Why: One day while reading the newspaper, I turned to the “funnies” or comic strip section. After giggling, I realized there really wasn’t a strip that represented me, a Hispanic female. While I know my mother loves me as her mother did her, these women were raised to believe that females had to be “perfect” to attract males. Their lot in life was to be someone’s trophy. But Chica crashes all of that! She’s bold, smart and sees the positive side of life. Chica is a light which we need while we’re navigating these dark times.
Hispanic 12-year-old, Chica lives with her overprotective mother in Texas. The visit her Abuela or get visited by her often. Abuela believes women should behave the way they did in the 1950's.
Brownie, the neighbor's dog often sneaks into Chica's room which frustrates her mother.
