Hildr stepped into the hall and recoiled a little at the wall that seemed to be oozing out either black ichor or blood, it was hard to tell from the doorway, since she was blocking it.
“Is that normal?” She asked, with a skeptical brow.
“Yeah, it’s pretty common.” I mentioned, gently pushing past her. It was definitely blood, the air tasted like copper, ichor tasted like decay. “I think ectoplasm would fit the color palette of the wallpapers more, though.”
“Wouldn’t that clash though?” Hildr asked, studying the red and gold wallpaper on the other side of the hallway. The blood was leaking from the golden circular designs, to almost look as if they were eyes crying the stuff.
“Yeah, it’d stand out more!” I answered, turning to her. “You can barely tell there’s blood unless you’re looking.”
She gave me a skeptical look, one fist on her hip. “You sure you aren’t just color blind or something? I saw it right off the bat.”
I grunted, not wanting to answer her, though glared at the colors of the wall a little harder. “Let’s start searching.”
“Yeah, no time like the present!” Hildr declared, opening the closest door, and walking through.
Which opened a door from way down the hallway, which she walked out of. “Well now hold up...” Hildr grunted.
She turned around and went back through the door, only to open the door next to me, not the one she had originally gone through. “Uuuuh....Isaac?”
“Not normal.” I muttered, looking over her shoulder into the door. Instead of the spectral essence of some undead, or the realm of unlife itself, which would have been a normal thing to see in this situation, all I saw was...the night sky? “I have no idea what this is.”
“Maybe you should give it a try?” Hildr offered, moving out of the doorway.
“I may as well.” I muttered, entering the door, and exiting to the door right next to it. “I don’t see a pattern or anything so far, do you?”
“What?!” She called out from down the hall. “Hold on!” She jogged over, while I wondered why she had walked down there in the first place, and how long it took me to transport from one door to the next. “I thought I’d use the door again to see if it would take us different places.” She explained, jabbing a thumb behind her. “Got our answer, seems random.”
“Do we...keep trying?” I asked. Ghoultrude had to be here somewhere, also it was...
“Sure, this is kinda fun.” She read my mind, as usual. We both grinned at each other, and darted to different doors. We darted from one door to the next, Hildr cackling the entire time, and I with a wide grin.
At one point, as I swung open a door to dive in, I heard her bellow; “Incoming!” As she slammed into me with a giggle, sending us flying into the portal.
We both landed with a loud OMPH onto a different carpet than the hallway, momentarily lost in our giggling. After composing ourselves, however, I looked around a bit, smile fading slightly.
Everything looked different.
“Angel, scootch.” I muttered, tapping her hip. She shifted off of me, and stood slowly, looking around as I turned on my stomach and did the same.
We were now in some sort of penthouse looking suite, or at least the lobby of it.
And I had no idea how.
