Alpha's Faire

Chapter 15

Chapter 15

Jun 07, 2023

Jexanna released a sigh as she watched Hamma storm off with the other fae healers. Figures. Hamma was a prideful faire. Why should she have to request Captain Yong to be the leader when it was clear that Dr. Lewis was more than capable of the task? Typical Hamma, taking credit for others' work.

"Dr. Lewis?" A new voice broke Jexanna's thoughts. Her eyes went immediately to the source across the room. There stood the two remaining doctors, both human. Jexanna immediately recognized the small woman who smiled at her.

"Dr. Wells, I'm afraid that I've made quite an entrance again." She cracked a grin, traveling closer to the two doctors. Dr. Yvette Wells looked over at Jexanna with a toothy grin.

"Dear, if you didn't, I would think you were an imposter." Yvette laughed before offering a hand out to Jexanna. Her brown eyes glimmered mischievously at Jexanna. "I was almost worried that it was going to be your cousin walking through the door."

Ah, Jexanna had forgotten that little bit. The last time she had seen Dr. Yvette Wells was during medical school. A time in which she was self-experimenting the orchid's effects on controlling powers and taking short doses of the nullifying potion. In short, she was a hot mess the last time Jexanna crossed paths with Yvette. To an outsider, it would make sense. After all, she was only 18 at the time with festering guilt laying under the surface. So, to make sense of who was going to and from the dorm, Jexanna led a double life and told everyone that her fae lookalike was a very distant cousin.

"Nope. She and I are no longer speaking." Jexanna laughed it off. "Last I heard was that she was a bounty hunter in Bathlor."

"That's a shame." Yvette frowned. "Well, if you hear from her, let her know I said hello. It has been so long since I've seen her."

"If she takes my calls, of course." Jexanna narrowed her eyes at Yvette, gathering a sense of double meaning behind the woman's words. Yvette was dangerous, among the top in their class, and more than skilled in situational awareness to pick up hidden gestures and similarities.

"Of course," Yvette smirked before glancing at their male companion that stood unaware of the tension between the two. "This is Dr. Hugh Thompson." Jexanna's eyes glanced at the lanky man. She knew of the man. His gray hair spiked up, and glasses consumed half his face, hiding his brown eyes. So this was the man her father considered a rival.

"Dr. Lewis, it's a pleasure to meet you." Dr. Hugh Thompson smiled gently at her as he offered his hand out. Jexanna gently clasped it to find that it, like her father's, was cool. Her father always had a low body temperature. She couldn't help but wonder if his declared rival was similar in that aspect. After all, weren't most rivals very similar?

"Likewise, Dr. Thompson." She replied sweetly. "I'll admit my father is probably rolling over in his grave. After all, you're the only one I've ever heard him call a 'soulless automaton that rose beyond the grave to torment him.'" Dr. Thompson released a laugh as Yvette's mouth gaped.

"That sounds like your father. Even in anger, he often struggled with insults." Dr. Thompson released her hand to push up his glasses. "But I'll admit that one is somewhat decent coming from the man who never blasphemed."

"Yeah, very much. I look forward to working with you." Jexanna nodded in respect towards the man. "But you'll have to pardon me. I have Hamma's mess to clean up."

"Can't that uppity bitch ever take care of her own messes?" Yvette frowned. Jexanna's eyes narrowed at her, threatening her discreetly. Yvette was very much aware of the drama that transpired while Hamma was her father's student. She was privy to the secret that Hamma tried to hide.

"Yvette," Jexanna hissed in a tense tone. The last thing she needed was for Yvette to bring up the past. At least not, yet. That was one of the only cards that kept Hamma off from barring Jexanna from practicing in the medical community. Not that it mattered since Dr. Lewis wasn't seen practicing anywhere in years.

"You're right." Yvette threw her hands up with an exasperated sigh before shifting to Dr. Thompson. "Dr. Thompson, why don't we go find some coffee? I'll buy." With that, the man was whisked away by the petite woman. Jexanna couldn't help but release a chuckle. Typical Yvette.

'I need an escort.' Jexanna looked down at her lab coat as she projected her thought to the only one she knew was listening. If it was hard to get around the FLA as a bounty hunter, it would be even more difficult as Dr. Jess Lewis. She was essentially a requested guest at this point. Even the areas that were once permitted to Jexanna were now closed off. The only places that Jex could now access were the bathrooms, conference rooms, and the lobby.

"So, I take it that you made an appropriate impression?" Shou opened the door with a smirk. Jexanna's brows furred down as she stalked across the room.

"Please." She scoffed. 'Hamma almost blew the whole operation up.' She hissed as the two began to walk down the hall. Her eyes darted around quickly. There were a few members from the task force hanging around the conference room. Jexanna seamlessly transformed. Her eyes looked up at Shou as she wrapped herself around his arm, making sure to show that it pressed against her tightly against her chest.

"I'll trust you, Shou-Shou, to be a proper escort this time." She patted his arm as her voice rose slightly in pitch. "No more leaving me abruptly." Jexanna's lip curled down into a pout.

"If you control yourself, I promise to not." Shou released a sigh as a small tinge of red flashed on his ears. Jexanna had to stifle a laugh. While neither were unfamiliar with playing this role, it was with other members of the Knights. Preferably ones that they held late-night sessions with.

"I promise." She smiled sweetly at Shou that simply rolled his eyes, uninterested. "Now, let's go and meet Captain Yong."

"Alpha Stone paid me a visit after your meeting." Jexanna's eyes shot open as she nearly tripped on her own feet. Shou's tone was low and quiet as they stepped onto the staircase. Captain Yong was on the third floor, meaning they had to endure a decent journey on this damn staircase. Why couldn't the FLA use elevators instead of this strange marvel? Jexanna's lips grew tight as she played it off, not wanting to release a growl. There were eyes and ears everywhere.

"Really?" She drew her hair back behind her ear as a playful grin grew onto her lips. "Are you jealous, Shou?"

"We've established a long time ago that jealousy's not a part of our relationship." Shou shook his head with a small grin.

'Just be careful of him.' He advised inside her mind.

'I can handle him.' She shot back.

"Please, Shou, you and I have known each other for quite a while. I don't think you need to worry about an Alpha getting in between us." She giggled softly as her eyes glanced around the chamber. As she anticipated, her presence was still making an impression. Her father, after all, was Dr. Jonathan Lewis. Curious eyes lingered on the two as their staircase ascended to the fourth level. Each pair was expecting her to perform as his mess of a daughter. She could hear the voices whisper; she could feel their eyes on her. Every passing moment, another rumor growing in the wind of how she dishonored her father. Jexanna tightened her grip around Shou's arm. He looked down, brow furrowed downwards curiously. She gazed up with a small giggle.

′And this is why I wanted Dr. Jess Lewis to die in an accident.′

Shou groaned in response. To everyone else, it looked like he was getting tired of her pressing against him.

'And she would have if you had just joined the Knights years ago, my dear.' He rolled his eyes as Jexanna resisted the urge to snort at his response.

Please.

"Alpha Stone wouldn't be able to handle you." Shou shrugged with a shake of his head. "I'm not worried."

"Good." She patted his chest.

She couldn't ask for his heart. After all, his mate couldn't possibly be her, right? The fae didn't have mates.

But then he said that word. He stared at her, with lilac locks flying in the moonlight, and said it so quietly that she had to be mistaken.

Then he said it again.

"Mate."
