Chapter 4. The Fairy

Chapter 4. The Fairy

Jun 21, 2023

Emma couldn't understand why Sally was accusing her of being the one to blame for Olive turning into an eagle. What could she have done for that to happen?

"What do you mean?" Emma asked, confused. "How is it my fault?"

"Well, maybe if you hadn't been playing with magic that day in the forest, this wouldn't have happened, " Sally replied.

"Playing with magic?" Emma said.

Then, Emma remembered when she transformed that bear into a butterfly unintentionally.

"Emma, you idiot! How can you not know how this is your fault?" Sally shouted, her voice getting louder and angrier.

Emma didn't know how to respond, she just stood there in shock.

The angry yelling woke up a fairy that was sleeping in the house, and she flew and stared angrily at Emma and Sally. "Hey! Some fairies are trying to sleep, you know!"

The fairy had beautiful wings, but her size was similar to that of a girl of about three years old. Her size was much larger than Emma could imagine a fairy to be. She had a high-pitched voice. Also, she had the sweetest and kindest face in the world, yet she was so angry at Emma and Sally. She yelled at them both to be quiet before flying away angrily.

Emma and Sally watched her fly away, and they stayed quiet for a moment. Then, Sally looked at Emma, with a smirk on her face. She said, "I think our friend is pretty mad at us."

"Our friend?" Emma asked.

Sally laughed, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Well, she’s not our enemy, so she must be our friend, " she said, and laughed again.

Emma didn’t see the humor in it. She was still trying to figure out what Sally had meant when she said that it was her fault that Olive turned into an eagle.

Emma felt like she was in a daze, and she wasn’t sure what to say in response to what Sally had said. She was still trying to process it all, and her heart sank when she thought of Olive trapped in her eagle form.

"Okay, we have to make this right, " Emma finally said. "I’ll do anything to help Olive turn back to normal."

Sally seemed to like that idea, but she also had a mischievous sparkle in her eye, and she began to smile.

"Oh?" she asked. "Anything?"

"Anything, " Emma said with a smile, not realizing that Sally had something else in mind.

"I know how we can help Olive turn back to normal, " Sally said, and her tone of voice was full of excitement and delight.

"How?" Emma asked, her eyes wide with interest and eagerness.

"We need to find a witch, " Sally said, and her smile grew even bigger.

"A witch?" Emma asked, her eyes narrowing slightly in confusion.

"Yes, a witch, " she said. Then, Sally rolled her eyes. "I know, I know. You're a witch, but we need a witch who can actually control her powers!"

"I'm not a witch!" Emma replied, annoyed.

"They all start like this..." Sally mumbled to herself, shaking her head. "Of course you’re not a witch, " Sally said with a grin, rolling her eyes at Emma with the same amusement that someone might have when an adult laughs good-naturedly at the things that kids believe are true. "But there is a witch in this village, " she said, "and she can help Olive."

"I don’t believe you, " Emma said in a flat tone. "And even if there is a witch, I don’t think she will help us."

But Sally refused to back down, she knew that she could do it.

"She will!" Sally exclaimed. "We just have to convince her to help us."

Emma still seemed skeptical, but she was beginning to see it from Sally’s perspective. If they could find a witch and convince her to help them, then they could have Olive back to normal very soon.

"What do we need to do to convince her?" Emma asked, and her tone was serious as she tried to think of a way they could convince the witch to help them. "We would have to find something that the witch wants, or something that she needs." Emma said. "But what would a witch want or need?"

Both Emma and Sally thought for a moment, but neither of them could think of anything.

"Do you think witches like shiny things?” Emma asked. "Like diamonds or gold?"

"She's a witch, not a princess, " Sally replied, rolling her eyes.

"Witches can like diamonds and gold, " Emma said. "It’s worth a shot, we should try it," Emma said and she had an excited look on her face, "but where can we find diamonds or gold? It’s not like we can go to a store and buy them!"

The fairy from before approached Emma and Sally. "Did someone mention diamonds and gold?" she asked, eyes sparkling.

"Yes!" Emma and Sally both said at once, looking at the fairy with hope.

"Where can we find diamonds and gold?" Emma asked, looking up at the fairy with wide eyes.

The fairy looked at Emma with a disgusted face. "First of all, " the fairy started, "don't just go around asking a random fairy to give you diamonds and gold. That's rude, and it also shows that you're only interested in those things, and that's not a very nice look. If you want diamonds and gold, you have to earn them."

"Second of all, " the fairy continued, a slight look of annoyance on her face, "it's a good rule of thumb not to trust anyone who tells you that they'll help you, but has their own agenda in mind."

"What?" Emma asked, confused.

"What part of what I said didn’t you understand?" The fairy asked, with a small sneer. "I’m not repeating myself to you, if you can’t keep up then that’s your problem, not mine."

Emma felt like the fairy had been very rude to her. It wasn’t fair that the fairy was treating her like she was stupid.

"Okay, " Emma said, her voice still calm and firm, "is their anything we can do to convince you to help us?"

The fairy smirked. "Well..."

Sally interrupted her. "You know I can kick you out of my house whenever I want, right? You are living here for free without paying me anything."

The fairy looked at Sally with surprise on her face. Then her eyes widened and her wings ruffled slightly as she became angry.

"How dare you speak to me like that! You know what happens to people who anger a fairy, don’t you?" She said, her voice full of disdain and hatred.

She reached behind her back and summoned a wand, pointing it menacingly at Sally.

"I will turn you into a toad, and I’ll make it so that you’ll stay that way forever!" She threatened.

Sally seemed a bit taken aback by the fairy’s threat, but she held firm and didn’t look scared. "Go ahead, " she said defiantly, "you can’t scare me, and I’m not going to be bullied by you."

The fairy stared at Sally for a moment, before she gave a frustrated sigh and lowered her wand. "Fine, " she said, "so be it, just know that you’re being careless and that there might be consequences later on."

The fairy’s face was still a mixture of anger and frustration, but it had an air of respect about it as well. She was clearly a powerful creature, and Emma had the feeling that she should be careful and not get on her bad side.

With this in mind, Emma decided to be diplomatic and try to find out what the fairy needed.

"Okay, " Emma said. "What do you want in exchange for helping Olive turn back to normal?"

"Huh? I can't do that, " the fairy answered.

"Can’t do what?" Emma asked, and you could hear her annoyance at the fairy. She couldn’t believe that she was being difficult like this. Didn’t the fairy understand how important this was?

The fairy rolled her eyes and muttered something under her breath in a language that Emma didn’t understand, and she walked away while flipping her wings slightly in disdain.

"That was… not the best response, " Emma said, watching the fairy fly away. "It seems like the fairy doesn’t want to help Olive."

Sally walked over to Emma and rested her hand on her shoulder. "Sometimes I think you really are an idiot."

Emma was hurt by Sally’s comment, and she took a step back.

"That was mean, " Emma said. "I was just trying to do my best, " Emma continued. “I don’t think it’s right for you to talk to me like that."

Sally seemed to be taken aback by Emma's response. "Sorry, " she apologized, averting her gaze elsewhere in the room.

Suddenly, a thump was heard coming from outside Sally's house.

"Hey!" Sally yelled, running to the door and opening it without a second thought. "What's going on?"

She stepped back slightly in surprise when she opened the door and saw the eyes of the eagle, looking at her.

Sally laughed. "Oh my God, I got scared for a moment! I still can't get used to your new look, " Sally said.

The eagle's eyes were wide and full of sorrow, and it looked like she had been deeply hurt by all of the things that had happened.

Sally and Emma both felt a wave of sympathy and sadness wash over them as they looked at the eagle's eyes.

It was clear that Olive had been through a lot since her transformation into an eagle, and she was now looking for help.
