Analina
I’m so bored. Milo is so boring. Alexei is so boring. I don’t know who Icarus is, but I bet he’s boring too, I thought.
They’d been asleep for hours after I had woken up, and I was pacing around the living room. I’d already napped earlier, so I wasn't tired at all. All I wanted to do was play. I stopped pacing and turned to face the old grandfather clock watching it tick, an entrancing melody in this otherwise dull moment, while an idea started to form - a genius idea.
That’s it. I’m going to wake them up, I thought. Then, we’re going to play fairy princess court and Alexei will be my prince and Milo will be. I had no idea. What should he be? A jester!
They would love this plan. I was super smart. Now no one would be bored.
I ran up the wooden stairs to the second floor and crept over to Milo’s bedroom, my socks sliding over the shimmering floorboards. Milo would be my first victim. I reached the door and looked around for the handle, but there was none. I looked left and right, no handle. It was like Milo was trying to trick me, but he doesn't know he can't trick this fairy princess spy. Maybe if I just pushed it open, I could get inside.
I pushed, but the door didn’t budge. But I would not give up. I was going to play fairy princess court; I just needed more force.
I stepped back and readied myself as I rushed towards the door. I hit it with a slam, but the door stayed shut. This was frustrating. I started to wonder if this was even a door. It didn't seem like it, but I saw Milo exit his room out of that door earlier.
Once more, I stepped back and looked up, readying myself. I banged my knee against the door on the previous run, and my leg was screaming in pain.
It’s just a mere flesh wound, I thought. Every good fairy princess spy has battle scars.
I looked at the door, analyzing my target for weak spots. I looked to the right, and it just looked like a normal door. One glance left told me it was the same for the other side. But then, I looked up.
Of course, there was the door handle, so far up that I couldn’t reach it.
Once again, I needed a plan, one so genius that I could get one of those pieces of paper that Milo worked so hard for.
I looked around and spotted a pile of books so big that they functioned as doorstops. This is perfect. All was coming together. I grabbed the books and pulled them, but they didn’t budge. I tried again, this time putting all of my body weight into it, but they didn’t move an inch. I was too small, so I needed a new solution. I was small, but I was agile. I climbed up to the top of the book pile and started pushing books off, one by one. They clattered as they hit the ground, almost ruining my master plans and waking Milo up. Luckily, Zuri's friend is a deep sleeper.
I then methodically dragged each doorstop under the doorknob. They scratched against the floorboards as they moved, but not enough to wake someone up. The element of surprise was still present. I was almost giggling with glee as I brought the books under the doorknob. My plan was working perfectly. Then, I started lifting the surprisingly light books and placing them in a stack.
I am a genius, I thought, and I am going to get a real piece of paper for these smart ideas. Take that Milo!
I climbed up the pile of doorstops as my face gleamed in triumph. I was amazing and unstoppable, the doorknob just out of my reach. The end was near. Daddy would be so proud of me that he wouldn't be able to hit me anymore.
I grabbed the doorknob and squealed as it twisted. Victory was mine, yet I had to remind myself of the battle yet to come. I still needed to wake Milo up. This battle would be the true testament to my fairy princess spy skills.
I cracked open the door and peeked inside, my mind still up in the clouds. Milo's room was not much more than a wrought-iron bed, an overstuffed chair, and a dresser; except that books covered every corner of his room. Books were piled on top of each other everywhere, from the top of his dresser to under his bed. I was slightly intimidated. Did I need more books to get a fancy piece of paper?
I crept over to his bed and climbed up the bedframe, my already injured knee banging against the metal with every inch I moved higher. Of course, I didn't need more books. My plan was already perfect without them, but only if I succeeded, and every step I took, the more my knee threatened to collapse.
Soldier, you can’t just quit halfway, I thought, gearing myself up for battle as I climbed the cliff of bedsheets. The covert operation must succeed.
I spotted Milo amidst the array of stuffed animals of all shapes and colors, his glasses askew and his hair down. I was locked onto my first victim, the Jester. This was almost too easy. I crawled across the pink bedsheets to his body, crouched low so that I could pounce at any moment.
Once I reached his prone body, I tapped him on the shoulders. No response, but I was just playing nice. This fairy princess spy had experience.
I crawled around to the other side of his body and poked his face. No response. He was a deep sleeper, but I wasn’t giving up yet.
I had to use my ultimate attack. I jabbed my fists into Milo’s stomach and he sat up, gasping for breath. My father had taught me that move, and it worked like a charm every time.
“Ahhhh!” Milo screamed, “There's an intruder! Icarus… shit where’s Icarus? We need to keep the kid safe!”
Perfect. Now both adults better be awake. I got off my knees and stood up on the bed, my hands placed on my hips. I looked quite regal, at least for a fairy princess spy.
“Jester!” I looked down at him. “How did you learn of such profanities? That is not funny. I want funny.”
He looked up at me, barely concealing his anger. Why? Didn’t we get to play now?
“I hate kids,” he muttered as he turned away from me.
What a rude man.
Suddenly, the door slammed open and Alexei barged in, frazzled and haggard-looking, yet ever so princely. His hair was a mess and he was dressed in what looked like a potato bag and matching trousers, but he still had a regal air about him.
“Oh look, the prince has finally arrived,” I play-rolled my eyes. “Jester and I have been waiting forever for you.”
Milo looked at Alexei, searching for an answer to this madness. All Alexei could do is stare back blankly, still wrapping his head around the situation.
“Icarus, did Zuri warn you about this?” he asked, searching for any sign of previous knowledge. “She didn’t tell you anything, did she.”
Jester was ruining my mood. He was supposed to be funny, but now he was getting too serious. This was supposed to be fun.
Well, the mood would of course be lightened if I told them about my glorious victory banquet. I pretended to pull out a scroll from the pocket of my nightgown and unraveled it.
“Dearest Jester and Prince,” I said as I pretended to read from the scroll. “You are cordially invited to Her fairy majesty, Analina Desmes’s victory banquet celebrating her heroicness as a Royal spy in the conquest of the doorstop. Formal dresses are required for every member attending the banquet, so be sure to come prepared.”
Jester’s jaw dropped as Prince started cackling, obviously in awe at my heroism.
“Me? In a dress?” Jester shouted, “Dear god, why me?”
Prince was on the floor now, hardly breathing between bursts of laughter.
“Yes, Milo. You are wearing a dress. Her majesty the fairy princess spy Analina has ordered it,” he choked out. “Are you disrespecting her majesty’s heroism during the great conquest of the doorstop?”
My prince was coming to my rescue! Well, of course, he was. No one could debate my heroism. I was the most heroic fairy princess spy that had ever lived. Even wounded, I still managed to succeed, my grit even more evident than before. I had survived both my father and the door. I was unstoppable.
I hopped off of the bed and onto the floor, excited for my banquet to start. Prince would look absolutely dashing in a dress and Jester, well, Jester would look okay I guess.
But that all would happen soon enough. For now, this fairy princess spy had to wait.
