Ch 3: "Master of Invention, and The Napping Healer"

Ch 3: "Master of Invention, and The Napping Healer"

May 26, 2023

“Is the communication device working? Euth, can you hear me?” The person on the other side of the device asked, there were a few static here and there yet overall the words were clear. “This is still the… prototype, don’t expect much! I… I’m trying to perfect the connection right now!” The voice says, as Euth puts his ear up against the small device.

It has been a few days since his conversation with the king, deciding that he would keep himself busy by drowning himself in work and research. He has found out a few things by then, mainly about the Demiurge of Creation’s titles and how he could get such a reputation, with one incident particularly of interest to him.

He was a being that descended from elsewhere, coming into the picture much later than all the Numens that have stepped foot into this world yet he took them down one by one. There was no evidence of his origin or why he appeared, yet the Demiurge was a cold and calculating man, his name alone had struck fear into all those who were unfortunate enough to hear it.

Yet it strikes him as odd, if The Demiurge of creation was indeed accurate to the texts, how would The King of The Void, his Master, become friends with such a person? Unless his Master could tame such a personality? Euth shuddered thinking about such a thing.

“Master?” He calls out to the device. It was small enough to fit in the palm of his hands, yet the voice coming out of the device was loud and clear. “Master, is this one of your new inventions?” He asked, curious about the tiny device.

“Yes! I had it delivered to you, since I’m currently testing its connections.” He explained, a few static noises here and there had cut his words, though not enough to cause any major problems. “I’m using the void’s energy to power this thing, isn’t it impressive?”

“Yes, master.” Euth chuckles, putting the device near his ear. “You’re the world’s greatest inventor after all.” Euth smiles to himself, hearing the way his master chokes on nothing.

“Stop flattering me, Euth!”

“But am I wrong?”

Euth could hear his master choking once more.

Euth looks over at the device again, the straps wraps around the palm of his hand to the back to secure it. His Master had sent over his new idea, wanting Euth’s opinion on such things before revising it into a final product. Though due to his fallen status, his Master isn’t able to show his inventions to the world, only to him. Euth thought to himself that had the world not turned their gaze away from him, things wouldn’t have been the way it is now—if his Master was lucky, maybe the world would be kinder to such a man.

It was a rare chance for him to talk to his master, only being able to visit twice in the past year. Yet every time Euth would visit, his master’s smile would always be there to greet him. And now, being able to talk to his master, even with all the distance, had proven his master’s ingenuity.

“Actually, master…” Euth hesitated, only getting a hum as a response. “I wanted to ask about your connections with The Demiurge of Creation…”

“The Demiurge?”

“Yes.” Euth responded, explaining about the rumours that he had heard and what General Eben had said. The healer left out a few details, not wanting his master to get suspicious of his activities. “I was wondering if it’s true that… You’re on good terms with the Demiurge.”

“Oh!” There was a knowing surprise in his master’s tone, chuckling at Euth’s words. “The Demiurge… yeah! We’re more than just ‘good terms’ or ‘friends’, I’ve known him for a while, so I think I’m allowed to say such a thing.” His master laughs again, the joyous sound brings a light to Euth’s day.

“Is that all?”

“Yes.” His master nods his head, even when Euth is not in front of him. “Though it’s uncommon for you to take an interest in others, did something happen?”

“Hmm, I was just wondering. I want to know more about you, that’s all…” Euth reminisce about his master’s odd behaviours, how he speaks or how he would explain things to Euth when he was a child. “Now that I think about it… Master, you’ve never told me your name.”

“Ah? I’ve never?”

“I’ve always called you master all this time…” Euth sighs, but the man on the other side of the phone could only chuckle at those words.

“You’ve asked no one in Eryon?” His master asks, a curious yet amused tone in his voice.

“It never crossed my mind.”

“Why?”

“I want to hear it from you.” Euth confesses.

A burst of laughter came from the other side, his master seemed to find joy in his confession and confusion. What an odd person, he had thought multiple times — but his eccentricity has kept the healer alive for all these years, from the day that they met in the snow plains of the Northern Kingdom to the present.

The King of The Void, Euth recalled, is a name that everyone seems to scorn at, no matter their status. He was displeased when he first heard of such rumours, as his master was quite the opposite of such. The gentle soul that took care of Euth, one who would apologise profusely even if it was Euth’s fault, and the one that protected him. The healer wished to prove them wrong, yet his master would laugh off everything, saying that it doesn’t matter or how people won’t change.

If given the choice, Euth will give up everything, including his life, if his master so desires.

“Rue.”

“Huh?”

“You ask for my name! You should’ve listened when I told you!” His master chuckles at Euth’s dumbfounded expression, even if he’s not there physically. “You’re a real fool, Euth. You could’ve asked my brother and he would’ve told you everything he knows about me and yet you still want to hear it from me?”

Euth could only chuckle at the mild scolding, letting Rue talk and lead the conversation. They continue to chat; the topics range in variety from miscellaneous to philosophical. The conversation goes on, seeming endless while the sun continues to rise to its highest peak. His master would bring up the new inventions that he created and Euth gave his opinions, this continued until a knock came at Euth’s door.

The healer turned his back and saw the prince, leaning against the doorframe, a curious expression on his face. Without words, Euth had understood that the prince wished to talk to him, saying his farewells to his master, ending the connection and unwrapping the device from his hand.

“Did I disturb something?” Sirius asks, walking towards Euth, noticing the device on his hand and the box filled with various objects.

“Nothing major… I was just talking with my master about a few things.”

“Hmm, I see.” Sirius picked up one invention from the wooden box, looking at the object with awe. “Did your master create all of this?”

Euth nods, looking over at the device on Sirius’s hand.

“Your master is a brilliant inventor… It’s such a shame that he’s not an educator here.” Sirius grumbled, putting the device down. “I’ve never known who your master is, and my fathers refused to tell me…”

Euth sighs with a smile, putting the device back in the box. Although Euth had never planned to keep any secrets from the prince, the matter of his master is one that he solemnly swears to never reveal. Due to Sirius’s curious personality, and everyone’s reluctance with such an information, it would be a nationwide scandal if the prince ever did invite his master to be an educator.

“Maybe it’s for the better if you don’t know who my master is.” Euth chuckles, putting the box into one of the many drawers of his table, as he turns his full attention to the prince. “Is there a reason you came to my office, Sirius?”

“Well, Thyleth’s ruler will be visiting.” Sirius informs, pausing for a moment to look at Euth’s reaction. “Remember the project that I told you about? We’ll discuss it soon, Titania and the General Warrior from Thyleth will be there.”

“Do I really have to…” Euth complained, putting his head onto his desk. “I guess you’ll do all the diplomatic talk for me, then?”

“You…” Sirius scoffs, crossing his arms in faux disappointment. “You’re considered a scholar of this kingdom, yet you still lack diplomacy? To think one of my council members would slack off in academics is unheard of.”

“I’m not good with my words, your highness.” Euth counters, lifting his head slightly to look at Sirius. “I had to take seven years of special classes just to communicate properly…”

Sirius couldn’t find any appropriate response to such a statement, only sighing in defeat as he changed the topic.

“Anyhow, meet me in my office around noon. We’ll discuss the project further.” Sirius informs, grabbing a book from Euth’s desk. “Right, and I’ll need to borrow this, you promised that you’ll lend this to me a few days ago.”

Euth rolls his eyes, as he lays his head back down on his desk again, listening as the prince closes the office doors. He turns his gaze back to that wooden box filled with invention, wondering what could be improved, though he often struggles with finding the problems in his master’s creation. The most ideal situation is that he could return the box to his master within the following week, while giving him a list of suggestions on improvements.

The healer sighs for the millionth time that day as another letter is delivered to him, the thin paper sliding underneath his office doors. Though at the current moment, his body is quite lethargic after speaking with the prince about his upcoming project. Maybe he should have insisted on refusing the prince, Euth thought to himself, closing his eyes as he fell into a light midday slumber.

Euth, a Battle Healer (is that even real?) for the Kingdom of Eryon is forced to pair up with Kaslien, the General Warrior from the nation of Thyleth.

The mission was simple: Solve Thyleth's excessive corruption and save the day.

Of course, it's easier said than done as both of them have clashing personalities, often picking fights with one another. But when push comes to shove, they'll have to compromise and find a way to tolerate each other for the mission to be a complete success.

Through furies of gods, and the turbulent torment of trials, will they still stay as one?
