"Come in." A calm voice was heard from the other side of the door.
He walked in with the documents in his hands. An older woman sat on the front from the door at the far back where there was a large glass-pane window that let rays of light into the office. She was behind a desk with a few papers and very tidy otherwise. There was a flower vase on the window pane behind her and a cat figurine on the front of her desk beside a name tag. The woman raised her shard eyes giving off an oppressing feeling to Azrael. She looked at who entered her office bus soon a warm smile appeared on her face.
"If it isn't Azrael. I saw you were the best in your year. It is such a nice feat." Her voice was completely different from what it was before.
"I am honored, Madam. The president sent me to deliver some documents. Where should I place them." asked Azrael.
"As serious as ever. You should join my class. I am sure they would love some competition. Don't you think so?" She stood up from her chair. A very comfortable looking one. She walked over to Azrael and took the papers on her own. She pointed to her guest seat beckoning Azrael to sit. She wore the same warm smile on her face.
"I am very happy with my classes Madam. I think I should get going. I have to help with the activity patrolling soon. Could I be excused?" asked Azrael.
"Of course. You should visit this old lady more often. I hardly see you recently." She looked a bit sad when she said that.
"I will try madam," Azrael replied, trying as much not to get off cold.
{Treat her a bit better. She sees you like a grandson. Smile at least.}
'Then won't faking a smile be rude?'
{I guess it is true.}
"Yes. Dear. Hurry now." Azrael left and went on with his duties as planned. She was left organizing the pile of documents in different filing areas on a shelf at the side of the room. She was still smiling with joy.
In truth, she viewed Azrael as a grandson. She was reminded of her son who went missing a while ago. They held the same silent and serious nature. She loved that he put effort into what he did unlike many. He was not hypocritical and was frankly truthful in most cases. He was not rude either just a bit frank and blunt. He was someone she would love to appoint as the school president the next year. She felt happy whenever he dropped by her office despite it being very seldom.
Azrael joined the patrol group. He walked with them. One was Sanders and the girl was called Frida. They weren't so well acquainted despite being in the same student council. They walked nonchalantly but silently from one activity to the next.
During this time Azrael observed the different activities planned by clubs and groups. Some made a café where others tried their meals and others made a play. Of course, being this was the first day not all activities had ensued. The first day was the kickstart of the major club activities. The rest would join in amid the week. This was to create a balance. Where there were hosts as well as an audience. They kept walking in a trio group from place to place. Frida was talking sometimes but didn't get any response. That didn't break her spirit of talking about her daily life and how much she wished she would be part of the festival.
Thins progressed as planned until the alarm went off. The fire alarm that was installed as a safety measure during an emergency was ringing throughout the entire school audible from the open field. Most were in case of fires but the fire water sprays weren't on. That meant it was another type of emergency. This was the first dedication Azrael had in mind.
The first few minutes were chaos. There were some having fun and raising more to the chaos. Some were scared witless that they didn't know how to respond. Some were having hyperventilation episodes. Though there was the majority were calm and knew the alarm was a safety measure to create awareness of any danger. The students panicked but with the up-taking of the different professors and the student leaders, there was soon calm. The noise was significantly reduced.
A few things were going through in Azrael's mind. He wondered why the alarm had gone off. What other type of emergency could have it been?
There was no time useless wondering. At that time he needed to do his duty as a school representative. That was to maintain order within his zone. The two Frida and Sanders who were with him had already assumed serious postures as they took leadership of the students in the theater club which they were currently at. They have a significantly high number of students than most clubs thus it required just as much effort to calm and take control of them. He kept a lookout for Alexander but to no avail. He hadn't seen a shadow of him since the time they met in the morning.
After a while, everyone gathered at the assembly area. This was at the sports field at the back of the school. The school had two gates. The main gate lets in guests and the back gate lets them go. Like an entrance and exit. The entrance of course was the main gate and the exit was the back gate.
Whispers and talks were exchanged amid the crowded student gathering. Everyone was confused. There were a few that were scared and uneasy while a few looked horrified. Azrael observed these reactions from different students. He didn't know most of this. He didn't need to thus he didn't care much to memorize their names.
Azrael navigated his way through the croup and got to the front where the president, Riley, and the principal were discussing. She seemed to convey a few words to Riley then hurriedly left. Riley looked stunned when he met eyes with Azrael.
Riley made a forced smile the called out to Azrael.
"Azrael. Come over." He sounded more serious than usual. His cheerful nature was nowhere to be seen.
Azrael silently made his way to Riley.
"President?"
"We have an urgent situation. I will need your help to keep track of things here. The students have to be monitored to see if anyone is missing. You will work with the first and second years. I will take care of the older students. Do you think you could manage that?"
"... Yes."
"Splendid. Let me know what you find. Here you can have this. The student record for the two years students."
"Okay. I'm on it."
[New Mission.]
[Something sounds fishy. Investigate and find out what it is.]
[Reward: ???]
"...."
Since meeting the light ball in his conscience that night, Azrael had been getting this type of message. They appeared in a hologram screen form that only he could see. They were written in sure a way that he could read them without having to be obstructed from what was in front of him. The message was there but the information went right to his head.
These messages were very random as well. They had no pattern. It wasn't triggered by anything specific. They just appeared, whenever and wherever. They gave no further information than that. It was quite useless from Azrael's point of view. Getting notifications on the obvious.
However, this was the first time he had seen the reward message. There were no past occurrences. Azrael wondered what type of reward it would be. He had no way to sanely describe the dilemma to anyone else. Thus Azrael kept it to himself. It had no harm.
He slowly walked towards the crowd. Riley made it easier by ordering that each year stands on its designated side. That way there was more efficiency as they were already categorized.
While tickling present students' boxes he met up with Ophelia and Alexander. They stared at each other for a split second before moving on to the next students. They were once again together. He found it weird that they were missing during the day but he simply ignored that for now.
He kept to his duty until he was done and submitted his report.
"As expected some students are missing from the list. The first year is three students. The rest of the year is two or one students while some none. A total of 7 students. This isn't good."
"Why is it? What is going on."
"I will tell you since I can trust you to keep a secret. Some students were identified as dead in three locations. Some are gravely hurt and injured. Some are simply unconscious. This brings the number to a total of 8. This is including one of the professors. This is the first time in Orlaen College it has happened. The principal is in a bind and she is doing all she can to handle and stabilize the situation."
"I see."
"....." Riley internally thought that Azrael couldn't be any more out of place with his reaction. He had thought that by telling Azrael about the incident he would finally see a change in expression or rather a genuine reaction of shock or fear. He was sadly disappointed when there was none.
"What do we tell the students?"
"Nothing. That is not our place. The decision lays with the principal."
"Then I will get going."
"....Sure."
