Chapter 8 - Olympians and omegaverse

Chapter 8 - Olympians and omegaverse

May 24, 2023

Yoojin had been lost in thought when he collided with someone. He stumbled back and nearly fell to the ground. Strong arms caught him, and he found himself pressed against a muscular chest. When he looked up into the piercing dark hazel eyes of the dark-haired, handsome guy, he felt a spark of attraction. The stranger's gaze was intense, and Yoojin quickly extricated himself from the embrace, his cheeks burning with embarrassment.

"I'm sorry." Yoojin stammered, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Watch where you're going." the guy snapped, his voice dripping with disdain as he glared down at Yoojin.

Yoojin was taken aback by the stranger's hostility. He had always been a shy person, and the stranger's aggressive demeanor made him feel uncomfortable. He mumbled another apology and tried to hurry away, but the stranger grabbed his arm.

He stumbled back, feeling a pang of fear. His social anxiety was beginning to take over, so he tried to pull away and to his surprise, the stranger let go of him.

"I'm really sorry, I wasn't watching where I was going." Yoojin muttered, trying to move past him.

But the guy didn't move, instead blocking Yoojin's path with his body.

"You should be." he said, his eyes narrowing. "People like you are always causing trouble."

Yoojin was frustrated. He didn't like being accused of something he wasn't, and he didn't understand why this guy was being so hostile towards him.

"I've never met you before, so I don't see how you could know what type of person I am." Yoojin said, trying to keep his voice steady.

The guy sneered at him, his eyes filled with contempt before getting closer, intimidating Yoojin with his height. "People like you are sickening. Just stay away from me, got it?" he said.

Yoojin felt a pang of hurt at the stranger's words. He knew that he could come across as aloof or distant at times, especially when he was lost in his thoughts. But he didn't understand why this guy was being so cruel to him.

"Who would want to be near someone as unpleasant as you?" Yoojin muttered quietly.

The guy sneered at him, not showing if he had heard what Yoojin said, and finally moved out of his way. Yoojin walked away, feeling his hands trembling and his eyes stinging. He didn't understand why he was being targeted like this by someone he had never seen before. He couldn't shake the feeling that he had just encountered someone who was going to make his life at this new school very difficult.

Not wanting to run into anyone else, he quickly made his way back to his dorm room. As he walked, he couldn't help but wonder what he had done to deserve such treatment.

As he entered the room, Yoojin slumped onto his bed, his face red and his eyes puffy. Calisto, who was sitting on the couch near Blue that was sleeping next to him, looked up from his game and noticed his friend's face. "What happened?" he asked, concerned.

Yoojin hesitated for a moment, not wanting to burden his friend with his troubles. But as he looked into Calisto's kind eyes, he felt a wave of emotion wash over him and he began to cry. Through his tears, he told Calisto about the encounter he had with the stranger earlier that evening. Calisto listened patiently, offering words of comfort and support. As Yoojin spoke, he felt a weight lift from his shoulders and he felt better after confiding in Calisto.

"You know, that guy sounds like a real jerk. You shouldn't let him get to you." Calisto said, smiling.

Yoojin nodded, grateful for Calisto's support. "I know, but it's hard. I feel like I'm always going to be an outcast and I wonder if I'll be alright in this school. What if I run into that guy again? Will he treat me badly, maybe even worse?" Yoojin said, his voice filled with worry. "What if he's rich? Even if the deputy said that the Academy has a zero bullying policy, he could get off lightly."

Calisto shook his head. "That's not true. You're a great person, Yoojin. You just need to find people who appreciate you for who you are." he said, giving Yoojin a reassuring hug. "I'm here for you, and I won't let anyone bully you."

Yoojin nodded, grateful for his friend's support. Together, they sat in silence, the weight of the evening's events heavy on their hearts.

As they got ready for bed, Calisto set his alarm for the next day. "Don't worry, I won't let anyone bully you. I think you should also tell Jaein what happened. The more people who know about this incident, the better protected you'll be." Calisto said before saying goodnight.

Yoojin slid into a dreamless sleep, feeling safe and comforted knowing that he could count on Calisto to have his back.

The next day, Yoojin knocked on the door to the deputy's quarters. He had been thinking about the events of the previous night, especially the encounter with the rude guy. He had told Jaein about it during breakfast, and she had suggested that he speak to the deputy.

Professor Nakajima opened the door, greeting Yoojin warmly. "Good morning, Mr. Delaney. How was your first night here? I hope you slept well."

"Good morning, professor. Yes, I slept well, thanks to your amulet. But there was something that happened yesterday that I wanted to talk to you about." Yoojin said, his voice hesitant.

The deputy invited Yoojin inside and guided him to a table where they sat. The design of the deputy's quarters was similar to the rest of the dormitory.

He listened patiently as Yoojin explained what had happened. "They were right to tell you to speak with me. The person you bumped into is probably an Alpha and someone high-ranking." the deputy said. "Some omegas want to social climb, so they try to cause scandals or force an Alpha to court them by leaving their scent on their target. You should stay away from him, but if he still treats you badly again without a reason, come find me. Anyway, Omegas are faster than Alphas or Betas, but they are physically weaker, so it's important that they don't go alone outside, especially in places that are a little deserted. During the entrance ceremony, you will be assigned a protector who will accompany you and ensure your safety. Normally, it's a Beta student, but sometimes an Alpha student becomes the protector." The deputy reassured him. "You received an emergency Omega choker, but when you go for your physical examination, you will receive one custom-made. I will also give you some books to read about omega etiquette and behavior. It's important that you understand the dynamics of our society to avoid any misunderstandings or conflicts."

The first and most important book was titled 'Omega 101: Understanding the Dynamics and Your Role Within It'. Yoojin had already read fiction books with omegaverse themes, and he discovered that half of his knowledge about it wasn't entirely inaccurate. However, there was some new information that he had never heard before. For example, Alphas and Omegas could sometimes have an additional subgender, which could be dominant or recessive. 15% of the omega population were dominants, and they were the most fertile, having a heat or rut every month. On the other hand, 5% were recessives and needed a specific mate, called a soulmate, to have children. The mate could only be another recessive Alpha or Omega, and they had a heat or rut every six months. Their pheromones were ineffective with others.

"Is there any way to know if I have one of these subgenders?" Yoojin asked the deputy.

Professor Nakajima got up and went to his desk, where he took the device that Yoojin had seen before, the one that looked like a smartphone, and a crystal. "You can touch the crystal until a light turns on. Since you are an Omega, the light should turn green. If you are a normal Omega, the light shouldn't change. But if you are dominant, the light should brighten, and if you are recessive, it should fade." the deputy explained.

Yoojin approached the crystal with a trembling hand, feeling apprehensive. He was already dealing with so many problems, and he couldn't bear the thought of being dominant or even recessive. If he was dominant, he would have to take a lot of time off for his heat, and if he was recessive, he might end up alone and childless, which made him feel sad.

He had always known that he could never love women, so he was more or less resigned to never having a child related by blood to him. But when he discovered that he was an Omega, he had hoped to have a child with his mate. However, if he was recessive, would he even find this destined mate? The thought made him feel even more anxious.

Yoojin finally touched the crystal, and it turned emerald green. When the light didn't brighten or fade, his shoulders began to relax, and his leg stopped shaking. He was about to take his hand out when the color began to fade until it was a dull color.

"Congratulations, you are recessive." the deputy said, unaware of Yoojin's distress. Yoojin felt numb, and the deputy's voice felt distant until he felt a hand on his shoulder.

"I understand that it's difficult, but you shouldn't worry about not finding your soulmate. The majority of people find their soulmate at the annual convention, where all the presented and unmated recessive Alphas and Omegas are required to go. There are also criteria that can narrow down who you will meet. If you prefer Alpha males, you will only meet them." the deputy reassured him.

Yoojin was still nervous, but he felt a little better knowing that there was hope.

Professor Nakajima changed the subject and continued the lesson by describing how their planet, Aetheria, was an exact replica of Earth, with each of the 12 continents governed by an Emperor. Each continent had countries ruled by a King, with a Grand Duke as their right-hand and provinces or counties governed by a Marquess. Cities were governed by an Earl, and villages were governed by a Baron.

The professor also explained that the nobility rank was inherited by blood or marriage and that nobles could not rise in rank, only through marriage. He further explained that the more powerful a family was, the higher their rank, and that the head of the family was the most powerful. Yoojin found this fascinating, as it was so different from what he was used to on Earth.

As the deputy was beginning to explain the history of the Olympians, the device began to buzz lightly, and the screen turned on. The deputy got up and answered the device, murmuring something unintelligible to Yoojin before turning around.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Delaney, but I have to cut our lesson short. There's an emergency meeting that I have to attend." the deputy said, looking at the device with a serious expression. Yoojin felt a twinge of worry at the deputy's words, wondering what could be so urgent.

Before leaving, the deputy held up the device and explained. "This is a Spellphone and it has many uses, as you've already seen. It's a magical device that allows us to communicate and cast spells. If you want, you can ask one of your friends to take you to the store to buy one. Your smartphone won't work here, so you'll need it."

Yoojin nodded, feeling a little disappointed that the lesson had been cut short. He thanked the deputy and left his quarters, finding his friends waiting for him in the common room.

"How did it go? We thought you would stay longer." Jaein asked, getting up from the couch.

"We talked about how Aetheria is ruled and about Alphas, Betas, and Omegas. I discovered that I was a recessive Omega." Yoojin said softly, visibly disappointed. He was drawn into an embrace by Calisto, who knew that he needed comfort.

"You don't need to worry. As a fellow recessive Omega, I understand that this news may be overwhelming. It's okay to feel scared or uncertain about the future, but let's not let those feelings consume us. It's possible that your mate is out there waiting for you to find them, but don't let that be the only focus of your life. You are just as deserving of love and happiness as anyone else. You are not alone in this. We can support each other and share our burdens. Let's focus on the positive aspects of being a recessive Omega. You have a unique ability to form a deep, meaningful bond with your specific mate that others might not experience. That's something special. We can still live our lives to the fullest and find joy in the present moment. As Olympians, we have the advantage of living up to 350 years, which is why we present so late." Calisto said, hugging Yoojin tighter.

Jaein nodded in agreement. "Calisto is right. We're here for you, Yoojin. We'll help you through this and make sure you don't feel alone."

Yoojin stiffened, surprised. "What do you mean by 350 years?!" he almost shouted out.

"Surprise?" Jaein said, chuckling nervously.

"I think I need to quickly read the books that I received if I want to avoid this kind of surprise." Yoojin said.

"Maybe it's just the right moment to tell you that both Calisto and I are nobles?" Jaein said.

Yoojin looked at his friends for a long moment, not knowing what to say. He was surprised by the revelation.

Seeing that Yoojin wasn't responding, Calisto continued. "As you already know, Lucas and I lost our parents, so I took on our mother's title, and I'm the Marchioness de Navarra. My brother took on our father's title, and he is the Marquess d'Aquitaine. Jaein is a princess of Korea, and her brother, Jaeseong, is the Crown Prince of Korea."

"Wait, but you're a guy. How could you be a Marchioness?" Yoojin asked, confused.

Calisto began to laugh. "That's the only thing you're focused on? Never change." he said, still chuckling. "The use of the pronoun depends on the gender, but to know someone's title, you should always look at their subgender. If you're an Alpha or a male Beta, you use the title lord, and if you're an Omega or a female Beta, you use the title lady, regardless of your gender."

Seeing that Yoojin had a lot to process, they decided to take a break from everything and stroll around the campus, exploring the various buildings and landmarks. As they walked, they chatted and laughed, enjoying each other's company.

They arrived at the dining hall, which looked like a food court that could be found in shopping malls. They did a quick tour and then decided to separate to order food. Yoojin and Jaein went for Asian food, while Calisto wanted Italian.

After lunch, Calisto and Yoojin returned to their dorm room to unpack their belongings, while Jaein went to meet Ryūnosuke.

As Yoojin was unpacking, he found a strange note in his bag. The note read, 'You can't escape me. I will find you.' Yoojin's heart raced, and he felt himself blanch as he read the words. He thought that maybe it was the person who had been watching him back at home.

Yoojin was terrified, and he couldn't move. But then he felt a hand on his shoulder, and the note was taken from his hands. He felt like he had lost all control of his body, and when he blinked, he found himself lying on his bed, staring into impassive dark brown eyes.
