August became more and more easily agitated as the week went on. I didn't understand why and didn't ask either. He seemed adamant to keep to himself. Though, I don't think he realized it showed clearly on his face.
Slowly, the gala approached. October, as was promised, brought in more guests than usual. They varied greatly too.
Laverne entered after a group of girls giggling.
"We heard you have an outdoor area," one of them started to say.
"Yes, it's just past the wisterias."
They giggled again and gave me their orders before heading to the glass room.
"Good morning, Laverne."
"Good morning, Vera."
"Juice?"
"Yes."
August emerged from behind the wisterias blocking his way.
I heard him mumble, "Excessive" as he passed me by to stand at the counter.
"I'll manage the front."
His curt tone was not unnoticed by me and Laverne.
She gave me a look while taking her drink to her usual corner of the cafe.
"Is something wrong?" I braved.
He didn’t bother turning my way as he tried to regain his composure.
"Nothing," he said softly.
As a boss, I felt like I was prying into his personal life, so I took a step back. A long deep breath passed through my lips.
"If you're having troubles with your shifts, we can change it."
He turned his head slightly, "I'm fine."
I pursed my lips when he was no longer looking. The air around him felt heavy and in turn, I felt like I was being pushed away.
I heard him click his tongue.
"Why don't you take tomorrow off," I offered.
He snapped around, his hands formed into tight fists. "I'm alright, Boss. I don't need the day off."
Sighing, I nodded. "Alright."
I had no right to pry anymore than I already had. Customers were more open to me than he ever was. However, I'd known them for years, and I'd known him for only months. He was just a part-timer, anyway.
Much like the girl in the library, our stories only crossed paths briefly. When the time comes, we too will go our own ways.
Dormiveglia means the space that stretches between sleeping and waking.
Vera stopped writing her story, thinking it was over, but Aust's name started to weave itself into the pages of her life until a new story formed. Their story.
