Zhang Xiaoqiang planned to take out the zombie at the stairwell first. It was too close to the vegetable garden. He wanted to grab as many cabbages as possible within a minute before the approaching zombie from the opposite side got near. He wore high military boots, his father's woolen military coat, and thick leather gloves on his hands. Taking advantage of the zombie not yet showing up, he quickly ran to the stairwell. One zombie was coming up, smelling his scent, its teeth bared, and it lunged at him. This was his first close encounter with a zombie. The zombie had a dull gray face, eyes turned white, and a mouth wide enough to fit a fist. Its teeth were all black, like miniature triangular scrapers. It sent chills down one's spine. A strong stench of decay hit him, making him feel nauseous and almost vomit. The zombie had already pounced on his shield-like pot lid, causing him to stagger backward. The feeling of a fight came back to him. He sidestepped with the shield, raised his right foot, and kicked the zombie in the chest. The zombie rolled down the stairs. Without much thought, he ran to the vegetable garden, dropped his weapons, and grabbed the cabbages one by one, along with the soil, and stuffed them into a snakeskin bag. He glanced at the approaching zombie on the opposite side, step by step. Faster, faster! He panted heavily as he stuffed the cabbages into the bag, his hands fiercely digging into the black soil, feeling the cabbage stalks and forcefully pulling them out. Even when mud and juice from the leaves splashed into his eyes, he didn't feel it. He just wanted to pick more. This was food, this was hope! The zombie was getting closer; he couldn't be greedy anymore. It was time to go. He grabbed the bag with one hand, took his weapons with the other, and ran desperately toward home. When he saw the entrance to the corridor, he quickened his pace, stepping into the corridor and running towards his front door.
Suddenly, the iron door across from his house opened, and his neighbor-turned-zombie rushed towards him with a strong odor of decay. Its sharp claws were less than 10 centimeters away from his eyes. A chill ran up his spine, starting from his tailbone and passing through his forehead. He wanted to scream, but no sound came out. In his mind, he could only think of two words: "It's over." His legs gave out, and he sat down on the ground. The shield in his hand flew away, and the zombie missed its target. His mind went blank. His feet kicked the zombie's shins, causing it to lose balance and fall towards him. He rolled aside, and with the hammer in his hand, he relentlessly smashed it onto the zombie's body, one hit after another. When he came back to his senses, the upper half of the zombie's body was already smashed into a pulp. Dark, sticky blood splattered everywhere, and the intense stench of decay made his head feel like it was about to explode.
The zombies on the opposite platform were about ten meters away from him. Three strong ones were in the front, followed by three mutated old ladies moving slowly. They were all excited by his scent and were determined to get their prey within arm's reach. He jumped up from the ground, not even bothering to retrieve his shield, and rushed into the house with the bag in his hand.
After locking the security door, he leaned against the iron door and took a deep breath. The blood from the zombie splattered on him,
making it unbearable for him. He hurriedly went into the bathroom to change his clothes.
Zhang Xiaoqiang emptied the bag of cabbages onto the floor tiles, neatly arranging them. There were a total of 11 cabbages, weighing over 20 kilograms.
Outside, the zombies scratched at the iron door, and for the first time, Zhang Xiaoqiang felt confident about surviving.
