Wings of Domination

Energy

Energy

Jun 21, 2023

"Let us continue where we left off," Helen announced as she twirled the stylus in her hand.

Instantly, several files were uploaded to her student's digital desks. They gleamed a scholarly blue, floating just within one's peripheral vision. A simple title adorned each file.

Basic Sorcerer Anatomy.

Temperature and Energy Capacity.

Choosing One's Clothes.

Each file contained a few pages worth of diagrams and textual content. Every important term had its own colour, corresponding to a certain theme of information.

"Now, all of you have already discovered that an Energy Sorcerer's body heats up like an engine when used; A sorcerer's eyes will start glowing in the same colour as their energy and even their blood vessels will shine from beneath their skin. As the quality of a sorcerer's energy can be discerned based on colour, it is easy to gauge someone's strength the moment they act. How do you think Energy Sorcerers keep this fact hidden from the demons and other sorcerers?" Helen pulled up a picture of an Energy Sorcerer in the midst of battle. The same picture manifested before every one of her student's eyes.

It was the image of a Barrier Mage, protecting his comrades from the rain of Hellfire that the demons wielded. The mage's energy shone in a fierce, but unassuming white light, gleaming from his eyes, blood vessels, and from the forcefield of his creation. Only a slight trace of purple flashed past his gaze every now and then. The battlefield around him had been torn apart. Buildings had been toppled and corpses lay all around the limited range of his shield.

He was at wit's end, but the world around him was motionless, and so was he. He was but a remnant of history.

Until Helen tapped on the image.

A wave of heat bloomed from the virtual existence on everyone's screens. A guttural growl shook the hearts of every student in the room as they watched the Barrier Mage pour every ounce of his being into his shield. Wave after wave of Hellfire rained upon the man, but the flames of his heart burned even fiercer. His comrades—the Blasting Mages who were shooting down as many demons as they could—were his only hope of survival.

"This man here is one of Aquamarine's Heroes, Mt Hinsha. One of the greatest Barrier Mages to have ever lived, and still lives through his legacies today. His name bears the title that only mountains have, signifying his contribution to our race." Helen paused, allowing the video to continue playing. Sweat beaded down the faces of her many students, her words slowly sinking into their minds.

After a moment, a student posed the question she had been waiting for.

"Why does the greatest Barrier Mage in the world have the same mana quality as a slave? Didn't Mt Hinsha have the King's energy?" Confusion laced the student's expression. The disbelief made apparent by his heavily creased brows was a sight to see. "I can't see even a trace of purple in his barrier!"

"Exactly. Mt Hinsha's energy was indeed the colour purple—the purple of Kings. However, for the sake of his mission at that time, he could not reveal himself as one of humanity's powerhouses. He had to manipulate the appearance of his own energy. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to impart his legacy to his disciples. Based on the files on your digital desks, can anyone deduce exactly how he did it?"

A hand was raised. Regal, calm, and confident.

Another hand followed swiftly after. This one was lazy. Apathetic. Void of care, and simply existing.

Helen looked at the pair of hands, not surprised. She ignored one and nodded at the girl who raised hers with poise.

"Yes, Mage Seraphina?"

"Is it along the lines of energy dilution, perchance?" The black-haired noble asked with an innocent expression, "Since a mage's energy quality is related to both its colour and its potential power, is it the process of polluting one's energy the reason why Mt Hinsha was able to hide his identity?"

"Polluting one's energy is indeed a good term," Helen nodded, but she still paused to speak. "However it is not the most accurate description of what was being performed here."

The video on everyone's desks disappeared, allowing the students to focus on her.

"The name of such a technique is called [Coating]. Which allows one to hide one's energy inside shells of a weaker version. It is actually quite a simple concept, but the execution of such a technique requires fine control. One must constantly and forcefully diminish the natural quality of one's energy as it flows through every inch of one's body. Though researchers say that it is much easier for those with weak energy to do so, there is a lacking database for such an occurrence."

Helen's eyes flashed. A small sneer laced her lips as she gestured towards the boy who had also raised his hand just moments ago.

"Areii Layvann," She then gestured to the podium she stood before. "Perhaps you could demonstrate a little of this technique before the class?

Areii fought back the urge to sigh as he looked at the gloating expressions of his classmates. That's what you get for trying to stand out. They seemed to say.

But he didn't really have a choice... At least, academically.

Although discrimination within Grand Lord University was immense, everyone had a rigid structure that they adhered to. As long as he recited correctly and appropriately, his saddening physical scores could be pulled up.

He had to answer whenever he knew of concepts that others did not know of.

Unfortunately for him, the closest person he could call a friend had great intellectual abilities. Seraphina was a wonderful combat partner given her ability to deftly collect and process information—something that Areii lacked, apparently.

The requirement for intellect is much higher in Aquamarine than on Earth... I guess it makes sense given the difference in technology. He had thought at the time. He was already considered an analytical person on Earth, but here on Aquamarine, he was basically average.

The only reason why his written tests were excellent was because he had much greater experience than his peers.

Perhaps fighting in the Underworld for so many years had dulled my intellect to sharpen my intuition. Areii sighed as he stood up and walked to the front of the class. He closed his eyes, fully prepared to make a fool of himself as per Helen's usual spiteful teachings.

It had stopped when Areii and the nobles had been ignoring each other, but it had resumed when Seraphina became his combat partner.

Areii breathed.

[Coating], huh? He secretly smiled, Martial Artists have a similar concept.

'Aurae Silencia.'

A subtle heatwave washed across the room as Areii roiled his energy to life. With every beat of his heart, his energy would circulate, awfully similar to the movements of a [War Saint]'s Blood Aura. With such a familiar sensation, his commands were all carried out like flowing water. It was almost instinctual for him.

Areii's energy wafted out. His formerly yellow energy slowly but surely lost its lustre, moving one level down and turning white. Before it could continue its descent, however, Areii locked his control into place.

Let's stop at that.

He wanted to keep a few cards hidden. Yet, hush murmurs had already spread throughout the crowd. With a side-long glance, Areii spotted a dazed Helen Montclair. It was clear to him that she had not expected him to carry out the technique already. What should have been a humiliation for him had turned into a moment of glory.

Areii couldn't help but revel in it despite his apathetic demeanour.

“There are souls beneath that water. Fixed in slime
they speak their piece, end it, and start again:

'Sullen were we in the air made sweet by the Sun;
in the glory of his shining our hearts poured
a bitter smoke. Sullen were we begun;
sullen we lie forever in this ditch.'
This litany they gargle in their throats
as if they sand, but lacked the words and pitch.”
― Dante Alighieri, Inferno

Areii Layvann. A youth who was 3 days away from turning 18. A youth, whose life was taken by an unfortunate circumstance, and now bathed in the waters of Cocytus and Lethe. His memory was fragmented and his heart poured out its miseries.

He was one who had lost so much, he would rather assume annihilation. Yet the world still shackled him from beyond the grave. Chains jingled as he dragged his inhuman form through the boundary between two worlds, slaughtering the dead. Annihilating spirits.

Only one memory, so firm and so concrete, constantly lingered on the surface of his consciousness.

"I am Areii Layvann, seeker of resurrection."

He achieved it... at the great price of frozen solitude. Now, his existence seeks further horizons.
