Kryptonite yawned and stretched. Her wings ached like crazy, and after a while of laying there drowsily, she heard a knock at her door and her eyes opened. She looked down off her little sleeping ledge and yawned once more. “Who is it?” She said rolling over. Her door opened, and she heard talons scraping on the cold, stone, floor.
“Kryptonite, get down here this instant!” Her mother's voice scolded. Kryptonite sat up and rubbed her eyes, groggily.
“You have to go to the Academy today!”
Kryptonite climbed off of her ledge and stumbled across the floor. She went into her bathroom and picked through her jewelry until she settled on a small necklace with three soft pink crystals.
She turned and left her room, moving into the dining room. She hastily scarfed up some food before rushing out the door to the academy.
She hurried down the hall, feeling the eyes of many other dragons upon her. Kryptonite was going so fast, she didn't see her brother, Swordtail, in front of her. SLAM! Kryptonite barreled into him, and she fell to the floor with a thud.
“Hey, watch it!” He roared.
“Sheesh, sorry.” Kryptonite retorted and began picking up her books that were all over the floor. When Kryptonite looked up, he was gone. She grunted and began to walk towards the kitchen holding the books close to her chest.
“Good morning!”
Kryptonite looked around and locked eyes with her sister, Sunbeam.
“Oh hi…” Kryptonite said and stopped, watching Sunbeam edge towards her through the crowd of dragons.
“By the stars, you would not believe what happened this morning!” Sunbeam said. “You see, earlier I…”
Kryptonite began to walk a little quicker, caring less and less about what her sister was saying. “So then I said, it's actually my turn, fruit eater! Just like that Kryptonite, just like that.”
“Yeah, yeah…” Kryptonite said and walked quickly away from her, towards her other sibling, Storm. “Hello!” She hooted at him.
“Oh good morning!” He replied, looking up from his books and taking off his spectacles. “Today's the big test eh?”
“Yeah, I can’t wait!” She said, setting her books on the table, and opening one labeled: The Great War
“Almost time for the Academy,” Storm said, collecting all of his books and putting them in his pack.
“Yeah I know,” She said and began to collect her books. She stopped when she saw a book she didn’t recognize. It was titled The Myth of Fangyro Dragons by Thunder Arcanis What’s this? She thought. I’ll have to look at it later.
…
Kryptonite walked into the main takeoff area of the math building. She spread her wings and launched into the air. She caught the rising wind and drifted high into the sky. She tilted her wings and glided down towards the science wing.
As she landed in the main archway, she saw her friend Rainbow dancing around and audaciously flirting with the handsome male dragons. Really Rainbow? Really? Kryptonite thought. She sneaked up behind Rainbow while she was distracted by a handsome ice dragon named Arctic.
“Boo!” Kryptonite yelled right in Rainbow’s ear.
“Eep!” Rainbow squealed. She whirled around with a startled expression. “Kryptonite! Don’t do that!” She said, “Sorry, I have to go now.” She said in an aside to the Arctic.
“Um, ok?” He said, very confused.
“What are you doing?!” Kryptonite said to Rainbow as they walked towards their science class.
“I was talking with Arctic,” Rainbow said. “But you interrupted. You wouldn’t get it. You’re lesbian.”
“I get it,” Kryptonite muttered.
“Oh, that’s not what I meant!” Rainbow said.
“Yes it is and you know it,” Kryptonite said.
“I’m sorry, honest,” Rainbow said. “I didn’t mean to upset you!”
“It’s okay,” Kryptonite said, then sniffed. “She’s really gone, isn’t she? She won’t come back.”
Rainbow nodded silently.
“I miss her,” Kryptonite said. “A lot.”
“I know,” Rainbow said.
Kryptonite sniffed again and then started to cry.
“Come here,” Rainbow said. She wrapped her wings around Kryptonite, shielding her from others’ view. The bell rang and the pair walked into their science class.
Kryptonite sat down at her desk and got out her stylus. She opened up her notes from the day before and looked up at the teacher.
“Everyone put your notes away!” The teacher barked. “You won't be needing them today.”
Kryptonite and Rainbow exchanged looks.
“We are going on a field trip to Fangyro!”
