The Ones We Left Behind: Diary of Joha

Day 2

Day 2

Jul 02, 2023

So my pa returned early this morning! He was rather eager to get home because he and his comrades struck it rich at Lish, for they were in desperate need of Mithril steel for an upcoming war with some other kingdom. With who exactly, they didn't ask cause it was none of their concern. Pa was so excited he journeyed home without rest, well he slept on his horse halfway back and he kept his horse fed and watered on the go. How he managed to do it is beyond me.

He took me and mother out to celebrate at the tavern and he bought a round of drinks for everyone. After he told me his adventures, he got to asking if anything interesting happened while he was away and so I told him about Dia and my attempt to defend her. He nearly fell out of his seat laughing. "Aye, them magic folk are full of surprises, lad," he said. I thought he was going to make his usual comment but when I mentioned it, he merely sputtered. "If it were a regular lass, I'd tell ya, but this one I ain't sayin' anything."

So I continued to tell him the rest of the story. My moment of truth came in when I told him about how I was wanting to join the quest her and her comrades were taking part of. He nearly dropped his mug and his eyes were wide open. I thought he was about to faint or something for a moment but instead he let out a hearty laugh before he slapped my back. If I were a full Dwarf, I wouldn't feel the stinging pain from Pa's hands. "About time you were off on an adventure instead of spendin' all dat doodlin' in dat book of yers."

Needless to say, Pa wasn't too keen on me writing in this but Mother insisted I write down my thoughts and everything. He never gave a scolding for the writing and seeing how excited he is now, he's given me more than his blessing. "ANOTHER ROUNDS ON ME! MY LAD IS GOING ON AN ADVENTURE!" he cried out to the whole tavern. The patrons cheered. After finishing his third mug of ale, he got up. "Follow me, my boy," he said, "I got somethin' fer ya when ya go." We left the tavern, he and I, and we went back home. Mother remained in the tavern because she knew something I didn't.

Pa and I went around to the back of the house to a shed he built before I was born. He lit up a lantern and pulled out some long wrap. "Son, I feel dat this is the right time to give to ya," he said before handing the wrapped item to me. I unwrapped it and it was a hammer. Gold, a faint bit of purple, and a single glowing crystal on both sides of the head. The head had a spike up top. "I made it while you were still in yer mother's belly," Pa began, "I named it Harbinger. The crystal came from a falling star dat crashed in a farmer's field near Ovenheim. It wields limitless magic. Oh, and the hammer? It's for both crafting and battle. Can't let ya go without a means to help get ya out of situations." I must've made him real happy because he began to get all teary-eyed on me and gave me a heavy hug. If he had squeezed any tighter, he'd have split my spine in two. My sides and my back are still a bit tender right now.

We went back to the tavern, with Harbinger strapped to my back, and there she stood; Dia. "So, this is the lass you told me about?" Pa asked. I gave only a nod. He laughed even more. "Aye, ya left out one important detail; she's a mighty purty lass." Oh, theh embarrassment I felt. My face was redder than hot coal and I tried to hide my face. Pa always had a habit of embarassing me and what's more? He gets a huge, and I mean HUGE, kick out of it. Dia gave a laugh. "Thank you, good sir," she said with a curtsy. "So you're the lass that's taking my lad on an adventure?" Dia gave me a look before speaking with him. "Well, I had to hold a discussion with the others about this first. I believe your son may have jumped to conclusions..."

Pa slapped my back once more. "That's my boy, alright," he admitted. "Fortunately," Dia spoke, "they decided that your son would make an excellent addition to our party." My heart must've skipped because I was feeling excited about this. This was it for me; I'm going to meet her friends and have an adventure. "We leave in the morning, so you must be ready by then."

I agreed to be ready and she departed. Pa and I went indoors to rejoin Mother and the others. When we went back home after nightfall, I began packing some necessary belongings, of course I knocked over some of my previous journals. Yes, I have more, but most of them I just really draw, hence why my Pa made that "doodlin'" statement. Of course I started to write down my thoughts with this one.

Anyway, Mother fixed a special meal for me; smoked salted pork, ginger cake with Lambas leaf, and two seared fish steaks. I ate heartily before I turned to writing this day out. Gosh... my first adventure. I'm definitely feeling like I'm following Pa's footsteps, only not as a miner. No offense, I love my Pa and I love what he does as a miner. I hope he doesn't find this in my journal and think that I was insulting something he loves. Love you, Pa.

Well, I'm about to hit the sack so I will write again before I go to bed once more. Until then, good night.
