one was in the stairwell. The only thing that I needed to be careful about now was making too much noise. Stepping onto the first step was hell. It was so loud I thought that even the dead could hear it. Honestly I don’t know what would work better so I stood there thinking. I decided that the stairs were like a ticking time bomb and I needed to get this done as fast as possible. So without further thought I ran up the stairs. It wasn’t quiet. When I got to the top of the stairs I let out a breath I didn’t even know I was holding. I heard my mom shout my name. I whipped my head around almost like an owl just to see my mother standing there giving me the death stare. I could tell she was pissed. She demanded to know where I was. I told her that I went on a walk through the woods. She was absolutely pissed but just gave up and told me to go to bed. I did what she said and went up to my room. I still haven’t set up my bed. I went to take off my jacket when I felt the locket. I took it out of my jacket pocket as quickly as possible. I was just staring at it sitting in the palm of my hand. No wonder it felt so familiar. It looked exactly like the one I had lost when I was 8. Me and my parents lived in New York and they decided that since it was my birthday we would go get me something special. They took me to the jewelry shop. I was amazed by all the beautiful jewelry. When I saw it, it was the most gorgeous locket I’ve ever seen. My parents said it would look amazing with my outfit. They grabbed it out of my little hands and told the guy working there to engrave my name on the back. I watched the store guy engrave the locket. It was such an experience. When the guy handed the locket back to me I remember holding it in my little hands, it didn’t matter if I was walking or being carried I was always looking at it. While we were walking around my parents decided to get something to eat. So I got excited and put it in my pocket. We went to eat at a nice restaurant and after eating I got a free dessert. I was so happy that I forgot about the locket. I didn’t remember it again until I got home that night. My parents wanted to see it and when I went to grab it out of my pocket it was gone. There was no hole in my pocket or anything, it just disappeared. I never thought I would find it again, especially now as a 15 year old. It was still as breathtaking as when I first saw it in that stupid little shop. I flipped it over in my hand and ran my thumb over the engraved metal. I decided that I needed a place to hide this. I feel like my mom would make us move and I need to find out what secrets that forest holds. I laid down on my sleeping bag and made plans for tomorrow.
I woke up to my sister knocking on my door. I panicked because I hadn't hidden the locket yet. So I just shoved it in my bra before opening the door. I asked her what the hell she wanted. She told me that mom had made us breakfast and that she told her to come get me. So I told her to let mom know that I'd be done after I changed. She rolled her eyes before walking away from my room. I dragged the boxes of mine into my room and changed into a pair of leggings with a white shirt, my converse jacket and my bag. I put the locket into my jacket pocket before I went downstairs. I walked into the kitchen to see my mom and sister eating waffles. My father was already at work so he wasn’t here with us today which was actually kinda sad but it’s alright. I quickly ate my food before it got cold then I hugged my mom before I went on my way. I’m glad we didn’t live too far away from town but it was still a bit far. But I needed to think about what to buy anyway. I made a mental list for myself. I need a notebook with a lock on it and I need a little box that also has a lock of some sort on it kinda like a safe but cheaper. When I got to town I was surprised to find that it wasn’t super busy. Although it was already noon when I got here. It is a weekday so I guess everyone would be at work or something. I walked around looking for a place that sold what I needed. I walked around for about a half hour when I found the perfect place. I walked in and immediately saw all that I needed. I grabbed two notebooks that you would need keys to open and a safe type thing that would need a code of 4 numbers. The safe thing wasn’t super big like I could hold it in both my hands but I could probably hide quite a lot in it. I went up to the front desk to pay. I tried not to look suspicious but I’m not a good actor. The girl working there asked me what I needed this for and I told her that I just wanted a place to keep my journals safe. She told me that she definitely needed something like that too, and we were both able to laugh it off. She bagged up my items while I paid and I went on my way. The walk back home was a long 2 hours of hell. While I walked it felt like I was being watched from every angle. I walked as fast as I possibly could. I hoped that whatever was watching me wasn’t here to kill me. I walked even faster because I was starting to get really freaked out. I was 15 and all on my own walking home. I swear I was almost about to run when I finally saw my house in view. I was so relieved to see that ugly ass house it was almost like I was going crazy. I still felt like I was being watched but that whatever was watching me kept its distance. When I was finally to the yard of my home the feeling that I was being watched just disappeared. I shook off the weird feeling and walked inside.
