Chapter 18

Chapter 18

Jun 30, 2023

The news was about some missing guy then it switched to someone asking about the recent killings from someone they now call Ghost Wolf. The video is unclear of the face of the mysterious Ghost Wolf and he wondered who could be so violent.
For a moment he saw a glimmer to the side of his vision and looked but nothing was there and the news was no longer on. He distinctly remember that happening once before but he paid no mind to it. Now he’s wondering if he’s seeing things that are no longer there.
Learning about his bosses past was interesting, it was surprising that his family was a free for all or to learn that his father got around. But Van certainly provided even with nothing, much more than him at his age. He can’t really imagine Ari doing the same at that age, Van was in charge of his little sister at 5 years old. How had he managed?
He tried to think of a serious 5 year old Van and could see him scowling as a kid. Did Van even know what he was doing at that age? What had happened that was so bad for him? He doesn’t seem to like anger directed towards him, even indirectly, Sen had found that out by watching him.
Why was Ari able to get so close to Van while he was still struggling? He glanced over to Ari as she walked up her stairs and hopped over to the stool closest to Van and patted him on the head. ‘Ah, Van reacts to gentle physical touch. He was more calmer when he was laying his head on my lap.’
He remembered Van’s earlier encounters, the fluffy socks, the onesie, he was still so childish. Was he making up for lost time? Was playing with Ari also making up that lost childhood? How fast did Van really grow up?
Sen caved after Van’s persistence and agreed to leaving the place for a week. He called up his sister stating that he’s going to be staying with her for a week. She was obviously concerned but he reassured her that everything was fine. He finished up his cooking and set out the food for the two kids, he now can’t view Van as an adult. It was nice seeing Van acting like a little kid with Ari and the two started whispering to each other.
He was now suspicious. What was his Boss teaching his daughter? Why were they that close?
“Then what about the time when...” Ari said and whispered. Van smirked giving a quick glance at him and back towards Ari.
“That’s funny, what happened next?” Van asked and leaned in to listen to her answer. When Ari said what had happened Van put a hand to his mouth to keep from laughing. “Did he really?”
“What are you two up to?” Sen asked and both Van and Ari looked like they were caught with their hand in the cookie jar. Was it about him? What could he have done that was funny? Was it that time he mistook Ari’s tutu for an apron?
“Well,” Ari started and looked at Van for a moment and smiled, “I’ll tell you but it will cost you.”
“What are you teaching my daughter?” Sen was shocked at what his daughter said but the look to Van told him that it was planned. He asked Van first because this was not like his daughter. Van’s influence was starting to become worrisome.
“A better question is did that really happen?” Van asked a smile on his lips.
“This is about me in that tutu isn’t it? I thought it was an apron and I was exhausted from work!” Van’s face didn’t change, so he heard that? Looking to Ari she also didn’t change her face, what was going on? Was that not the story she just told, was it... no, it can’t be. “Those ears were a one time thing!”
“That’s not it either,” Ari said and looked at Van and smiled. “I’ll tell you but it will cost you between two scoops of strawberry ice cream and a new doll house.”
Van leaned over to Ari and whispered something.
“What ideas are you giving her?” Sen asked now mortified that he was turning his daughter into a thug.
“My revenge is sweet,” Van answered simply and understood what he meant.
“Which one?” Sen asked now worried that he might have to suffer more over the mistakes he had made towards his Boss.
“There was more? Oh, right I still have to get you back for that other time as well.” This was now worrying.
“Fine, two scoops of Strawberry Ice cream each. Now, tell me what you two were talking about?” Sen asked.
“Mr. Snuffles sneezed out a skittle and he ate it.” Van tried to hold back a laugh.
“You haven’t told any stories about me, have you?” Ari thought for a moment then shook her head no.
“And that is how you get information,” Van spoke up now having called down, “And what you want.”
“It’s fun!” Ari said happily and ate her food. He had voluntary given up two of his most embarrassing moments in his life. How will this be hung over him?
The night went on uneventful and soon it was time for bed. Sen picked Ari up and brought her to her room and laid her down and brought up the covers of her blue blanket. He sang a small song for her then kissed her head and went to finish with the dishes. Only for them to be done already and Van had disappeared he figured into his room.
He walked to his own room and gathered his things for a shower, he had move the dresser to the side close to the door and set his clothes in it and his cologne on top with is phone charger, wallet, keys and belt.
The sound of thunder rumbled through the house and suddenly a flash and the power was out. He set his spare clothes down and looked for his phone and another flash lit the room and oddly enough made the wall in front of him glow like a magic door. He quickly got his phone and shown it on the wall beside the dresser and searched where he saw the light. He seen a small thin black line with a small curve inward to the line.
It really was a door.
How many secrets does this house hold? More importantly why were these rooms so hidden? It also didn’t go past him to realize that Van never ventured to his room. He always looked nervous when going near it and always had a worried expression when looking at his door.
What was he afraid of?
He thought his boss was a timid guy but being afraid of his room?
What could have happened to him for him to be so fearful?
A cold shiver ran down his spine when he placed his palm on the ‘Door’, it felt foreboding. Now that he thought about it, he hasn’t used the bathroom in his room either. Just the hallway bathroom. Shaking his head he decided to not dwell on imaginary fears. He walked out of his room to check on his daughter but seen that her door was where he left it and no sign of movement from his boss’s door. Was he the only one up?
Another clap of thunder rang through the house and for a moment he seen someone standing in the living room and was gone when the next lightening hit.
What was going on?
He went back to his room and figured he should stay there for the night. He’ll worry about showering tomorrow.
He woke up and walked out of his room and heard the shower going, what was different was the open door to Van’s room. He looked in and seen the dark room with a soft blue glow and there he saw his daughter laying on the bed. He looked to her room and seen that the door was as it was. He walked over and opened it and seen no sign of Ari.
Sighing he went to the kitchen to cook breakfast and wondered why Ari didn’t run to him when she was scared. Why run to Van?
He shivered realizing it was a cold morning after the rain. Setting out the food he called for his two kids and they came out looking sleepy.
“Sweetheart, you sleep ok?” Sen asked his daughter. She nodded yawning and started to eat quietly.
“Wasn’t scary anymore,” Ari stated, “Dawddy made sure.”
“I see,” Sen said simply and looked to Van for an explanation. He looked tired, like he never slept at all did he not like when other people where near him while he slept?
Van set off for work while he and Ari got ready for the lazy day. It was clear that Ari didn’t want to do much other than lay on the couch and watch cartoons. He was fine with that, he told her where he would be and went to the garage to look things over.
The garage was as messy as Van had described. Box heaven indeed. He searched through the nearest box and found that it was garlands, lots of garlands. Nothing but garlands. This must be the Christmas box, or one of them more like. The smell was dusty and a bit like peppermint. The garlands themselves were red, green, white, blue, gold, silver, some of them twisted together and were wrapped up so nicely.
Setting the box aside he figured that he should have grabbed a pen to mark them. He went back up stairs and seen Ari still watching cartoons and picked up a felt pen from the junk drawer that was actually neatly organized. He went back down and started labelling them as he saw them and set them aside.
He hadn’t noticed that they were disappearing from the spot he had put them until he finished the wall stack by the door. Looking around he wondered what happened to the boxes and seen someone walk in through the door and stared at him.
“Rowan,” she said and stood there waiting.
“Uh, hi,” Sen said then went back to the boxes now knowing what was happening to them. He got through three more stacks before Rowan asked for a break. They walked up the stairs and he gave her a glass of water and went to check on his daughter. She was sleeping soundly so he started on Lunch to send to Van.
After eating Sen went back down to sort out the boxes only to find that most of it was already done. Only a few of them were scattered and he poked through them, what he found was smaller boxes.
He opened one up and seen a delicate glass figurine of a rose, it had thorns, spiked leaves and the petals were each visible and thin. It looked like a crystallized rose with the red and green tint. In the box was a small note that read: ‘To the flower that stood past time, delicate and fragile to the touch. Will this lonely but lowly sun chime, for you and your gorgeous petals such. Rise you up to face time, to your heart I’ll clutch. Your thorns this time, won’t hurt much. If I hold you delicately to my soul silver prime, soak your leaves so you don’t feel crushed. Love always, S. Wolfe.’
It was quite clear that whoever this ‘S. Wolfe’ was they were loving. It seems that they made all the glass figurines that he’s found. And to see them in boxes in a box they made a lot. He wondered what could be their earliest work.
