Tell Me Your Story

Tale of the Great Forest

Tale of the Great Forest

Jul 10, 2023

The Great Forest, the unexplored land in the middle of the Ark continent. Connecting to four major nations, the perimeter of this forest was the main way of commuting between each nation. While there were many rumors about the forest, none of them was proved to be true and anyone who ventured too deep out of curiosity never got back. But the outer area of the forest was proved to be safe to traverse with proper guards, this provided people with a shorter route to travel between each country.

But one day the weird rumor appeared in the four cities near the forest, the rumor about a weird flower. It started as a small report from adventurers who went into the forest, they found a white four petals flower during their mission. When they looked at the flower, they suddenly felt lonely and remembered their loved ones. And since it didn't disrupt anyone's work, no investigation had been performed.

Until the officers in the adventurer's guilds managed the documents and found many similar reports about this flower and brought them to the higher up. Turned out all four guilds around the Great Forest had these reports, so the investigation was performed immediately.

To their surprise, there was only one such flower in the entire forest and more importantly it could move. But because of its ability to mess with people's mind just from watching, they couldn't do much investigation and people who tried attacking it, lost their mind instantly. From the verbal testimonies of the victims, they found their bodies slowly and painfully fell apart into flower petals until they came back to their senses. In conclusion, the white flower posted no harm unless you tried to attack it, so they just issued a warning and left it at that.

The tales of the Lonely Flower in the Great Forest started to spread across the continent. Commoners found the tales interesting but that was it, no one felt like trying to acquire the flower for themselves. But it was a different story for the nobles, many tried and failed miserably. Some even hired scholars to investigate how to safely acquire the flower for them.

Usually the flower was quite aloof and moved inside the forest on its own whim. It had been like that for decades so adventurers just ignored it when they saw it and stayed away. But soon they realized that the flower couldn't be seen anymore, and that made everyone understand the phrase 'You don't know what you got until it's gone'.

People who frequent the forest miss the flower's present and its peaceful atmosphere, some even try to search for the Lonely Flower deeper in the forest but couldn't find anything. Some thought someone managed to capture it and kept it for themselves, some thought the flower went into the middle of the forest and some thought the flower just left this area to explore the world. But most of them did nothing and continued to live their life, only a small group of people came together and seriously searched for the flower. This group was called 'The Cult of White Flower' but their story was the story for another time.

—

"I wonder, was the wolf satisfied with its life in the end? But I know she lived a fun life at least, she even had a phase of battle junkie too with her new power."

While closing the book titled 'The Wolf of White Flower' I thought back to when she came into the room. I still remembered it like it was just a moment ago… Of course, it was! After she left her biography appeared on my desk including all the events happening after she got the reward from us! How was this possible?

Maybe this space wasn’t by concept of time, but that meant not only I couldn’t predict where our visitors came from, I wouldn’t know which part of the history they came from either!

…

Whatever, I could just treat all visitors as singular beings with no tie or connection between them and didn’t have to worry about the time paradox I might cause to this world… What was it called again? Nah, just ignored them all. My job was to produce those books for White, if their contents changed because of other books, it wasn’t my responsibility!

“Enough with self-delusion, Wasn’t I in the middle of something when she came in?”

While trying to remember what it was, another book appeared in front of me. Ah yes, the geography of Moria. Time to have some fun reading.

“Let’s look for the Great Forest and see if this book updates its content or not.”

To my surprise, this was a normal book with the time of writing included. I assumed this book was written far before the Lonely Flower event because the forest described in this book was a lot larger than what I saw from our wolf’s memory. Either this writer was exaggerating or wolf’s sense of distance was crooked, these pieces of informations weren’t reliable at all.

“At least, the location of each nation and major landmark should be correct, right? Do we have the world map? Room?”

It was disappointing to receive the sense of denial from Room. Should I try to draw one myself? …Nope, I can’t even write properly, drawing was like a toddler trying to drive a car.

“Room, could you draw a map? Only the part we saw in wolf’s memory was enough. We would fill the entire world eventually.”

After some silence, a large piece of fabric was hung behind my desk with the detailed drawing of the Great Forest and surrounding area in the center of the map.

“Room, you are the best!”

Since I had nothing to do now, I picked up a wolf’s biography and continued reading where I left off. How could that gentle girl become so ferocious? Was it an animal instinct of the strong?

“And why did she have to go and challenge the king of the forest?! That thing was a dragon, you know? Poor dragon got humiliated by a wolf and couldn’t even fight back.”

When he came to his sense, he already made a contract with that being.

His job was to write the story about anything he met.

What sort of people would he meet? What kind of story would they bring to him?

"So, tell me your story" - He said as his next target walked into the room.

At least, he was nothing but the watcher. No danger would come, right?
