Ale was a staple for most people around the world at the time. Its provided vital nutrients that were hard to get from cheap food to commoners, it was a safe substitute for the potentially dangerous water and the effects on the brain (namely the pain relief and disinfecting properties of the alcohol) made it a popular prescription of doctors. Yet, even back then ale was seen as harmful to children under the age of 10, instead Cider, from apples and other similar fruits were given to children. Additionally after the “discovery” of the new world Spirits became incredibly popular with distilleries making up 40-60% (estimates vary) of the businesses in London. It got so bad in fact, that London banned distilleries (gin and spirits act of 1751) until 2009.
